Chapter 107: Elijah’s Suffering

"If you didn’t meet with Elijah that night, then why would he go out of the house? And where did he go?" Brie frowned.

Caden casually rested his back and then rubbed his temple.

"I think it’s my sister."

Lucas and Brie glanced at each other.

"Sister? Caroline?" Lucas frowned.

Caden shook his head. "No. Mireya."

"What do you mean?" Brie asked.

"Mireya must be so worried so she asked Elijah to follow me. I’m sure of it. Elijah would never go out of the house unless someone told him to. And it’s not just someone. That person had to be super special to him." Caden explained.

"And you think it was your sister who asked him to follow you?" Brie had a frown on her face as she crossed her legs.

"Yes."

"What if it’s Elisa?" Lucas asked.

"No. Elisa would never ask Elijah because she knew he hates being outside."

"Investigator Lee is suspecting Elijah. They wanted to talk to him again. We have to do something." Lucas said.

Caden took a deep breath. "Elijah would never tell anyone about what happened that night. We don’t have to worry about him."

"Not worry? How can you be so sure? They already know that he went out. What would be his alibi?" Brie asked.

Caden chuckled. "They can’t just suspect him because he came late for a few minutes."

"But—"

"Brie be patient. Let Elijah tell his side."

Lucas and Brie didn’t force Caden to talk about Elijah.

"How about the car that they saw leaving before Brie and I left? How can we make an alibi about that?" Lucas asked Caden.

"I will not make an alibi. I did left that night, but it doesn’t prove anything. Only the footage outside Primrose was intact. Everything else has been taken cared of."

Lucas sighed. "Fine. I will trust your word. I do hope everything is fine."

When Investigator Lee arrived, Elijah calmly sat across from him.

"Do I need to be alone?" Elijah asked.

Investigator Lee shook his head. "Mr.Wilson and Miss Cross can stay."

Elijah nodded. "So what do you want from me? Did I already answer all your questions?"

Caden told Lucas and Brie not to say anything to Elijah. They were against it, but Caden was confident and trusted his cousin so much.

"Not everything."

As Lucas and Brie expected, Investigator Keisha showed them the black Rolls-Royce and Elijah’s car leaving the mansion.

"So what can you say about that?" Investigator Josh smirked.

But to their surprise, Elijah chortled.

"What about that? Does leaving the mansion that night will make me a suspect?"

"Then why didn’t you tell us that you left that night?" Investigator Brian asked with gritted teeth.

"No one asked me if I left that night."

"We asked what you did the night before the 26th, and you specifically said that you stayed in your room drawing." Investigator Lee said calmly.

"Oh! That. Well, you didn’t specifically ask if I left the house that night. And you didn’t mention the time so I just answered what I mostly did from the moment I woke up."

Lucas wanted to laugh. Elijah both looked smart and an idiot in his eyes. The prince was being sarcastic, but he’s stupid to think that Investigator Lee would let him mock them.

"This investigation is serious and we’re not here to play with you." Investigator Josh’s tone was almost shouting.

"Who said I was playing? My time is precious. I am a royal so I don’t have time to have fun. Ask me directly. Do not sugarcoat your words."

Everyone in the room was surprised. Brie glanced at Lucas and remembered what Caden said about Elijah.

Investigator Lee sighed. "Why did you go out that night? And why was your speed slower than usual?"

"You all did your research, but I guess all the news only left the good part about me." Elijah chuckled.

Investigator frowned. "And what do you mean?"

"Well, it’s true that I was in a racing team a few years back. I was the youngest racer to join F1. I loved racing. I loved being on the road. I loved the cheers of the people. I loved hearing them shouting my name. I had a fans club and they admired me with all their hearts. But those glory days were gone." Elijah paused and took a piece of paper from his pocket.

’Prince Elijah of Flousia is now blind!’

