Chapter 273: One Kiss and She’s Hooked

"What new information?" Her voice carried a note of wariness. But she didn’t step back. Instead, she tilted her chin up slightly. Met my gaze with that familiar challenging glint.

"Nothing important." I moved into her personal space. Watched her reaction closely. She didn’t retreat. Her breathing quickened. Almost imperceptible. The pulse at her throat visibly accelerated. "You know, we never did finish our conversation."

Her eyebrow arched. A perfect curve of skepticism. "Which part? The part where you were a manipulative asshole, or the part where I called you on it?"

"The part where you said I was worth the risk."

My hand came up to her face. My thumb gently brushed her lower lip where mine had been less than an hour ago. The skin was still slightly swollen. A physical record of our previous encounter. I noticed her pupils dilate slightly as our eyes locked. The black centers expanding to swallow the violet iris like a spreading inkblot.

Was that my new \[Siren’s Gaze\] already taking effect? Or just normal arousal? The line between my power and natural attraction was deliciously blurred.

And honestly? I didn’t care which it was.

"What are you doing?" she asked. Her voice lower than before. A husky edge creeping in around the vowels.

"Conducting another experiment."

I leaned in and kissed her again. This kiss was different from our previous ones. It wasn’t a challenge or a statement. It wasn’t a game of social chess or a performance for some imaginary audience. It was deliberate. Exploratory. Clinical in my intent. Though the execution was anything but. I wasn’t just kissing her. I was tasting her. And more importantly, I was letting her taste me.

The moment my tongue touched hers, I felt her entire body stiffen. A full-body shock. Like she’d been hit with a live wire. Then, like a wave crashing against a seawall, she melted against me. Her hands, which had been resting lightly on my chest, suddenly clutched at my shirt with desperate intensity. Her nails dug into the fabric. Seeking purchase as if she feared being swept away. A small, shocked sound escaped her throat. Half gasp, half moan. Wholly involuntary.

Holy shit.

The trait was working. Really working.

She kissed me back with a ferocity that caught me off guard. Her arms wrapped around my neck. Fingers tangling in my hair. Trying to pull me closer. Deeper. As if she wanted to crawl inside me. She wasn’t just kissing me back. She was devouring me. Consuming me with an intensity that bordered on panic. Her body pressed against mine with no pretense of restraint. Every curve molding to me.

I broke the kiss. Curious to see her reaction. Her eyes were wide. Unfocused. Like someone waking from a vivid dream. Her lips parted. Searching for mine even as I pulled away. A flush had spread across her cheeks. Down her neck. Disappearing beneath the neckline of her dress like a spreading wildfire. Her breathing was ragged. Uneven. Each exhale carrying a slight tremor.

"What...?" she gasped. Her voice barely a whisper. Thick with confusion and need. "What was that?" 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

I could see it in her eyes. Confusion. Wonder. Beneath it all, a new and desperate need. Her fingers still clutched at my shirt. Unwilling or unable to let go. \[Nectar of the Gods\] was already working its magic. One taste, and she was hooked. The System’s description hadn’t exaggerated. If anything, it had understated the effect.

She leaned forward. Trying to recapture my lips. Her movements almost desperate. I placed my hands on her shoulders. Gently but firmly holding her at arm’s length. The physical separation seemed to cause her actual distress. Her expression flickered between yearning and panic.

"Not yet," I said. My voice firm.

Frustration flickered across her face. Followed by confusion. Then anger. Her usual defenses reasserting themselves. "What the hell kind of game are you playing?"

"No game." I allowed my fingers to trail lightly down her arms. Even this casual touch seemed to affect her. Her skin prickling with goosebumps in the wake of my fingertips. "Just proving a point."

"What point?" Her voice had regained some of its usual edge. But it lacked conviction. Her eyes kept dropping to my lips. Then forcibly dragging back up to meet my gaze.

I smirked. My thumb once again brushing her swollen lips. The slight tremor that ran through her at that simple contact was intoxicating. A visible demonstration of my new power. "You said I was a cliché. A one-time fling. A predator who collects people and then discards them."

She swallowed hard. Still struggling to focus. I could almost see the battle raging behind her eyes. Her natural cynicism and self-preservation instincts fighting against the new chemical imperative now encoded in her cells. "And?"

"And you were right about most of it. But you also said I was worth the risk." I met her gaze. Allowed myself to pour charm into the look. Wondering if I could consciously control the \[Siren’s Gaze\] or if it was purely passive. "I meant what I said earlier, Skylar. You’re worth the risk too. And risks like you aren’t meant to be a one-night thing."

Her breath caught. A small hitch in her throat. "What does that mean?" The question carried weight beyond the simple words. I could hear the uncharacteristic vulnerability there. The genuine uncertainty.

I stepped back. Created distance between us. Her hands fell limply to her sides. Fingers curling as if still trying to hold onto something. "It means I have... complications." My mind flashed to Natalia. To Emi. To Soomin. The pieces already on my board. The threads already in my web. "Things I need to sort out. But when I do..."

She opened her mouth to respond. The ferry’s horn blared. Cut her off. The sound vibrated through the metal deck. A mechanical voice announced imminent departure. The words tinny and distorted through ancient speakers.

"We should go inside," I said. Turned toward the door. Kept my voice casual. As if the last few minutes had been nothing special. A deliberate contrast to the intensity of what had just happened.

"Satori." Her voice stopped me. When I looked back, she was still standing by the railing. Her expression a complex mix of emotions I couldn’t fully decipher. The wind had picked up. Whipped her hair around her face like indigo and pink flames. Against the backdrop of the city and the dark water, she looked otherworldly. "This isn’t over."

I smiled. "I’m counting on it."
