Chapter 64: Best Day Of My Life

The courthouse doors swung open and the late afternoon light poured across the marble steps. For a moment there was quiet, just the murmur of people leaving other courtrooms.

Then someone spotted them.

"There he is!"

Within seconds the quiet exploded. Cameras snapped. Microphones shot forward. Reporters surged up the courthouse steps like a breaking wave.

"Damian Hill!"

"Mr. Hill! Over here!"

"Counselor! One comment!"

Damian stepped out first, his dark suit still perfectly pressed despite the hours inside the courtroom. Behind him walked Twenty Shots, bubbling with excitement.

In the past month, the press had chased Twenty and ignored Damian, but today they barely looked at him. Every camera was pointed at Damian and a reporter pushed forward through the crowd, microphone raised.

"Mr. Hill, Channel 7. You just secured the dismissal of a first-degree murder charge at a preliminary hearing. Legal analysts are already calling it the most shocking courtroom upset in years. Did you expect the judge to rule in your favor today?"

Damian didn’t stop walking.

"Justice is never surprising," he said evenly. "It’s simply rare."

Flashbulbs burst again and another voice shouted from the side.

"Mr. Hill! The prosecution said they had a strong eyewitness. You completely dismantled that testimony. Was that strategy planned from the start?"

Damian reached the bottom of the courthouse steps. Twenty’s black SUV was already waiting at the curb, engine running, the driver watching the chaos through the rearview mirror.

Twenty walked slightly ahead, scanning the crowd out of habit, but Damian rested a hand briefly on his arm and guided him toward the car door.

Seeing he wouldn’t give a response, they turned their attention to Twenty Shots.

"Twenty! Twenty! Do you have a comment after being cleared today?"

Twenty didn’t answer. His eyes flicked across the cameras, then to Damian. Another reporter, frustrated, leaned forward, nearly stepping into Damian’s path.

"Mr. Hill, some people are saying you embarrassed the State’s Attorney’s office today. Did you expect the prosecution’s case to collapse so quickly?"

Damian opened the rear door of the SUV and gestured for Twenty to get inside. Twenty slid into the seat without a word and Damian turned back to the press, still standing half between the open door and the crowd.

The microphones quickly clustered closer, hoping to capture the inspiring words of this phenomenal lawyer.

"Mr. Hill, is it true the key witness’s own mother testified against him?"

"Do you think the State will refile the charges?"

"Counselor, how did you convince her to testify?"

Damian gave a small, controlled smile.

"In court," he said calmly, "truth tends to reveal itself when people are finally asked the right questions."

The reporters scribbled furiously and another voice called out.

"Is this the biggest win of your career?"

Damian paused for just a second, contemplating whether to give a response or not, and then he closed the car door.

The driver stepped out, quickly moving around to open the front passenger side for him, but Damian waved him off and slid into the seat instead.

Inside the car, the noise of the reporters instantly muffled. Twenty leaned back in the leather seat, watching the crowd swarm the windows and a slow grin crept across his face.

"Man, you are the star of the show today." He said, raising his hand for a fist bump.

Damian adjusted his cuff calmly before giving him a fist bump with a smile.

"I did earn it." Damian wasn’t humble.

"You did!" Twenty nodded firmly with a grin.

He pulled out a cigarette pack from his pocket, pulled out a stick and passed the pack to Damian in the front, who took it and picked a stick while Twenty lit his. The two exchanged the lighter and cigarette packs while the driver pulled the SUV away from the curb.

Cameras flashed one last time as the black car disappeared into traffic, carrying Chicago’s most talked about defendant and the lawyer who had just become the most feared defense attorney in the city.

"There is three million cash in the trunk. Five hundred for you and the two point five for your friend." Twenty shot a glance into the rearview mirror while he spoke.

Damian lifted his head to meet his gaze and shot Twenty a small smile. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"My friend will be pleased to hear of your generosity." He grinned.

