My Mansion of Gorgeous Maids in Another World-Chapter 48: Holdrake
Chapter 48: Holdrake
Jett faced Roberto and the other commoners, explaining the situation. All of them stared at him with worried yet grateful expressions. Their time together had been brief, but they had fully enjoyed Jett’s hospitality.
"Thank you, my lord!" Roberto said, bowing deeply.
The others echoed in unison, "Thank you, my lord!"
"Don’t sweat it," Jett replied. "It was nothing. Once this is sorted, I’ll take you on one last ride across this part of the continent—I never break my promises. Until then, farewell."
"Farewell, my lord!" they called together.
Jett boarded his carriage, but from the corner of his eye, he noticed Ewelina sprinting toward them. She lacked her usual grace, likely having rushed over without time to attend to her appearance. Killing countless monsters must have cost her some rest. He left the carriage door ajar and let her peek inside. Once she looked in, he invited her aboard.
"Let’s talk inside," he said.
Ewelina climbed in and settled herself. "I understand. May I ask what’s the hurry?"
"This dragon plan’s worse than we figured," Jett explained. "There might already be carnage unfolding in the Stormcloud Dukedom’s capital."
Her face drained of color. Stormcloud’s capital was the most populous city in that dukedom—dragons attacking there could mean mass casualties. I have to find out everything I can, he thought.
"That brings me to my question," Jett said, snapping her out of her concern. "What do you know? How did you learn a dragon would strike here, and why is someone from a foreign dukedom involved?"
Ewelina drew herself up and answered respectfully. "Rain Bead Dukedom was first to spot and stop the monster attacks. I volunteered to patrol our borders in case more monsters appeared or someone needed aid. That’s when I encountered survivors from the Mist Cloud Dukedom fleeing toward us. They told me no noble helped them despite constant attacks. I decided to assist and breached our borders without authorization. Then I met the forest fairy and realized the Heart of the Forest might be under threat. It was entirely my initiative, Mr. Talon."
Jett nodded. Seems leadership makes all the difference. And she acted out of true compassion. While her actions revealed little tactical advantage, they spoke to her character.
He leaned forward. "So, what’s your take on this dragon-slayer magic? Grab a seat, by the way." We’re heading to the forest’s heart to receive its wind blessing before moving on to Stormcloud’s capital. If you’d rather skip it, feel free to stay behind."
"I’d be glad to join you," Ewelina said.
"Good," Jett replied.
"I feel incredibly lucky to wield this magic," she continued. It transformed me from a common townsfolk into a hero with responsibilities. It has given my life purpose: to protect my people. I treasure this calling and strive to become stronger so fewer innocent lives are endangered."
Humans selected their heroes differently than dragons: compatibility with slayer magic was the key.
Jett smiled. "Not bad at all. Just remember—this magic’s a real threat to dragons. Push too far, and they’ll fight back hard." They have every right to fight back. How far does your ambition go? Do you intend to slay all dragons, tame them, or simply defend your people?"
"Killing them all is—" Ewelina began, rising from her seat and pounding the table. She froze as Mia’s glare settled on her and sank back down, cheeks reddening. "I... I really haven’t thought that far."
Jett studied her. "How did humans first learn slayer magic?"
Ewelina’s mind drifted to a dark basement she had once seen. A single glowing forge stood surrounded by shadows, its design molded from a dragon’s jaw and scales—like a tamed, petrified beast brought to heel. A man in a blackened apron hammered molten scales into weapons and tools; only he could make the draconic metal pliable. When he looked over his shoulder, his golden draconic eye on a black eyeball pierced her soul.
"Holdrake was the one who brought this magic to humanity. He’s known as the Godfather of Slayers and crafted my longsword. He belongs to no dukedom or kingdom but wanders from place to place, teaching humans the way of dragonslaying."
Just then, Jett’s horses wheezed, signaling they’d arrived at the forest’s heart. He thanked Ewelina for the talk and led everyone outside. Fairies swarmed the carriage, inspecting its unique design and horses with curious eyes. Lulu flew out and smirked, drawing jealous glares. The head fairy shot her a warning glare before stepping toward Jett.
"Can we begin the wind enchantment?" she asked.
Jett nodded.
Ana closed her eyes and focused her mana, her presence growing solemn. The air around her shimmered and spread to every fairy, transforming even the most bubbly ones into composed, graceful attendants. They formed a circle around the carriage, extending their hands as silvery wind spiraled around Jett’s carriage and horses. The forest itself seemed to sway in time, grayish Sentinel leaves dancing in the silver breeze.
The enchantment completed in a silent flourish.
[Your carriage has received the Artemis Forest’s breeze blessing from the fairies.]
[Its endurance at high speed has been temporarily increased tenfold.]
[The speed of your Dark Ink Steeds has been temporarily increased tenfold.]
Jett approached the head fairy and said, "Thanks. I hope we reach the capital before anyone else gets hurt."
Ana replied, "I hope you succeed," forcing herself not to use his title in front of everyone.
He noticed her effort and smiled. Ana returned the smile, and for a moment it looked like they shared something private. The fairies all squealed excitedly. Soon, Jett and the others climbed back into the carriage.
"I’ll be back soon," Jett said.
"Have a safe trip," Ana said, waving goodbye like a dutiful wife.
Mia’s eyes flashed bestial red for a moment before she calmed herself.
Noctlisa caught her glare, felt a stir in her chest, then turned to the head maid. "Should we talk to her when we get back?"
"Of course not," Mia whispered, checking that Jett and Ewelina couldn’t hear. "We’re Master Jett’s maids. Getting in the way of his wishes behind his back is the worst sin. What if he’s thinking about a fling with that fairy?"
"Wouldn’t you rather he was into you?" Noctlisa asked bluntly.
Mia nodded. "Oh, I would. What about you? You’re so stubborn. Or should I say, a knight’s heart is hard to win?"
"Hard to give my heart when I don’t even understand it myself," Noctlisa replied.
