Chapter 140 - 140 - Birth of a New Sword Emperor

Sword Sanctuary

At that moment, Ghislaine Dedoldia was standing in front of Gall Farion, the Sword God.

Eyes closed, posture erect, with her hand on the handle of the wooden sword fitted in its sheath. It was the draw stance of the Sword God Style.

A moment of silence hung in the air until, suddenly, Ghislaine's wooden sword left the sheath with such speed that not even the Sword Saints around could see the movement.

Still, in the very next instant, Gall's wooden sword collided with hers, with even greater speed and power, generating an impact wave that sent her flying backward as if she were a feather before a hurricane.

A loud crash echoed throughout the Sword Sanctuary when Ghislaine was thrown. She quickly spun, her feet dragging on the ground as she regained her balance.

Gall smiled and rested his wooden sword on his shoulder, a gleam of satisfaction in his eyes.

"You are improving very quickly, Ghislaine!" Gall exclaimed with enthusiasm.

He looked at Tymohty and Clint, who were training with wooden swords a little further away, and said in a teasing tone:

"Maybe you're even faster than they are...?"

Ghislaine composed herself quickly, brushing the dust off her clothes. With a firm look, she replied:

"I'm not improving as fast as Rygar..."

Gall let out a loud laugh.

"Hahahaha! Rygar is blazing his own trail. Even with overflowing talent, he won't leave you that far behind!"

Ghislaine nodded silently. She was currently training in the Beast God Style with Rygar and the Sword God Style with her master Gall Farion.

Furthermore, before he left, she occasionally sparred with Auber, and on top of that she trained with Reida Reia herself to get used to fighting with different styles.

Unlike her, Eris and Rygar, although also training under the guidance of Gall Farion, were treading their own paths within the Sword God Style, seeking something that could even surpass their master.

She had also been asked if she wished to follow an original path.

However, Ghislaine had already trained up to the King level under Gall's tutelage. She knew his strengths and preferences.

She decided, then, to learn everything she could directly from her master's Sword God Style, to absorb every teaching of the Sword God.

Only after that did she intend to further refine her personal fighting style, but based on the Beast God Style that Rygar was developing.

With a somewhat serious look, Ghislaine turned to Gall. He noticed her silence and said:

"What do you say, Ghislaine? You don't have another Sword King here to challenge for the title of Emperor... but if you defeat one of them, I can grant you the title too!"

These words caused a murmur among the swordsmen and apprentices around.

Everyone became tense as they saw Ghislaine put her hand to her chin and sink into deep thoughts. She did not answer immediately.

However, Gall's following words convinced her instantly:

"Rygar would probably have a pleasant surprise when he returned..."

It was then that a slight smile appeared on Ghislaine's face. Her tail, previously still, began to sway happily. She looked at Gall with renewed confidence.

"Then let's go."

That day, in the Sword Sanctuary, a new Sword Emperor was born after many years.

---

In the middle of a clearing, a group of swordsmen gathered around a campfire.

They appeared normal, but one detail made them stand out from any other similar group: a huge red dragon slept right next to them while they roasted a barbecue.

Telling an exciting story was a red-haired girl.

"And then, when he finished regenerating, Rygar began fighting that North Emperor one-on-one, while I, Skoll, and Ghislaine distracted the others! Ugh, that elf is still extremely annoying with those unenchanted magics, even remembering it now! I bet I could take her down with one blow right now!" Eris said, her eyes shining with excitement.

Nina asked curiously while biting her skewer:

"I've seen Rygar fight with magic, but I don't see how a mage could match a warrior without also knowing something about fencing. Even little Aisha wouldn't be able to dodge the first strike. Magic isn't fast enough..."

Aisha puffed out her cheeks in discontent.

Isolte added, "I agree. In the Water God Style we have techniques to cut magic. I believe that a pure mage wouldn't be much of a challenge for a swordsman."

Eris frowned, a bit irritated, "It's much harder than it seems... Rygar! Show them!"

