My Enemy Became My Cultivation Companion-Chapter 814 - 507: Meeting the Dragon King (Double-Length, Part 2)
Unaware of where it came from.
A chilling cold crept up Dong Gong Ruoshu's back, and she furrowed her brow, shouting:
"Who goes there, come out."
The tone was almost scolding, yet the person did not get angry, only chuckled softly, and the sound of crisp footsteps echoed within the temple. Dong Gong Ruoshu saw a young man with handsome features and dressed in a scholar's robe emerge from behind the statue.
With his appearance, the surrounding cold eased considerably.
Dong Gong Ruoshu blinked, wondering if this person had been in this dilapidated temple all along. She hadn't even noticed.
"Who are you?" Dong Gong Ruoshu asked.
The man in the scholar's robe laughed instead, saying, "Why don't you guess who I am?"
Such a dialogue seemed to imply the visitor was not friendly.
Dong Gong Ruoshu, however, tried hard to think it over and said, "Entering a shabby temple, one often encounters ghosts, and if you do encounter a ghost, it's often a fierce ghost. If you're a fierce ghost, you must have felt wronged in life and died even more unjustly. Saying a thousand and ten thousand things, you definitely are not human, and if you are human, you're not normal."
The man in the scholar's robe looked surprised but, without a chance to reply, horse hooves could be heard clattering, mingling with thunderous spring sounds in the cold mountain forest.
"Who dares to bring trouble here, blocking the road of court officials?!"
Although Wei Wuque was a eunuch, his loud shout was so full of vigor that it startled birds in the forest.
Upon hearing the words "court officials," the man in the scholar's robe frowned, coldness seeping from his demeanor, while Wei Wuque's foot was half off the stirrup, his hand gripping the hilt of his waist sword, ready for confrontation.
"Lord Wei, you are mistaken," Dong Gong Ruoshu turned to explain, "he is not human."
The man in the scholar's robe paused, twitching the corner of his mouth.
She then turned her head back and said, "Sorry, haha."
Wei Wuque paused as well, feeling both amused and serious at the same time, gripping his sword tighter.
However, perhaps because of Dong Gong Ruoshu's words, the cold inside the shabby temple dissipated as the man in the scholar's robe stroked his beard and laughed a few times, saying:
"Do not misunderstand, I harbor no ill intent."
With that, he waved his hand, causing the withered vines entwining the plaque to fall, revealing ancient, rugged characters that read: River God Temple.
Wei Wuque was taken aback; they had set out from the Capital City, heading south along the renowned river routes, knowing only of Qingyi River stretching six hundred miles. Could this demon actually be the Qingyi River God?
Eiji or Jiao Long!
Dong Gong Ruoshu also widened her eyes at this moment, never imagining that the River God himself had appeared, saying: "Is he really the River God?"
"Who else dares to call themselves Jiao Long in the seven hundred miles of Qingyi River waters?" The River God retorted, continuing, "My descendants are preparing to cross water here, thus blocking the road to drive away people, not out of malice."
Wei Wuque was enlightened, no wonder they felt they were going in circles and taking detours all this while and that spring cold came so quickly.
The River God turned and looked at Dong Gong Ruoshu, leisurely asking, "The female knight can tell that I am not human with just one look; indeed your eyes are sharp, but why, why speak so directly that I am not human?"
Wei Wuque squinted his eyes, feeling a slight chill in his heart. In the mortal world, demons are born inferior to humans and often face discrimination and adversity. Hence, human-shaped demons and ghosts are extremely sensitive about their identities. If a person answers poorly, they might anger the River God, resulting in dire consequences.
"Why should you be angry when I call you not human?"
Dong Gong Ruoshu seemed oblivious to the danger, reasonably retorting:
"For example, if I were to insist you are a dog when you are not, you'd be angry, right?"
"...Of course I'd be angry."
"Similarly, since you aren't human, if I insist you are human, you'd definitely be angry."
The man in the scholar's robe held still for a moment, then after a while could only laugh: "What an intriguing person."
With that, he stood still and formally gave a bow.
Dong Gong Ruoshu quickly clasped her hands in return.
After the exchange of courtesies, the River God laughed heartily and said, "Old trees grow many roots, old people gain much wisdom, today I did encounter a noble lady."
...…
As the sky slowly transitioned from dark to light, warmth spread within the mountain forest, and the Qingyi River God stood up, bowing to take leave.
Outside the River God Temple, the spies of Xique Pavilion stood tense, contrasting starkly with the joyous atmosphere inside the temple not long before.
