"They aren’t getting as much territory now, are they? Why is that..?"

Mom’s genuine confusion as she stared out at the elemental wasteland that was tearing these armies apart almost made me laugh as I launched another chunk of ice into a crowd of soldiers trapped in quicksand, its explosion killing most of them instantly while the others succumbed to the frost a moment later.

"Probably because the overlapping area of effect, long duration spells we have set up all around us are currently cutting these soldiers down far faster and far more aggressively than they are accustomed to." Experience new stories on novelbuddy

"As Anput said, it’s likely due to their inability to react to warfare like this anymore thanks to their prolonged reanimations. The idea of a siege is foreign to them since the only thing they understand now is the chaos of an up close slaughter where everyone is a target."

Listening to both of my lovers quickly provide the very probable causes for these soldiers being incapable of crossing the remaining two dozen or so feet to reach us was rather amusing since that really wasn’t that long of a distance, but...

With the ever approaching tide of bodies came both banes and boons in equal benefits; more bodies meant more danger, but more bodies in a closer and smaller area meant that we only needed to focus on said smaller area to repel their advance, and now that we knew where they were locked to we could stop them from gaining any additional ground.

Overlapping fire tornadoes, stone spikes, frozen sands and so much more just meant that these soldiers were trapped between the impossible chaos behind them and the controlled wall of magic in front of them, resulting in them being crushed by the chaos against our controlled magic.

The key flaw with our plan was our mana consumption, but the moment we got the spells up and running we could streamline our expenditures to be as efficient as we needed, and with the various potions we had we could do this all night.

Which... we did, spending well over eleven hours standing inside of this bulwark watching as these soldiers succumbed to death once more, but the true eternity of death eluded them as they fell atop those red sands, cursed to reanimate once more after the sun set.

As the sun began to creep back over the horizon they weakened exponentially, losing their magic and swinging their weapons around sluggishly until they succumbed to their wounds, and the moment the sun was actually completely over the horizon they were all silent and completely dead, lying on the blood soaked sands of the previous battle and waiting for the next to begin.

"That... isn’t satisfying, but I don’t want to be here longer than I absolutely have to, so let’s rest up and go test that theory. Maybe we’ll get out of here before the week is up..? Or earlier... earlier would be really nice."

We were all in agreement with Mom there, though it was for a few different reasons; I wanted out because of the damn heat, Anput wanted out because she was bored, Leone wanted to leave the needless suffering behind and she wanted to go because being trapped with the three of us probably wasn’t her idea of fun.

There was also the underlying realization that the longer we were here the more she would have to endure witnessing Anput and Leone taking care of the urges that I could not control, and that was a problem since the three of us might just barely be able to overpower her if she snaps... so there was no reason to push this time any longer than it needed to be.

So the sooner we were out of this trial the better for everyone involved, and that was where this little foray back into the bloodied sands came into play; we took a few different bodies that had very distinguishable features and pulled them towards the edge, resting them in a pile that allowed us to test this a few different ways.

The first was just dragging them straight out onto the clean sands, and that resulted in what we had hoped; the body promptly exploded and spread the domain a little further, so we just tried the others for the fun of it.

Rolling them off of one another to see if that would bypass any weird quirks in this curse laid upon them, using just a single body part to test if they would gain it back upon reanimation tonight, and also using magic to blast their bodies out of their dominion and onto the unclaimed sands.

All of those worked, so we got to work as we began to drag as many of them out of this bloody wasteland as possible, spreading their dominion willingly and cutting down the population drastically with just the handful of hours we had before we would need to rest up and prepare for the night.

The optimal strategy we had was cutting off their heads and throwing them out of the claimed land, but the guaranteed strategy was pulling their entire body out to have all of it explode, so we did both in equal measure to ensure progress was made no matter what, and the entire time I wondered if this was just too easy of a solution to be the actual solution...

Only to then wonder if this was just a low ranked trial that was meant to be the perfect introduction to these places, and if it was than why was it so drastically different then the first trial the other group attempted?

Perhaps it was due to these soldiers being locked in a certain place and us having the ability to get out of the sun, use high level magic and have a lot of mana to use; without it this would be a challenge, after all, but that still felt like a flimsy excuse...

Either way, we just needed to see if this was the right answer or not, and to do so we needed to move a whole lot of corpses before the sun fell, which was unsurprisingly quite the task when there are tens of thousands of corpses.

And when you don’t have a whole lot of real food to sustain yourself things start to get a bit nauseating and worrisome, so we were working as quick as we could without wiping ourselves out, so that was definitely... ’fun’, but what else could we do besides push forwards and get this done before we began to rely on mana for our nutrition?
