Chapter 232: Chapter 232 City (1)

The final week of the production felt long and heavy.

Director Sylvia had finally wrapped up her film, and now the weight of post-production rested in Ruby’s hands. For two straight days, she sat in the editing room, eyes fixed on the screen, going through every scene with quiet patience.

She checked the transitions, the audio balance, the colors...every small thing that most people would overlook. She worked side by side with Vera and others and neither of them said much... because they all knew the real work was in the silence.

But even after those two long days, the project still wasn’t done.

There were too many files, too many last-minute adjustments. Ruby leaned back in her chair, eyes slightly tired, when Director Sylvia walked in.

"If you’re okay staying on for a few extra days," she said gently, "I’ll pay you extra. It’s only fair."

Ruby looked up and nodded with a soft smile. "Alright."

She didn’t have to worry about money anymore...not like before. Her robe business had finally taken shape, and her contracts with the vendors gave her steady income. She had savings now, and even comfort.

But the truth was...

She wasn’t planning to stop here.

The money she was earning now...every extra gem, every silent deposit, it all had a place.

Because her next step wasn’t small.

She wanted to start a tech business, something digital, modern, forward-thinking. And for that... she needed more.

So for now, she would keep saying yes.

She would keep earning.

And in the quiet hours between editing and planning, she had already started sketching ideas for her new projects. Children’s storybooks...hand-drawn, soft, and magical. She wanted to publish full sets, not just for sales... but to create something beautiful, something lasting.

And then there was her newest idea.

Fonts.

She had started designing custom font sets...soft curves, bold strokes, elegant letters with emotion. She wanted to sell full bundles. It was something she hadn’t seen many do here. If she succeeded, she could quietly set her foot in graphic design too.

It was all falling into place.

Quietly.

Step by step.

Ruby didn’t need noise.

She needed progress.

And she was making it.

Ruby’s life had finally started to settle.

Her robe business was running smoothly, her designs were protected, and her earnings were steady. The font bundle she was working on was almost ready to launch but to finish it properly, she knew she would need a good laptop. Something light, fast, and perfect for design work.

She also wanted to buy a phone but she could wait for those.

Right now, her focus was on something far more needed:

A car.

Her husbands couldn’t keep walking everywhere, especially not with rainy season approaching. In this world, the rain wasn’t just cold and wet. It burned soft like acid, making land slippery and dangerous. People had to wear special protective suits just to step outside during a storm.

And Ruby couldn’t imagine letting any of them walk through that.

So, she decided.

They needed a car.

It was early morning. The sky was still pale blue, birds chirping softly, and the wind felt fresh. Ruby finished packing a small bag, zipped it up, and looked at the boys as they hurriedly prepared.

Today was Adrian’s day off, and that made it the perfect time.

They were all going to the city together.

The local area only had Ecto bikes...quick, flashy, and fun—but definitely not made for carrying four grown ghosts and a witch. If she wanted a proper family-sized car, with safety and comfort, she’d have to look at real city showrooms.

And that’s exactly where they were headed.

They planned to stay the whole day look around, explore options, maybe even have dinner together before returning the next morning.

Julian packed extra clothes and snacks, folding everything neatly.

Milo bounced around the room, his energy endless. "City! City! City! Are we gonna buy a shiny one?! I want one with glowing wheels!"

Ruby smiled. "We’re just going to look first."

Karl fixed his hair dramatically in front of a small mirror. "If the car doesn’t match my aura, I’m not getting inside."

"You don’t own the car," Ruby said, walking past him.

"Yet," Karl replied with a proud smirk. "But once I sit in it, I’ll leave my royal energy behind."

Adrian stood by the door, already ready, his bag on his shoulder. He simply nodded when Ruby asked, "All set?"

And with that, they stepped out of the house together...bags packed, money safely tucked away, and soft excitement running quietly between them.

***

They are going to the city in Uncle Otis’s wagon.

Ruby had spoken to him a day in advance, and now, just after sunrise, the five of them sat inside bags tucked safely near their feet, wind gently brushing through the open sides of the wagon as the road stretched out before them.

The air was cool, fresh with early dew.

Everyone was... excited.

Even the quiet ones.

Milo had been bouncing on the seat since the moment they left. He peeked over the wagon’s edge, pointing out every tree, flower, bird, and bump on the road like it was his first time ever leaving the house. "Look! That cloud looks like a duck! Wait—is that a bug?!"

Ruby gently held his shoulder to stop him from flying out completely.

Karl sat with his arms crossed, pretending to be calm but his eyes sparkled like a child on his birthday. He kept shifting in his seat, trying to sit tall like a noble prince riding into the kingdom.

"Do you think they’ll have cars with glowing rims?" he asked suddenly.

"We’re not buying a spaceship," Ruby replied.

"But what if we see one?" Karl insisted. "If it glows, I’m sitting in the front seat first!"

Ruby rolled her eyes but smiled.

Julian sat beside her, unusually quiet. But his eyes... they were different. They weren’t just watching the scene...they were soaking it in. Every tree they passed, every sign, every distant shadow on the hills.

His hands were folded neatly in his lap, but his gaze was full of silent emotions.

Excitement. Wonder. Maybe even something like peace.

Adrian, as always, sat near the edge, arms resting on his knees, eyes focused ahead.

He didn’t speak. Didn’t move much.

But Ruby noticed.

The slight curve at the corner of his lips.

He was trying so hard to hide it but he was smiling. Just a little.

And that... made her heart feel full.

Ruby sat back, watching them all quietly.

The wagon rolled over a hill and the city slowly came into view...tall buildings, soft morning lights, and the distant sound of a world much bigger than theirs....
