Chapter 149: Karma’s Favorite Hobby

"Who the hell are you, brat?!" Soren demanded, his voice filled with fury.

His group had finally started gaining momentum after he managed to recruit three more rogue wizards over the past few weeks.

The blonde bandit’s promise of leaving Bunroon alone had been genuine, as he and his crew were planning to walk away from the area with a huge sum of money after fulfilling the mysterious masked man’s request, enough to expand their operations in larger, less developed cities.

There would be no need to continue profiting off Bunroon Town’s citizens or the small merchant caravans passing through their territory if this major operation succeeded.

And yet, out of nowhere, a brat had appeared and killed two of his most important subordinates, one of whom had been his right-hand man for years.

How could Soren not be furious?

"Oh, me? Well, I’m the great Hal Fennec. Have you not heard of me?" Hal replied with narrowed eyes, walking closer without a hint of fear.

Flanner and the two other guild wizards widened their eyes upon hearing the introduction.

The bandit leader, on the other hand, had been too busy over the past few weeks to pay attention.

He didn’t care in the slightest about the Arcana Primis Cup and didn’t recognize Hal.

The wizards of the Imperial Wizard Guild, on the other hand...

"H-Hal Fennec! I knew it! I thought his face looked familiar!"

"I thought he was back at the academy. Why is he here?!"

Soren momentarily glanced at his adversaries on the other side, his heart suddenly racing at the sight of the young man’s cold gaze.

He didn’t know who this damned Hal Fennec was.

However, judging by their reactions, the brat was clearly well-known throughout the empire.

The bandit leader instinctively grew wary, quickly realizing he was in a bad position and immediately contemplating retreat.

Soren’s sharp sense of danger was what had made him so elusive, even to the guild.

He wasn’t about to start doubting it now.

If he felt the need to retreat, then it was likely because he truly had to.

His eyes darted around, scheming a swift and cunning escape.

The young man in front of him couldn’t have been more than twenty years old.

There was no way the bastard could contain him alone; perhaps that was why he had asked for Flanner’s help in the first place.

Having deduced this much, the bandit leader already knew what to do, and so, without hesitation, he ordered his men:

"Everyone, retreat! Barton, Emely, we shall carve a way out by eliminating the brat!"

This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Unfortunately, his instincts warned him that his lifetime would end here if he didn’t leave quickly.

"Aqua Prison!" Soren shouted as he waved his staff, prompting a deep blue magic circle to appear above the mysterious young man.

From it, a thick indigo bubble emerged, attempting to trap his target inside.

Hal easily [Blink]ed out of the way, though, reappearing closer to the green-haired, olive-skinned woman in her thirties, Emely, and catching her off guard with a [Piercing Light].

However, the seasoned rogue wizard didn’t panic.

She merely adjusted her aim and fired the conjured dagger she had been casting since earlier at the lethal ray of light shooting her way.

But to her horror, her dagger was easily obliterated, and while weakened, the Piercing Light still managed to penetrate her forehead, its power completely dissipating right in the middle of her brain.

The light spell didn’t completely pierce through her skull.

However, it was still enough to end her.

"EMELY!!" Soren roared as the latest source of his "entertainment" in the group collapsed onto her back with a thud, her eyes lifelessly staring up at the high noon sun.

"Bastard!!" shouted the remaining rogue wizard, Barton, his voice filled with fury and grief as he fired a Lightning Wave spell straight at Hal to avenge his fallen dearest.

Unfortunately, it was easily dodged with a [Licht Step] from the mysterious brat.

The last thing the grieving rogue saw was a flaming whip lashing out at his throat, viciously severing his head.

Naturally, Flanner’s squad wouldn’t just stand by and watch as the troublemakers attempted to escape.

Soren naturally began to panic after the last of his trusted wizard subordinates was taken out.

He swiftly went all out on Hal, casting one Aqua Serpent after the other while moving closer.

Unfortunately, how could he match a dual caster when it came to casting speed?

Soren’s spells were far more powerful than his D-ranked subordinates’ spells.

However, they were only as powerful as Hal’s [Glacial Shard] and could also be easily neutralized by the lower-leveled [Sparkblast], thanks to its elemental advantage.

Hal didn’t even break a sweat as he handled the flurry of water-elemental spells.

The bandit leader was shocked to find himself outmatched in casting speed by a mere brat, but he didn’t have time to dwell on it because Flanner’s squad was quickly routing his men.

He needed to escape before the path between him and the guild wizards cleared.

So, Soren began unleashing his stronger, higher-rarity water-elemental spells.

He fired Aqua Cutters, Aqua Blasts, and even summoned Geysers from the ground, not caring whether Hal lived or died.

He just needed the brat to get out of the darned way.

Unfortunately, Hal easily defended against the stronger projectiles using various defensive spells such as [Mana Barrier], [Reinforced Earthen Wall], and [Ice Wall].

The few that managed to break through were intercepted by his own elemental projectiles.

After all, if there was one thing no one could match Hal in, it was cast speed.

With just a wave of his hand or a flick of his fingers, he could instantly cast new spells to replace those defeated in a direct clash.

In short, nothing Soren did was working, and it became increasingly difficult for the usually cunning and elusive bandit leader to think clearly.

The creeping realization that death or capture was near weighed heavily on his heart.

He had never been in such a terrible situation before, mostly because every move he made was always carefully planned.

How could such a misfortune happen on the day of his group’s biggest operation?!

"Like I’ll let you bastards capture me!!"