Despite the amount, Damian didn’t jump, neither did he show excitement. This amount would make any junior associate of a firm gasp, yet he seemed almost dismissive about it. This was how Twenty knew this kid was not as simple as he seemed. That’s why he needed to remain in his good graces since he was Twenty’s only contact with the mysterious man.

Damian obviously knew this and that’s why he made sure his masked persona maintained an enigmatic presence. Engaging with Twenty directly would make this thug eventually humanize him. His words and demands would carry more weight if they came through a third source. Damian’s goal was not to be a partner in crime with Twenty. He planned to rule over the entire underworld like a god.

The two made small talk about anything and everything until they got to the parking lot of the firm.

"I got you back for life for what you did for me, man. I’ll let your people know you are the only lawyer I want on all my cases!" Twenty gave him a firm shake from the window.

"I only did my job. Be rest assured, with me by your side, all your legal troubles are history."

Damian responded with a smile while clutching a bag filled to the brim with money almost like it weighed nothing. While stacking it up with hundred dollar bills, he made sure to weigh it when he was done and it came out around 30 kg, yet a lawyer was holding it up like it was nothing.

Thinking back to how the mysterious man always referred to Damian as his student, Twenty was beginning to believe this lawyer was also capable of some unusual tricks.

The two exchanged final greetings before his driver drove away, leaving Damian alone in the silence of the parking lot. Entering his car, he dumped the bag on the passenger seat and unzipped it.

His eyes shone with excitement at the sight of three million dollars layered over each other in cash. His heart was beating furiously, his soul buzzing with excitement, but on the outside he was calm, or at least he was trying to remain calm.

Having a mansion with three beautiful wives and three million dollars in cash is the success story of many, but for him it was only the starting point. If he made a big deal out of these little wins, how else was he supposed to react when he actually hit a major milestone?

"It’s okay to celebrate. You earned it, didn’t you?" Hazel’s voice rang from the back seat and a pair of slender arms wrapped around his neck from behind, but he didn’t panic.

From the rear view mirror, he watched Racheal, Ruby and Hazel materialize from thin air. He wasn’t surprised because he didn’t ask them to stay at home before leaving today. Only when he tells them to stay home do they stay home. Unless that happens, they just follow him everywhere invisibly.

He had gotten used to it.

"Yeah. You should invite your girlfriend too. Don’t you think it’s time she meets your wives?" Ruby said.

"True. We have a big home now. The more the merrier." Hazel seconded the idea.

Only Racheal remained quiet, staring at her feet. Only after a few seconds did she nod in approval.

"Clara is nice. It will be good to have her around occasionally." She said.

Damian revealed an exhausted smile. Clara only knows Hazel. It would be weird telling her "Hey, did I ever tell you I had two other wives?"

"Sure. I’ll bring it up and see what she thinks."

Since his girls asked, Damian decided to agree. However, he wasn’t going to stop there.

"But only on one condition!"

He turned over to meet their eyes, with a finger held up.

"We all go on a vacation. See the world and have fun."

There was no way in the world he would make three million and not spend at least a day in another country with his three favorite people.

"Only if you are bringing Clara along." Hazel quickly added and to his surprise, Ruby and Racheal nodded.

"She did help you with the case. So she should get to enjoy a vacation funded by its proceeds." Racheal’s voice trailed off as she was uncertain of what she was saying.

The only person left was Ruby. All three of them shot her a glance, wishing for a response. It took a few seconds before she finally gave one.

"While I would prefer to have you all to myself and my sisters, I don’t think it will hurt bringing her along. She will be your first concubine after all."

Damian’s soft gaze broke into light chuckles, which his wives joined in and soon all four were laughing at a joke that was never told in the parking lot.

From obscurity, to betrayal, then suicide and now he is here, a super powered millionaire who may just be the demon lord to the hell his ex will go to.

Who would have thought all these changes would take place in less than three months.

"Today is the best day of my life." Damian smiled
