Chapter 106: Rebellion

After Ji Hui ordered the soldiers to kill anyone who dared to leave Xiquan City without his permission, the discontent in the hearts of the common people reached a new high.

Sitting around an old wooden table inside a small house located in one of the slums of Xiquan City, a man in his forties looked at his wife and children.

Seeing their sunken cheeks, thin bodies, and sickly complexions, he clenched his hands tightly until his knuckles turned white.

After a long silence, he finally said, "I have made my decision."

When he said this, everyone in the room perked up and waited for him to continue.

Taking a deep breath, the middle-aged man added, "I have spoken to the others, and they have all agreed to our plan."

When his wife heard this, she reached out to hold his tightly clenched fists and asked, "Children’s father, is there really no other way?"

The middle-aged man looked at her in silence for a moment before shaking his head. "There is no more food or water left in this city. With General Ji sealing the gate, our only way out is gone. If we can’t leave this place today, we will die. Instead of waiting to die, I’m willing to fight for a little chance of survival."

He paused for a second, then added with determination in his voice, "In our current situation, the only way to survive is to rebel."

As his voice echoed through the small room, everyone lowered their heads, and the atmosphere turned heavy.

Seeing that her husband had made up his mind, the middle-aged woman tightened her grip on his hand and said, "I don’t ask you to become a hero. I only ask you to come back alive."

Hearing this, the middle-aged man nodded.

He looked at her and instructed, "Wife, later, someone will open the city gate while we distract the soldiers. You must take our daughters-in-law and the children and rush out. Don’t wait for us. As soon as you get out, head straight to Xiqiang City."

Tears welled up in the middle-aged woman’s eyes at his words. She held them back and asked, "What about you and our sons?"

Patting her hand gently, the middle-aged man replied, "Don’t worry about us. Once we have helped the women and children escape, we will find an opportunity to leave the city."

Though she knew her husband was only saying that to comfort her, the middle-aged woman nodded and said with a choked voice, "All of you must come back alive. Me, our daughter-in-laws, and our grandchildren will wait for you and our sons in Xiqiang City."

The middle-aged man smiled and hugged his wife. When their sons saw this, they too embraced their wives and children. After today’s separation, none of them knew whether they would ever see each other again.

After spending a while saying their goodbyes, the middle-aged man said, "Go and pack."

With that, the women went to gather their belongings while the men picked up hoes, sickles, and pitchforks—ready to fight the soldiers for their families’ survival.

Before long, most of the women, the elderly, and children had secretly gathered near the city gate, while the men made their final preparations.

Half an hour later, while Ji Hui was eating a simple meal with his wife, concubines, and children in his mansion, the rebellion began.

After making sure that only a few guarding soldiers were left at the city gate, the leader of the rebel force shouted, "Charge!"

Startled by the sudden shout, the soldiers turned toward the source of the voice. When they saw a large group of people charging toward the city gate with various farming tools, they were shocked.

Coming to his senses, the captain in charge of the city gate quickly shouted, "Quick! Go report to General Ji! The citizens are rebelling!"

"Yes, Captain!" a soldier replied, sprinting toward the General’s Mansion.

Unfortunately, before he could leave the city wall, he was struck down by the rebels on the back of his head and lost consciousness.

Seeing this, the rebel leader commanded, "Don’t kill them! Focus on opening the city gate!"

Most of the Ji Army soldiers were citizens of Xiquan City and even family members of the rebels. Instead of killing their own people, the rebels focused on opening the city gate so the women, children, and elderly could escape.

Following the order, the rebels quickly subdued the gate guards and seized control of the city gate. Once they opened the city gate, they formed a human barricade.

The leader then signaled to those in hiding and shouted, "Run! Now!"

Without hesitation, the women carried their children and led the elderly, rushing toward the city gate.

Seeing more soldiers approaching, the rebel leader shouted anxiously, "Run faster!"

Just as a few people made it out of Xiquan City, the soldiers arrived. The captain drew his sword and commanded, "Kill all of them!"

The moment his voice rang out, the rebels raised their weapons and faced the soldiers head-on.

"Attack!"

With that command of the captain, the two sides clashed.

"Ahh!"

"Ugh!"

Soon, blood covered the ground, and screams echoed through the city gate.

As their loved ones fell under the soldiers’ spears and swords, the women froze and cried out.

"Father!"

"Husband!"

"Son!"

Seeing his wife and daughters-in-law calling for him and his sons, the middle-aged man, whose body was already pierced by a soldier’s spear, grabbed the spear with his remaining strength, gritted his teeth, and shouted, "Run! Don’t look back!"

Just as the words left his mouth, a few more spears pierced his body from behind.

Stab! Stab! Stab!

"Cough!" The man coughed up another mouthful of blood.

Looking at his wife, he opened his mouth weakly as blood spilled from his lips, "R–run...."

Closing her eyes, his wife turned around, grabbed her grandson, and escaped the city as her tears dripped to the ground.

As the middle-aged man watched his wife’s back disappear into the distance, he smiled one last time before drawing his final breath.

In less than an hour, most of the rebels were killed. The few who survived were arrested and thrown into the dungeon to await punishment.

That day, the air in Xiquan City was thick with the scent of blood and burning flesh. For those who survived, the events at the city gate would haunt them for the rest of their lives.
