My Life In A Fantasy, Women-Dominated World-Chapter 48: The UDMs
Within Claire’s hospital room, chaos and chattering returned when her friends walked back inside.
They brought good news and bad news.
Good news that Claire will be discharged in an hour.
And the bad news is that it’s going to take one hour!
Yet, none of them planned to leave as they sat wherever they found a place to sit.
Eva sat beside me on the couch, along with Jaq and Katie.
While Lia found a chair and sat alone with grace.
I was glad that I was surrounded by such top tier beauties, but saddened that they were blabbering about topics that went right over my head.
Labyrinths, strategies, missions, blah blah blah.
But then, Jaq mentioned something that pulled my attention right away.
"Any of you planning to take part in the UDM? Registrations are open." she asked excitedly.
UDM.
I remember seeing the news about that yesterday, when I was on the hunt for knowledge about this world.
And it was a topic that was quite dominant on the news, but I didn’t get time to cover it much as no one around me seemed to mention it.
If I remember correctly, the full form was Unrestricted Death Match. As the name suggested, it was no joking matter.
And as Jaq’s words landed on everyone’s ears, they gasped collectively.
"Don’t tell me you are planning?!" Eva was the first to burst out, as if the mere idea of that was blasphemous.
"Jaqueline, all jokes are fine, but not this." Lia warned in a cold tone.
"Chill!" Jaq raised her hand to calm everyone down before Katie and Claire could offer their warnings.
"I was just asking, geez. I am not in debt, under a crime or a psychopath to even think about joining one!" Jaq clarified with exasperation.
"Then why mention it?" Claire asked with twitching eyelids.
"I don’t know, maybe one of you took part in it? It’s being held in Gammora, after all. Quite close by." Jaq shrugged, "I would’ve gotten a new idol to cheer from outside."
"Why don’t you join?" Katie scoffed, "I will cheer for you really hard."
"Geez don’t give her ideas, who knows, she really might." Lia facepalmed.
"I am not that dumb. I value my life." Jaq shot back, "If anyone should join among us, it should be you. We don’t have as many responsibilities on our heads, unlike you."
"Exactly." Lia smirked, "I have responsibilities. I am not like you who can gamble my life away in a freaking death game."
"Whatever. I was just asking." Jaq said before flicking her hair and going silent.
And seeing as no one was speaking, Eva glanced at me.
"You must be getting bored, hmm?" she chuckled, speaking in a low voice as to not involve others in the chat.
"A little," I answered honestly with a slight nod.
Eva giggled in response, "Do you know about UDM?" she asked casually.
"Well, I know its full form."
"Oh yeah? What is it?"
"Unrestricted Death Match." I rolled my eyes at her attempt to treat me like a child.
Do other guys actually like that? Damn.
"Mmhm," Eva hummed, "Do you know why they’re held?" she grinned.
And that got my attention as I shook my head, looking forward to her reply.
Eva chuckled at my curiosity, "It actually started as an entertainment show, where death row prisoners were given a chance to reduce their sentence, get parole etcetera etcetera."
Nodding, I urged her to continue.
"But the government didn’t expect it to be so liked by the audience, and its popularity shot up. Now many UDMs are hosted by them in various places, for money, fame, and several other benefits."
"What kind of benefits?"
"Many. Artifacts, tax reduction, hunting rights, and even inter racial visas. There are many reasons to enter the UDM, but well, it’s just a dangerous trap. UDM isn’t the place you can casually enter and expect to walk out alive."
"Inter racial visas?"
Eva grinned widely, "Yep! Although UDM was discovered and first hosted by us humans, now several other races take part in them.
Hell, in the Central there are UDMs hosted every once in a while, which have fighters from many races."
Central meant the central continent of Solaris, and although I knew many races coexisted on it, I had no idea that UDMs were that big a deal.
"Stop teaching him about such a bloody sport, Eva." Katie berated from the side, "Tsk, I wonder who died and gave you a healer class when you’re such a big fan of these bloody games."
Eva smirked as she turned to face Katie.
"My powers work on blood and flesh, sweetie." she flashed a sweet smile, "It’s only normal for me to be used to them."
"They are to heal them, not cause them." Jaq remarked with a few clicks of her tongue.
"Potato, potato." Eva waved off her remark easily.
But before Eva could continue her interesting lecture about the UDM, a gentle knock rang in the room before the knob was twisted open and a young, handsome man walked in.
He was pushing a cart along with him, dressed in the nurse outfit as he smiled at Claire.
"Are you feeling better, miss?" he asked politely.
"Yes." Claire nodded before turning towards Eva, "Did you get me crutches or wheelchair?"
"None, I thought Aaron could carry you home since he got stronger in the labyrinth." Eva teased playfully.
"Oh yeah?" Claire gave me a teasing glance, "Can you?" she chuckled.
"Of course." I nodded firmly. Woman, you dare question my strength?
I can climb Mount Everest while carrying you! Though I don’t know if it exists here.
"Hmm, let’s see then." Claire laughed it off, turning back towards the nurse and signing the documents that needed to be signed off.
The whole process took a couple more minutes as the nurse had to untie Claire’s bandages and remove other medical appliances.
After that was done, I don’t know how, but somehow Jaq was able to lure the man and engage him in a conversation while me and Eva went towards Claire.
"Seriously though, I hope you got me crutches, I don’t want to deal with the chair." Claire didn’t even think of the possibility that I should carry her, as she sighed at Eva.
And to be honest, it wasn’t even medically right for me to carry a bandaged patient when the crutches or a wheelchair could be much better for her.
But... was this the normal world?
Nope.
I slid closer to Claire, humming as I smiled innocently.
"Didn’t she say I will be the one carrying you?"
