Chapter 34: I Can’t... Breathe

West weaved through sweeping arcs of the sword, feeling the dark energy skim past his skin, numbing the air with its pressure.

Each miss sent shockwaves through the chamber, gouging stone, cracking walls, shaking loose debris from the ceiling. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

West’s heart pounded but he smiled grimly.

’I can do this.’

He landed another hit to the creature’s knee this time.

The joint bent wrong causing the guardian to roar as one of its massive leg buckled. It dropped to one knee in the next instant.

"Got you," West muttered.

He shot forward and drove his fist straight into the creature’s face.

The impact snapped its head back.

The giant body crashed down, causing the ground to shatter beneath its weight.

West leapt onto it without hesitation and rained his fists down upon the guardian’s face.

Bam!

Once.

Bam!

Twice.

Bam!

Again.

Bam!

Again.

Bam!

Again.

Each punch landed with a wet, bone-rattling thud as cracks spread across the creature’s scaled face. Dark ichor splattered against West’s arms and chest. He ignored it, clenching his teeth as his vision narrowed to a single purpose.

Don’t let it get up!

The guardian thrashed beneath him, roaring and clawing at the stone.

West raised his fist again but suddenly—

The creature’s hands snapped shut around both of West’s wrists.

His eyes widened.

Before he could react, the guardian heaved.

West was ripped off its body and flung across the chamber like a broken doll.

He slammed into the wall again and the impact drove the air from his lungs in a painful burst. Stone cracked outward from where his back hit, and he slid down, coughing violently.

The creature rose slowly, clearly anguished as its glowing yellow eyes locked onto him.

It looked down at the massive black sword lying at its feet which was still held up by his other hand...

Then—

It released it.

The sword hit the ground with a deafening BOOM, like a meteor striking earth. The entire chamber shook as the blade embedded itself halfway into stone.

West stared, confused. ’The sword is that heavy? Why would it—?’

He didn’t get to finish the thought.

The guardian blurred.

One moment it stood several meters away.

The next—

It was right in front of him.

West barely registered the movement before a colossal fist came down.

He rolled in between the guardian’s legs just in time and the punch obliterated the section of wall he’d been leaning against causing stone to explode outward in a cloud of dust and fragments.

West sprang to his feet, right behind the guardian and tried to counter—

But the creature’s tail moved.

The eyes along it snapped open, glowing bright.

The tail slammed into West’s chest like a battering ram.

CRACK.

West flew with his body twisting in midair. Pain detonating through his ribs as something gave inside him.

Before he could even orient himself—

The guardian vanished again.

A brutal kick slammed into his stomach midair.

West vomited blood.

His body spun uncontrollably, crashing through protruding rock formations one after another—thud, crack, smash—until he finally ricocheted off the stone and plunged into the dark pool with a massive splash.

All he felt was a shocking cold spreading though his body... which dulled the pain for a moment.

Water rushed into his mouth and nose as he sank beneath the surface.

Pain returned instantly from every direction of his body...

His limbs felt heavy and unresponsive.

Blood clouded the water around him, creating dark tendrils that drifted like ink.

Before he could even try to swim, a massive hand shoved him downward.

The guardian forced him under, pressing him against the pool’s floor with overwhelming strength.

West struggled... kicked... and thrashed.

But his body betrayed him.

Something was broken... Several somethings.

His chest screamed every time he tried to draw breath. His arms shook uselessly against the crushing force pinning him down.

His vision blurred and black spots crept in at the edges.

’I can’t... breathe...’

Water burned his lungs.

Panic filled his thoughts at this moment.

’No... Not here... Not like this. Not when I finally have the opportunity to make something spectacular of myself! I can’t let it end here... I refuse to die a virgin!’

’Move—!’

His thoughts fractured, scattered and slipped into different vicissitudes of life. He saw potential and wanted to very much live up to it... he would regret it if he died here...

The guardian’s face loomed above him through the water with cold glowing and merciless eyes.

Unfortunately, no matter how much he tried, there was no freeing himself from this beast.

West’s strength was gone...

His consciousness soon began to fade.

’So this is it...?’

No.

Something deep inside him answered.

He felt something pulsate inside him...

At first it was like a gentle pull... and then it turned even stronger as another pulsates..

It was the branches...

His awakening branches.

They lit up within him, like two brilliant pathways igniting within his core and sretching outward beyond his body... beyond the ruin... beyond the world.

West felt them connect elsewhere... to a place he didn’t know.

The pressure on his chest remained but his mind was suddenly elsewhere.

Soon he found his mind eye standing in a vast, endless space and before him floated doors.

Hundreds of them... spinning around... spreading... moving... increasing...

Soon, they were in the thousands.

They spun slowly in an infinite void, each one different in shape, size, and color. Some were made of stone, others of bone, others of light or shadow. Some radiated warmth. Others exuded cold dread.

They came in different sizes with some being as vast as a mountain.

Creatures stirred behind them...

Worlds waited...

West didn’t have time.

His lungs were burning... his heart was slowing.

There was no time to choose... He immediately reached for the nearest door.

It glowed up the moment his hand touched it.

However, before the door could open up, West ran out of oxygen.

Everything went black as he lost consciousness.