Within the temple, Wei Wuque observed, his demeanor calm and focused, like a clay sculpture, listening without daring to interrupt. Their conversation was so lively it made him feel like he was sitting on pins and needles.
The River God mentioned the difficulty and danger of transforming from Jiao to Dragon, Donggong Ruoshu quipped, "A spring rain brings a chill, isn't it cold to cross the river at this time?"
The River God inadvertently brought up past grudges with the court when transforming, prompting Miss Donggong to inquire deeply for clarity.
When the River God spoke about practicing for years, only consuming herbs, vegetables, flowers, and fruits, taking in and expelling clear air of heaven and earth, Miss Donggong said, "You're underestimating me; I can eat lamb, beef, dog meat, snake, frog meat..."
Miss Donggong could talk about anything, daring to touch any topic with ease.
Wei Wuque didn't know how many cold sweats he had shed, aware that if he lingered any longer, he might lose half his life. Demons are difficult to predict, and the Jiao Long type is particularly quick-tempered. The Jing River Dragon King once dared to confront the Emperor of the mortal world, who knows if the Qingyi River God is consistent in emotions?
Seeing the Qingyi River God about to depart, Wei Wuque secretly released a breath of relief.
Then, a voice spoke, "River God, I still don't know your name."
In an instant, Wei Wuque felt a chill deep within; how could anyone dare ask for the name of such a Great Demon?
The man in the scholar's robe had one foot outside the temple, turning his head, squinting slightly, revealing some white vapor at the corner of his mouth in the shape of a dragon.
Miss Donggong, oblivious, said, "My name is Donggong Ruoshu."
The River God paused slightly, seemingly touched by the girl's openness, sighed, and then clasped his hands together.
"I have been the River God for hundreds of years, have carried thousands of scholars and literati, seen innumerable seeds of culture, even Li Bai died trying to capture the moon in my river. Having been influenced by all this, I dare say I've read a few books, knowing Saintly sayings, so I took a scholar's name Yuan Qi, courtesy name Zhi Gui."
"Well then, goodbye Mr. Yuan," Donggong Ruoshu waved her hand.
"If the lady knight from Donggong visits the water palace, I shall welcome her warmly."
With that, Yuan Qi strode out, laughing heartily, gradually his laughter turned into a howl, stepping out, his whole body transformed into mist, and a cyan dragon body rose breaking through the sky.
"Roar."
From afar, other Jiao Longs seem to respond with howling, silencing the forest birds and animals.
Inside the temple, Donggong Ruoshu dusted off her legs, turning to meet Wei Wuque's complex gaze.
"Lord Wei, what's wrong?"
Wei Wuque didn't know what to say, whether Donggong Ruoshu's sincerity moved Yuan Qi or Yuan Qi's inherently gentle nature, or perhaps both. Finally, he grasped his hand, realizing it was full of cold sweat.
He asked with a wry smile, "Why aren't you scared at all?"
"I might be a little scared, but since being born human is rare, if I fear this and that, it defeats the purpose of living, right?"
"..."
Upon hearing this reply, Wei Wuque could only smile wryly; in the end, he had just one thought.
He could not deal with this little ancestor, he'd have to let Chen Yi handle it.
......
After bidding farewell to the Gao Residence and leaving the county city, Chen Yi and Yin Tingxue continued southwards.
Travelling along the road intersected with ruts, under the bright sun, the earth cold yet slightly warm, it seemed a late spring chill was not far.
In recent days, Chen Yi felt more and more self-restrained.
Not only had he not succumbed to the allure of beauties along the way, nor had he been moved by any attractive ladies, he also hadn't complained about Yin Tingxue's lack of assets for days.
Added to that, it'd been days since he'd reminisced about Yin Weiyin's seemingly perfect figure.
Happy here, he did not consider Weiyin.
He believed he was long in possession of a strong will to be self-deprecating, just lacking a catalyst, and now even if Yin Weiyin stood before him unclothed, he could firmly say no.
"I'm too self-controlled," Chen Yi mused to himself.
Yin Tingxue blinked, resisting the urge to glance at him.
This subtle action naturally didn't escape Chen Yi's notice, but he was speaking the truth, matching words with actions, steady and upright, and since this Little Fox was always filled with thoughts, if he were to put on a stern face and say something, it might make her feel he was very serious… Damn it, forgot she could hear.
To demonstrate his self-control, Chen Yi grasped his little wife's hand, without the slightest sign of agitation.
