Chapter 21: Destruction Dragon Eyes

"M-Mia... what the hell is that...?" Chris whispers.

She turns abruptly, confused by the sudden terror in Chris’s voice.

The moment she sees the creature emerging from the forest, she freezes with the same fear.

A monstrous brute over two meters tall, with corpse-like pale skin, gleaming red eyes, and long claws.

"T-That’s... a primordial vampire — the ancestor of modern vampires. Damn ferocious beasts, thirsty for blood. But... they shouldn’t have existed for millennia! None of this makes any sense..."

"And now... what do we do?"

"Isn’t it obvious?"

Mia jumps to her feet and grabs Chris’s hand.

"...we run!"

The two run like crazy in the opposite direction, but soon stop when another primordial vampire blocks their path.

Two more emerge on their right and left, cutting off every escape route.

The creatures are still far away, but they are closing in fast.

"As far as I know, primordial vampires have always been solitary creatures. Shit, I don’t like this."

Chris raises his katana in a defensive stance, ready to fight, but Mia signals him to lower it.

"You’re still too weak to face enemies like that. Leave it to me."

Chris obeys reluctantly. The idea of letting her handle everything doesn’t sit well with him, but he has enough sense to know that with his current strength he can do almost nothing — and might even get in Mia’s way.

The four primordial vampires drop onto all fours and charge even faster.

Mia is strong... but there are four of them, and I have no idea how strong they are. Even if she told me to stay out of it, I have to be ready to step in!

Chris’s worries vanish instantly as the Tear of Azkarith begins to shine, and bright tongues of pink flame swirl around her.

But that’s not what leaves Chris speechless. Nor are the reptilian pupils in Mia’s eyes.

It is her expression.

A sharp, almost sadistic look, paired with a grin that makes Chris’s skin crawl and terrifies him more than the four monstrosities rushing at them.

"Stay back, brother. I wouldn’t want to accidentally kill you too."

Chris nods silently.

M-Mia... what the hell happened to you...? You don’t even seem like yourself anymore...

Mia spreads her arms with disarming confidence, almost inviting the creatures to attack.

"How dare primitive beasts like you challenge me, the vampire princess? An unforgivable insult, but it will also be your last. Come on, you useless cockroaches, come forward! I will destroy you one by one!"

The primordial vampires are now only a few feet away. They leap at them with jaws wide open and claws ready to strike when Mia’s eyes ignite.

In a single instant, one after another, the four vampires are swallowed by flames that burst from inside their bodies, and their charred carcasses fall heavily to the ground at Mia’s feet.

Not even ashes remain.

A single glance from Mia was enough for the four primordial vampires to burst into flames through spontaneous combustion.

Destruction Dragon Eyes — the incinerating gaze — is only one of the abilities granted to the bearer of the Tear of Azkarith.

This ability allows her to reduce living beings to dust — as well as objects, spells, and even incorporeal entities.

But of all the abilities granted by the pendant, Destruction Dragon Eyes is the only one Mia can currently control.

At last, the pink flames around her fade, Mia’s eyes return to normal, and she collapses to the ground with no energy left in her body

When she used that power to neutralize Zaira’s attack on Chris, she was still able to stay on her feet. But after using it on four targets, she can barely keep from losing consciousness because of the immense mana cost.

Chris immediately rushes to her aid.

He helps her back to her feet, but her legs are so weak that he has no choice but to carry her.

"Mia! Mia! Try to stay awake, please! I’ll take you home so you can rest. Everything will be fine."

"I-I’m sorry... Chris... it... was all... my fault..."

With enormous effort, Mia manages to say those few exhausted words.

She would like to tell him many other things — apologize for dragging him there by disobeying Isabelle’s orders and for putting his life at risk — but she is so exhausted that she can’t even keep talking.

Yet her tearful, distressed eyes make that regret loud and clear to Chris.

"You have nothing to blame yourself for, Mia. If anything, I’m glad I came here with you — it helped you finally let out all the pain you were carrying inside. But now don’t try to talk anymore. Just focus on resting, okay? We’ll be home in a moment."

When Chris lifts her onto his shoulder, he feels Mia’s weak arms tighten slightly around him, as if she used the last of her strength just to hug him.

The gesture hits him deeply and instantly makes him forget the feeling of her large breasts pressed against his back.

Hey, you down there. Mia is not well and this isn’t the time for jokes, understood? Stay calm!

Chris has barely taken a few steps toward the path through the woods when a wave of terror freezes him in place.

Another primordial vampire — much bigger and more ferocious than the others — appears in the distance right in front of him.