"I was with the Crown Prince when he was abducted a few years ago. He wasn’t the only one who almost died that day. Two men barged into my bedroom because they thought it was Caden’s. When they realized it was the wrong room, they ordered me to take them to him. I refused so they tortured me. They burned my eyes but still, I didn’t tell them where Caden was. Then, they threatened me with my sister’s life. So I had no choice but to bring them to Caden."

Lucas felt Elijah’s sorrow. He noticed Brie wiping her tears with her fingers so he handed her his handkerchief.

"I almost got blind. But my parents didn’t give up. I was treated but not healed. My left eye could not see any color at all so I decided to quit racing. Not just racing, but driving. That night, I heard that Lucas and Brie went to the new cafe. I know you might find it funny, but I was craving for their blueberry cheesecake so I followed them. I had to be careful because I can’t clearly see especially at night."

"And you expect us to believe that?" Investigation Bryan sounded so pissed.

Elijah showed the investigators some medical documents to prove his statement.

"My parents did everything to keep my illness a secret including the fact that I was the reason Caden was abducted. This is the only newspaper left about what happened. Everything else was destroyed. I kept it to remember what I did to my cousin."

Investigator Bryan could not hide his disappointment. A loud thud echoed in the living room when he kicked the center table.

And because of that, the royal guards acted quickly to protect the prince. The investigators were suddenly surrounded by armed men.

"Put your weapons down!" Elijah shouted, but no one followed his order.

Brie held Lucas’ hand. "They’re not listening."

"It’s because they only obey Caden. I think he ordered them to protect Elijah." Lucas whispered.

Investigator Lee didn’t look scared, but Investigator Keisha, Josh, and Bryan seemed shaken.

"Enough!"

Caden shouted as he walked toward the living room. The royal guards put down their weapons but were still in their guarding position.

"I apologize for my men’s action. They were just protecting the King’s son." Caden slightly smiled.

"Your Highness, we didn’t expect you to be here." Investigator Lee answered.

"I apologize again for coming here unannounced and for not meeting you earlier. I was exhausted and my friends were worried to wake me up." Caden sat beside Elijah.

"We understand. But now that you’re here, is it okay to ask you a few questions?"

Caden nodded. "Sure. Although I already know what you wanted to ask, go on."

The oldan glanced at Keisha and nodded at her.

"Your Highness, I am Investigator Keisha. Please state your full name."

"Caden Hulls-Richards, Crown Prince of Flousia."

"Where were you the night before the 26th of June?"

Caden laughed. "Let’s skip those unnecessary questions."

Elisa walked in with papers in her hand. She put everything on the center table and then stood to Caden’s left.

"You are free to check them." Caden smiled.

Investigator Lee’s brows curled and took one of the files. The other three investigators did the same.

"I indeed left that night to attend an urgent meeting. No one knew about it because I didn’t tell anyone. They were worried about me and Alira and I knew they would not allow me to get out of the mansion. But I am the Crown Prince and I have duties and responsibilities that I have to finish. Those files were the proof of my whereabouts that night. You can also ask the people who attended the meeting."

It took some time before Investigator Lee broke the silence.

"I guess you are all innocent. I don’t see anything unusual with these documents."

Caden nodded. "Then I guess we’re done?"

Investigator Lee smiled. "Yes. But can I request to speak with you alone?"

"No!" It was Elijah.

"It’s fine, Elijah. Everyone leave." Caden ordered.

The two men stared at each other while the others gave them time to talk.

"I know who killed Benjamin Miller. The papers didn’t prove anything."

Caden chuckled. "I really admire you for having a good eye. Do you think I showed you those files to prove our innocence?"

Caden noticed that Investigator Lee frowned.

"You’re curious. I like that."

"This is my last warning, Your Highness. I will give you time to think. Surrender or else I will tell everyone your little secret."

Caden smirked. "Oh, no, Investigator Lee. I will tell everyone your not-so-little secret if you don’t stop this investigation."
