Chapter 25: Beach Outing

The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains as Jason sat on the edge of his bed, scrolling through his phone. His body still felt tired from the previous day’s shopping spree, and although his bank account held over $900,000 plus, it felt much lighter. He glanced at the pile of receipts on his desk and decided against counting them again. Regina was probably sleeping soundly, dreaming about her new purchases, while he had spent half the night worrying about the total expenses. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

With a big yawn and a stretch, Jason muttered to himself, "Ugh. It’s time to get down to business today."

After a shower and a quick breakfast, he went downstairs to find Catherine and Daisy already dressed for the beach. Catherine wore a wide straw hat and large sunglasses, carrying a basket filled with drinks and snacks, and had tied a short, colorful towel around her hips that accentuated her figure. Daisy was meticulously sorting through towels, with such focus that Jason wondered if she was preparing for an adventure rather than a simple outing.

Marinette, as usual, was quietly helping, tying a scarf around her waist while checking the time. She wore casual beach shorts and a crop top.

Regina was the last to appear, bouncing down the stairs with a bright smile and her phone in hand. She wore one of the new outfits Jason had bought her, and the way she walked into the room made it clear she wanted to show off.

"Morning, everyone!" she said cheerfully. "Is the car ready?"

"There’s no car. Did you buy one?" Jason asked, sipping his coffee. "We’re taking a taxi again."

Regina pouted.

"But we have so many bags."

"Then you’ll have to help carry them," he said calmly.

Daisy looked up from her packing with a smile.

"Jason, you’re coming too, right?"

"Looks like I don’t have a choice."

Catherine chuckled softly.

"You could stay behind, but then we might not have much fun without you."

Understanding her meaning, Jason gave her a mock horrified look.

"Alright, I’ll come."

Twenty minutes later, a taxi arrived. After a brief struggle to fit all their bags inside, they finally headed toward the coast. The driver, a woman in her thirties, greeted them politely and started the engine. Regina sat next to Jason in the back seat, showing him random videos on her phone while the others chatted in the front.

Daisy kept turning around from the passenger seat.

"Jason, you packed sunscreen, right?"

He raised an eyebrow.

"Do I look like someone who owns sunscreen, sis?"

"You’re going to regret that later," she warned.

He gave a slight smile.

"That’s a problem for tomorrow."

The journey took almost an hour. Regina kept talking nonstop, switching between stories about school, social media, and her ideas about why Jason never smiled in photos. He responded to her questions with calm patience, which only made her talk more.

When they finally got there, the beach spread out before them, crowded with families, umbrellas, and stalls selling snacks and beach supplies. The others eagerly got out, while Jason reluctantly carried the bags like a porter. Catherine quietly took charge, setting up a shaded area near the center of the sand.

"Jason, help me lay out this mat," she said.

He knelt down to assist her, briefly chatting about some risqué topics, while Daisy and Marinette unpacked the food containers. Meanwhile, Regina had already run off to take pictures with her phone.

"Regina, stay close!" Daisy called.

"I’m just snapping a few photos!" she replied.

Jason stood up and looked around. He could already tell this was going to be a long day. Catherine handed him a drink and motioned to the chair beside her.

"You should relax," she said. "You deserve a break after yesterday’s shopping."

He took the can and sat down.

"That’s one way to put financial stress."

Catherine laughed and put on her sunglasses.

Regina had a fantastic time. You should be proud.

"I feel lighter," he said. "Mostly because my wallet is missing."

Daisy turned to him, shaking her head.

"You’re still complaining about that?"

"Definitely," he answered. "I’m emotionally attached to my money."

Regina came running back, holding her phone up high.

"Jason, take a picture with me!"

He looked at her, half amused and half exhausted.

"Why?"

"Because it’s family day, obviously."

Before he could protest, she pulled him up and dragged him toward the water. Daisy laughed as they walked away. Regina stopped when they reached the shallow water and carefully positioned the phone.

