Chapter 222: Chapter 222: Convergence

Everything was smothered in a dark, acrid fog. Vision was obscured beyond reason, and the swirling, shifting nature of the mist confused the senses of any unfortunate enough to be trapped within it.

Just then, a small speck of light appeared in the darkness, faintly illuminating the gloom. Soon another speck appeared, followed by another, their numbers growing rapidly until the air itself seemed to glitter.

Before anyone knew it, a brilliant starlight erupted, pushing back the shadows and dispelling the oppressive darkness.

Standing at the center of the starlight was a heavily panting Kate. Various minor bruises and cuts covered her body, with one particularly nasty gash weeping blood on her left shoulder. Her left arm hung limp and useless at her side as she held her sword steady with her right.

Just then, she sensed a subtle shift in the air behind her. Her pulse raced as she forced her broken body to throw itself sideways.

Whoosh!

"Urgh!"

She groaned as she hit the ground and rolled, turning just in time to see the goatman gallop through the space she had occupied a heartbeat before. The earth trembled under its massive weight before stilling the moment it vanished back into the encroaching darkness.

"Damn it!" Kate cursed beneath her breath, forcing herself back to her feet.

She had been fighting the goatman for what felt like an eternity, locked in a exhausting stalemate. After their initial clash, she had surprisingly managed to hold her own, even wounding it. But in retaliation, the creature had summoned this damned accursed fog that completely obscured her vision and seemed to swallow all sound. Without sight or hearing to alert her, she could only rely on the subtle shift in the wind from its charges to warn her of danger, leaving her completely unable to mount a counterattack.

’My mana reserves are getting low...’

Kate felt her situation growing grimmer by the second.

Just as her nerves strained to their limit, she sensed something approaching rapidly from above. Recognizing the distinct sound of wings, she didn’t hesitate, gathering the last dregs of her mana in her legs and leaping high into the air.

As she jumped, the fog clung to her heels. Something massive burst from the cloud-like shroud, lunging directly toward her. Kate turned in mid-air just in time to see the Goatman emerge from the abyssal fog, its crimson eyes burning with fury. Its left arm was pulled back, claws extended and ready to strike her down.

Kate saw it coming but lacked the strength to defend.

As the claws descended toward her, she suddenly felt herself being snatched from the side, strong arms embracing her and carrying her away with their momentum. The deadly claws sliced through empty air.

Watching the goatman fall back into the murky darkness covering the forest floor, she finally turned her head to the figure who had caught her.

"Sorry for the delay, Miss Kate."

A gentle smile and soothing green eyes met hers. If it were any other girl, perhaps her heart would have skipped a beat from being princess-carried so effortlessly. But Kate wasn’t just any other girl.

She rolled her eyes as an exhausted sigh escaped her lips. "I thought I gave the order to run, Bramble?"

"Heh, how could I leave a damsel in distress?" Bramble’s gentle smile turned into a charming smirk. Yet all Kate felt was a familiar, mild annoyance.

"Thank you... for the rescue."

"It was my pleasure to serve, Miss Kate."

After flying for a few more moments, Kate spoke again. "What about the rest?"

"We’re heading towards them as we speak. They shouldn’t be far now."

"Mhm." Kate nodded as she pulled up her wristwatch to check the elimination counter.

[Number of Eliminated Students: 48.]

[Number of Remaining Students: 62.]

Kate frowned. Almost half the students had been eliminated.

They were still a long way from the castle, and she couldn’t help but wonder if they would make it. Even if she recovered from her injuries, she would barely be able to put up a fight before running out of mana.

As she was contemplating, a loud crack of thunder snapped her out of her daze. Turning toward the noise, she could vaguely make out the scene of a massive battle taking place in the distant.

Dozens of students were leading a desperate charge against a horde of enemies that seemed to block their way.

Kate’s eyes grew wide with surprise the moment she realized that most of the enemies they were facing off against were at least peak Rank One, with dozen of Rank Two entities swarming them.

’Why are they fighting? Are they crazy?’

