Chapter 91: Chapter 91: He Shines Bright, She Is Ordinary

Shane Warner politely nodded and smiled, saying, "Hello, Grandpa. Hello, Grandma."

The old man looked at Shane with a face that seemed displeased with everyone. Audrey Sutton, with a dry laugh, secretly tugged at Shane’s sleeve and whispered to him, "Grandpa has always been like this. Deep down, he’s really a cute old man."

Shane maintained a polite and decent smile,

watching as Grandpa walked towards the door, hands behind his back, saying, "Not bad, young man, you’re half as handsome as I was back in the day."

Grandma held Shane’s hand, smiled with satisfaction, and said, "So you’re Shane. You must treat our Audrey well."

Shane chuckled and nodded, "Don’t worry, Grandma."

"Oh, our Audrey is married now. You’ve grown up, and we’re getting old."

Audrey, holding Grandma’s hand, comforted her, saying, "Grandma, you’re not old at all. You’re just as beautiful as always!"

"You sweet-talking girl, come on in and have a seat."

Audrey didn’t worry at all that her grandparents wouldn’t like Shane.

Because she knew that in front of elders, he was the kind of "perfect son" that no one could find fault with.

When Grandpa came back from fishing, Shane showed off his cooking skills by making a fish dish, which Grandma praised incessantly, saying Audrey didn’t choose wrong and found a good husband.

Audrey’s smile held a bit of pride, but there was a hint of worry deep down.

Because she didn’t know if she really hadn’t chosen wrong.

She didn’t know if everything before her was an illusion, or how long this good scene would last...

After dinner, Norman Sutton went to the neighbor’s house to spar with Mr. Hart over gaming skills, and Grandpa and Grandma were downstairs in the living room arguing over what to watch on TV; one wanted to watch a war movie, and the other wanted to watch a drama about life and love.

In the end, Grandma decided, and you could hear Grandpa grumbling beside her, "Every day it’s these household trivialities, what’s so good about that."

Grandma said, "And what’s so good about your fighting and killing all the time."

Audrey stood upstairs, looking at the door next to her room.

She imagined that one day she and Shane could be like Grandpa and Grandma, bickering all their lives but never mentioning separation.

But a lifetime is so long, and she didn’t know if her marriage with Shane could last that long.

"Click—"

"Creak—"

He came out of the room after his shower and saw her standing in the hallway, asking, "Why are you standing here?"

Audrey snapped out of her thoughts, smiled, and asked him, "Finished your bath?"

"Yeah, is my phone with you?"

"Oh! Yeah, it’s in my bag, I’ll get it."

When Audrey took out the phone, she saw that the lock screen showed a few new messages on WhatsApp, but the content was hidden, and she couldn’t see the content or who sent them.

"Someone texted you."

Shane took the phone, unlocked it to check the messages, then looked at her standing beside him without moving, and chuckled, asking her, "Curious who it’s from?"

Audrey pouted and said, "Not curious, it’s definitely Faye Xavier or Mor and Luc."

Shane said, "A woman."

Audrey was stunned for a moment and then, with uncertainty, said, "Then it must be Phoebe King."

"Not bad, it seems the last incident indeed taught you a lesson, but it’s not Phoebe King."

Audrey was startled, subconsciously glancing at his phone as he said, "It’s my mom."

"...I knew it, what does Auntie want?"

Shane said, "Still calling her Auntie?"

Audrey pursed her lips and said, "It’s just the two of us now, no need to be so particular. We both know what’s going on."

He stared at her for two seconds, a hint of displeasure in his eyes, then lowered his gaze to his phone and replied coolly, "Okay."

Audrey’s expression stiffened, unsure if she said something wrong.

"I... I’ll head back to my room. If you need anything, just come find me."

"Okay."

After that, he turned and went back to his room, closing the door.

Audrey’s expression became downcast as she looked at the tightly shut door, letting out a barely audible sigh, then walked dejectedly into her room.

She couldn’t understand why he was upset; she didn’t say anything wrong. Could it be that he was taking this marriage seriously?

At that thought, Audrey felt a pang in her chest.

But she quickly dismissed the thought because, based on his current behavior, she hadn’t noticed any indication that he had started to like her.

Their relationship seemed harmonious enough, but he didn’t treat her as his wife, so he couldn’t possibly take this marriage seriously.

She feared that if she took it seriously, only to find out he was just playing around, she’d be heartbroken, so she didn’t dare indulge in wishful thinking, and she wasn’t that confident in front of him.

Compared to Clarissa Morgan, she felt she wasn’t as well-matched with him.

The outside world may speak harshly, but they’re not wrong. If she wasn’t a Sutton, if she didn’t have the Suttons’ background, she might never have had the chance to marry someone as dazzling as him.

Without the Suttons, she’d just be an ordinary girl who could easily be overlooked in a crowd.

She sat in her room, staring at the computer for a long time, but couldn’t write anything.

Getting up, she walked to the balcony, intending to observe what he was doing next door and think of a way to make him feel better, but as soon as she stepped onto the balcony, she locked eyes with him.

He was wearing a black shirt, blending into the night; a hint of crimson at his fingertips, white smoke swirling and drifting with the night breeze.

Audrey paused, then continued forward, pursed her lips, and forced a laugh, asking, "...You’re still up?"

"Can’t sleep," he said, bringing the cigarette at his fingertips to his lips.

"Then... do you want to go somewhere with me?"

"Where to?"

Audrey smiled and beckoned him, saying, "Come on out."

After speaking, she ran back into her room, stepped out into the hallway, and waited for him outside the room.

After a few seconds, his door opened, and he walked out, looking at her silently.

"Follow me," Audrey said, then headed to the end of the hallway, lifting her long nightgown as she climbed the stairs.

Standing in front of a metal door at the top of the stairs, she waited for him to come closer. She placed her hand on the door latch, smiled, and said, "I’ll show you something special."

With that, she opened the latch, pushed open the metal door, and stepped aside for him to enter first.

Outside was a rooftop terrace, with a pavilion set up for lounging. In the warm yellow light, it was clear that plants and flowers surrounded the area.

More beautiful than these were the stars in the sky.

A dense array of stars painted a glowing river across the pitch-black night sky.

"Isn’t it just beautiful?"

He, like her, looked up at the sky and softly replied, "Yeah."

"The weather’s clear today, so the stars are particularly bright. Look at that big, shining star!"

Shane quietly lowered his gaze, turning to look at her by his side.

Her dark eyes seemed to hold all the stars. As she gazed at the starry sky, her eyes blinked from time to time, and her long lashes seemed to brush against his heart, leaving it tingling...