"Smile!" she said.

Jason tried his best, though it looked more like a grimace. Regina took several photos, then checked them and nodded in approval.

"See? You actually look normal for once."

He crossed his arms.

"Pfft."

She ignored him and ran ahead into the water, splashing around joyfully. Jason stayed behind, watching her for a moment.

After a while, he went back to where the others were sitting. Marinette was unpacking sandwiches, Catherine was reading a magazine, and Daisy was adjusting her hat while wearing a bikini that made her look even more attractive than before. He stared at her for a moment, then joined them and accepted a plate of food without complaint. The background was filled with the sounds of people talking and children laughing, but he focused mainly on the relaxed rhythm of the group.

Daisy leaned slightly toward him.

"You’re actually quiet today."

"Well, I’m saving my energy for something I have planned."

Catherine smiled quietly over her magazine, saying nothing, while Marinette chuckled softly.

"She just feels at ease around you. Teenagers need that kind of comfort."

Jason already suspected they thought the "future deed" had something to do with Regina causing him stress, but that wasn’t the case. He simply shrugged and stared out at the sea.

After a while, Regina came back, soaking wet and looking proud. She held up her phone.

"I made a video for my channel. It’s already getting likes."

Jason handed her a towel.

"Congrats on becoming famous before finishing middle school."

She smiled and sat down next to him, unwrapping a sandwich.

"You sound jealous."

"Jealous of unpaid internet work?"

"Of my charm," she replied confidently.

He gave her a sideways look.

"That’s up for debate."

Catherine handed him another drink and smiled.

"You two act more like siblings than uncle and niece."

Jason looked a bit alarmed.

"Don’t say that about me."

Everyone laughed, including Regina, who seemed happy with their reaction. The mood stayed light during lunch. Afterwards, Marinette suggested playing volleyball, which ended up being more chaotic than competitive. Jason only joined because Daisy insisted. Catherine was the referee, though she spent most of the game laughing at their poor coordination.

At one point, Regina accidentally hit the ball right into Jason’s face. Everyone paused for a moment before bursting out laughing. Jason stood there holding the ball, looking unimpressed.

"You did that on purpose," he said.

"It slipped!" she replied, covering her mouth to hide her laughter.

He gently tossed the ball back.

"You’re lucky I’m a forgiving guy."

"You’re lucky I’m faster," she said, then ran off.

He chased her briefly, more out of principle than anger, before giving up halfway. When he returned to the group, Daisy handed him a towel and shook her head.

"You two are impossible."

"Tell her that," he said, pointing at Regina.

Regina grinned.

"You should thank me. That’s probably the most exercise you’ve had all week."

’She’s going to be the end of my sanity one day,’ he thought.

As the afternoon went on, the group relaxed together in the shade. Catherine and Daisy talked quietly while Marinette read a novel. Regina sat cross-legged next to Jason, scrolling through her phone again.

"Hey, Jason," she said without looking up. "There’s a festival near the plaza next week. We should all go."

Jason tilted his head.

"Why do I feel like that’s code for more spending?"

"Because you’re catching on," she replied cheerfully.

He smiled faintly and leaned back in his chair. The day had gone smoother than expected, even with her endless energy. The family seemed content, and for once, he felt oddly comfortable being with them.

’Maybe this isn’t so bad,’ he thought.

As the sun began to set, Catherine stood and started gathering their things.

"Alright, everyone, time to head back before the crowd leaves."

Regina groaned but stood up anyway, carrying a few of the lighter bags. Jason helped fold the mat and carry the rest. Daisy and Marinette cleaned up the food containers, working quietly together.

Suddenly, Daisy remembered something and headed toward the beach rest area, saying she’d forgotten something there. Jason smiled unconsciously and looked up at the sky, then hurried after her.

"Need help, sis?"

"Actually, yes."

’... Hopefully, it’s time.’