Rygar was currently correcting Jino's posture. He was teaching him the fundamentals of the Beast God Style.

After noticing the boy's talent, he thought of testing if that talent was limited to the Sword God Style or if it extended to all schools of fencing.

Jino also looked at the girls when Rygar was called.

Rygar said, "Magic is much more versatile than fencing if you're capable of mastering it without enchantments. Even if you can only shorten the enchantments, it would still be enough to defeat many enemies, if you're far enough away."

He paused as he approached. "Look at Aisha, for example. She's only five years old. There's still a lot of room for improvement. When she's your age, don't you think she could defeat you with just magic?"

Nina and Isolte became thoughtful while Aisha smiled proudly.

Jino interrupted, "But no matter how fast your magic gets, can it be faster than the Longsword of Light?"

Rygar laughed, "Remember what I said a few days ago?"

Jino frowned, recalling, "Speed is important, but it isn't everything in combat... but... didn't the Sword God always say that, in the end, the only thing that matters is being faster than your opponent?"

Rygar answered while walking to the center of the clearing: "Even the Sword God can make mistakes, even being so strong. Let's go. I'm going to demonstrate. Except for magic, I won't use anything else to defeat you. I'm not even going to move from this same spot!"

Nina was surprised and then delighted, "Without close combat? Ha! I'm finally going to beat you once!"

Eris seemed interested and excited to see them get beaten, since she already knew the extent of Rygar's magic, and Aisha was just starting in fencing and wouldn't fight either. Isolte, on the other hand, was interested.

Rygar said, "Since you're so excited, Nina, you go first."

Nina stepped forward and became serious as she took her stance.

The group gathered around the two fighters.

Nina was positioned, preparing to use the Longsword of Light.

In an instant, she advanced toward Rygar with impressive speed. However, Rygar, with a simple gesture—raising his hand slightly—transformed the ground in front of Nina into a muddy field.

Her momentum was immediately cut off, her steps sinking into the slippery mud.

Before she could resume her charge, a wall of earth rose before her, followed by another and another. Thorns began to grow from the ground, threatening to embed themselves anywhere on her body.

Nina had to dodge and retreat quickly to avoid the sudden dangers.

The magical onslaught did not cease. Gusts and wind bullets, cutting stones, and beams of flames swept across the field, forcing Nina to remain in constant motion, evading the magic and trying to find a safe angle to execute her technique.

Her eyes desperately searched for a gap.

It was then that she saw Rygar gathering an absurd amount of mana. A huge ball of fire was forming before him, its orange-scarlet glow lighting up the clearing as if it were a second sun.

Nina stopped running, gasping, sweat streaming down her face.

"I give up!" she exclaimed, raising her arms.

The fireball dissipated slowly until it completely vanished. Rygar relaxed his stance.

Nina returned to the group, still breathing heavily, as if she had just escaped death.

'Even with that short fight... I was fighting for my life...' she thought, panting.

But she didn't seem convinced. Still unsatisfied, she muttered:

"If I had known about that mud field from the start, it wouldn't have ended like this..."

Eris crossed her arms and replied with a sarcastic smile:

"You really didn't think you'd win, did you?"

A vein appeared on Nina's forehead, indicating her irritation.

"Jino! Defeat him! Be careful with the mud field at the beginning and it will work!"

Rygar just smiled calmly. Jino, nervous, walked to the center of the arena.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart, and then focused entirely on Rygar, who maintained that enigmatic smile.

With a sudden burst of movement, Jino advanced, executing a perfect Longsword of Light.

However, before he could even fully leave his spot, a thick fog covered the battlefield, obscuring his vision.

Confused by losing his sight, he instinctively halted his attack.

In the next moment, a blue flash cut through the fog. A lightning bolt struck Jino precisely, hurling him far to the ground with a dry thud.

The fog disappeared when Rygar used a gust of wind, revealing the fallen and dazed boy.

"Magic is really convenient..." murmured Isolte, with a mix of frustration and admiration.