Kate began to question the intelligence of the remaining students when another roar of thunder caught her attention.

Her gaze shifted to track the source, spotting someone leading the charge. A figure wreathed in arcs of lightning, zapping across the battlefield as he swiftly dispatched one enemy after another.

"That’s... Bradford?"

Kate’s eyes flashed with recognition as she watched him cut down a Mid-Stage Rank Two creature with a single, decisive swing of his blade.

’Has he awakened?’

She analyzed his abilities, noting the distinct electricity crackling across his body.

’An electric ability, perhaps?’

Bradford, however, was not the only one to catch her eye. On another side of the battlefield was an equally familiar figure.

Allen.

He moved like a silver blur, swapping weapons almost as fast as he dispatched the approaching horde. His stylish, almost theatrical combat style drew the eyes of both enemies and allies alike.

"Kate!"

A familiar, gentle voice cut through the haze of battle. With the distinct sound of fluttering wings, a figure fast approached through the skies, hands already glowing with vibrant healing energy.

"Are you okay?!" Sylph hurriedly asked, her eyes widening slightly at Kate’s battered state. Before Kate could even reply, Sylph had already begun the healing process, her hands hovering over the worst of the wounds.

"Hah, I’ve been worse," Kate replied with a subtle, weary smile. She immediately noticed that Sylph seemed more lively than before and was quietly happy to see it.

Still, she didn’t stay distracted for long. "What’s the current situation?" she asked, her sharp eyes already scanning the chaotic battlefield below.

"Uh-Mr. Bradford started going around gathering the scattered students. He wanted to charge a path through to the castle, but this horde suddenly appeared out of nowhere," Sylph explained in a hurry, her concentration split between speaking and mending torn tissue and bone.

"And it seems like they’re about to wrap it up," Bramble commented from beside them, a confident smirk on his face.

Indeed, as he had said, the battle was quickly drawing to a close. Most of the horde had been wiped out by the combined assault of Bradford and Allen. The remaining few stragglers were being efficiently picked off by other students working in coordinated groups.

After Sylph finished healing Kate, she immediately turned to fly back down and tend to the freshly injured.

Kate rotated her newly mended shoulder, easing out the last vestiges of numbness, before shooting Bramble a pointed glance.

"Hm?" Bramble smiled charmingly but didn’t move an inch.

"Aren’t you going to carry me down?"

"Oh. Haha, my bad."

And like that, both of them descended onto the bloodied battlefield. As soon as they landed, Bramble gently set Kate back on her feet.

By that point, the area had all but been cleared. The few injured students had gathered around Sylph, receiving emergency medical care, while the rest prepped their weapons and their resolve for the final push.

Looking toward the horizon, Kate could see the looming silhouette of the Demon King’s castle, its spires casting a long, oppressive shadow over the entire world.

"Hm?" Kate frowned, her senses prickling. She noticed an anomaly in her surroundings, a subtle wrongness she recognized all too well from her previous ordeal. The area around them was gradually darkening, the light leaching away as if a cloud had passed over the sun.

The ambient noise of the forest grew softer, more muted, until all that could be heard was a single, steady rhythm—a deep, repetitive thump... thump... thump—like the earth itself was being pounded.

The noise was faint at first, a distant tremor felt through the soles of their boots more than heard. But it grew. Louder. Heavier. Closer. It was a dreadful, mounting cadence that seized the attention of every single student, killing all conversation.

Then, just as the pounding sounded terrifyingly, impossibly close, it stopped.

A dead, silent void followed, so abrupt it was disorienting. In that moment of confused stillness, Kate’s blood ran cold. She knew this tactic.

"AMBUSH!" she screamed.

Her warning was a razor slash through the silence. Guards snapped up, weapons were raised—just in time.

"BAAAA!"

The guttural bleat tore from the darkness that had unknowingly surrounded them. From the deepest shadow burst the goatman, the injuries it had sustained from its battle with Kate still livid on its body. Its eyes now glowed with a pure, blood-red fury as it launched itself toward the heart of the student formation.
