Chapter 128: – My Past –

Caterina walked inside, and immediately stopped on her tracks.

Nikolas was pacing his office, swathed in a blue grayish dress shirt that its sleeves rolled up to his forearm. A few of his buttons were left open, his unknotted tie hanging around his neck. He looked like a stressed man.

Nikolas, who seemed to have noticed her, lifted his head, turning his gaze toward her. The reading glasses he had on seemed to be slipping off his face.

Caterian’s lips curled as she walked over to him. She reached up, fixing the glasses properly back into his face. Then she moved past him, taking a seat on the chair at his desk.

"You wanted to see me, I assume it’s something urgent, huh?"

Nikolas turned, walking over. He set the tablet in his hand on the desk and sat down opposite her. "Why do you say so?"

"Now, now, Niko, I told you once that I knew how to give back your memories, you didn’t want it. You didn’t contact me at all. And now, here you are, calling me over like you’re on a death bed."

He sighed softly. "Fine."

"What is bothering you?"

"I have a question."

"Which is?"

"Do you think there is possibly a way I can be human?"

Caterina’s face fell. "What the... Why would you want to change yourself?"

"Caterina—"

"Is this because of your lover? York told me, and considering she’s still with you, I assume she’s accepted what you are."

But wouldn’t it be better if I was human?" Nikolas asked, staring at her. "I can’t age. We’re ageless. We’re frozen in time. We can’t even die, not unless the sun kills us."

"So, what are you trying to say?"

"She’s human. And I am a vampire."

Caterina furrowed her brows. "Let me understand you better. Your biggest worry is that you’re going to have to watch her die in your arms, is that it?"

"And there’d be nothing I can do."

"But there is something you can do." She shrugged. "Turn her. That way, just like York, just like your sister in law, she becomes a half of what you are. And what does that mean? She’d become ageless too, able to be with you forever. Yes of course, healing like vampires won’t be a thing for her, after all, she isn’t a full blooded one like you, but she’d be able to walk in the sun, because she has human blood still running inside of her. I mean, the solution is right in front of you."

It was a tempting solution. But... He shook his head. "I love her. And yes, just because she may have accepted what I am, does not mean she’d be willing to turn for me."

"Nikolas, Lucian’s wife loved him so much she turned for him because she wanted to be with him forever, why would she say no? She loves you, doesn’t she? Why would she go against the idea of having a life with you that lasts forever."

He couldn’t answer her.

She sighed, "Well, whatever. Loving a human is complicated. And there is still so many years to ponder through this solution, so let it be. You don’t need to become a human, not that there is any way you can do that. She is safe because of what you are. You can’t protect her fully as a human. Doesn’t she need your strength? My goodness."

She rolled her eyes hard at Nikolas who held a complicated look on his face.

"By the way," she started. "Aren’t you too bold to love a woman that isn’t your mate?"

"What is that supposed to mean?" Nikolas questioned, eyeing her.

"Did you zing with her?"

Caterina crossed her legs.

"Did your soul resonate with her all these while you’ve been with her?"

Nikolas hesitated to answer her.

She rolled her eyes hard again. "Don’t lie to me, Nikolas. I’m half a witch and I can make you spit the truth out as easily as reciting the ABC."

"I didn’t intend to."

"So?" She cocked a brow. "Is she your mate?"

"No."

"And you fell in love with a human who isn’t your mate? That’s bold of you, really."

Nikolas scowled hard as his gaze darkened on her. "Meaning?"

"I can already see your future." Caterina clicked her tongue. "So bloody."

"Caterina—"

"You’re not a stupid man, Niko, and you know very well that the mating bond isn’t as kind to us as it is to those wolf uncouth creatures." She almost spat. "So unfair. They can easily reject a man. We, on the other hand, it’s full of extra steps. And unlike them, heaven doesn’t allow us to be with another over our own mate."

Nikolas’s face grew grim.

"You love this human," she continued. "But she’s not your mate. And what does that mean? You two will never really be together, as long as your mate is out there. And I am sorry to give you the bad news, but she is. I can see the flickering lights and things are going to go wrong. It will keep...going wrong."

His heart skipped a beat. He knew what she meant. Choosing another over a heaven given mate...the earth would swallow you whole. Viviana wasn’t his mate and being with her, it was never going to go well, things will go wrong. He fully understood. Still, giving her up was not an option, not even if his own life was on the line.

"How can I break the mate bond?" he inquired.

"Do you know who this mate of yours is?"

"No. But you can tell me what she looks like, right?"

"I only see the flickering light that tells me she’s out there, nothing more. Like I said before, I can help you get your memories back and if you do, you will be able to know who she is. It will make it easier for—" 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

"No!"

"Nikolas."

"I refuse!" He blatantly rejected the idea. "I love Viviana, and I want nothing of my past to interfere. Let that memory stay where it is. This mate, I will find her."