Rygar approached, healed Jino with a simple spell, and helped him up. The boy still seemed a bit in shock, his eyes wide, trying to understand where he was.

"With these tactics... can't you already defeat the Sword God?" he asked, still stunned.

Rygar laughed at the idea.

"That's impossible. His sword would be faster than any magic I could try to cast. Perhaps, if I hit him from very far away, I would have a chance. But I doubt he would just stand there watching."

He looked at the group, explaining:

"I can only defeat you because my casting speed is very high, you hardly know anything about magic, and besides, I can predict what you're going to do. We started at fifteen meters, but I would need more distance the faster the opponent is."

Rygar raised one of his hands, conjured a spark, and concluded:

"But since I can mix magic and close combat in various ways, there's no need to limit myself to just one of these two."

Then he looked at Isolte. Everyone in the group followed her with their eyes. The girl raised her hands in surrender:

"Hm?! No, no. I'm already convinced. We don't need to fight..."

Eris let out a malicious laugh.

"What? Didn't they teach you to cut lightning at your school?"

That phrase sparked the flame.

Isolte frowned, starting a discussion with Eris and Aisha. Nina soon got involved as well, defending Isolte.

The scene turned into a heated debate among the four about magic and fencing, but, to any observant onlooker, it demonstrated the closeness and friendship among them.

Rygar watched everything with a slight smile on his lips. In silence, he looked at Jino by his side, and thoughts began to form.

While he enjoyed that atmosphere of peace, his mind took him to a darker place.

'If Eidar were alive...'

His eyes turned to Isolte.

'He'd probably be with her now. How would he deal with Jino? They'd probably be friends... Eidar wasn't much of a talker either...'

Gradually, fury began to boil within him again. A name sliced through his mind like a blade:

'Orsted...'

Eris seemed to feel something. Her eyes turned to Rygar. He noticed her gaze and quickly suppressed his fury. Then, he turned to Jino and said:

"Jino, come with me."

And he walked away without looking back. His thoughts still raged, but now he thought of Eris.

'This girl's senses are very sharp...' he thought.

Eris watched Rygar's departure for a few seconds. But, seeing that he said nothing more, she returned to the conversation, thinking it had been her imagination.

Rygar and Jino walked to another part of the clearing and Rygar continued teaching Jino the fundamentals of the Beast God Style, and while he executed a movement, Rygar asked:

"Jino, do you like Nina?"

Jino stopped training and looked at Rygar, answering seriously, with a challenging look:

"I do."

Rygar thought, 'Hoh? This kid is challenging me? Wait... could it be...?'

Then he said: "You... do you think that I want Nina for myself?"

Jino was surprised:

"You don't?"

Rygar laughed and said:

"I confess that she is a beautiful young lady, but I have no interest in taking her as my wife..."

Jino relaxed: "Phew..."

Rygar continued: "But she seems to have an interest in me..."

Jino became nervous. Nina really always looked at Rygar with a look of admiration, even when they were training together; Rygar was a frequent topic in conversations. Rygar continued speaking:

"You know why?"

Jino became confused and hesitantly said:

"Because you're handsome?"

Rygar choked and replied:

"No, man! What do you mean!" he thought for an instant and then said, "I mean... maybe that contributed a bit, but there are other handsome guys. What sets me apart is that I'm strong!"

Jino thought about it. The more he reflected on Nina's interactions with Rygar, the more he believed that it was probably true. Rygar continued:

"I know that you and Nina have always been close, since forever, and therefore I have no intention of stealing her from you. For now, everything she feels for me is admiration. But a woman's emotions are unpredictable. If you don't want to lose her, you need to become stronger."

He let Jino absorb his words before continuing:

"You have the talent for it. It just depends on whether you really want to do it. You hear what the Sword God always says about fencing, right? You must wield your sword for yourself and for your goals."

Jino reflected on Rygar's words. He stayed silent for a while, thinking, and then said:

"I understand..."

Rygar nodded, and then continued training Jino in the fundamentals of the Beast God Style, while the boy quickly absorbed the knowledge.
