With urgency, Arthur pushed the black substance back and back, burning every single piece of it without any mercy. The light from the orb worked like holy water, burning all evil and malicious things in its way.

In the darkness of this world, this orb was the only source of bright light Arthur had. It was so beautiful, contradicting every single aspect of the Void as if it were the exact opposite of it. That naturally made Arthur wonder if the darkness of this world was truly the exact opposite of the Divine Shard and the outer world.

'This place truly feels like it is the evil side of the tower, while the rest of the tower is the one graced by the Divine Shard. So much for being graced…' Arthur exhaled a small breath, just shaking his head.

"Hmm?" At that moment, Arthur finally saw a full glimpse of the man's body, and his face immediately darkened again. His eyes closed for a moment as he felt an immense feeling of disgust fill his mind.

Still, he didn't stop killing the black substance until it was all eradicated. The steam coming from the burning matter disappeared, and what was left of it was nothing but the stains it left on the ground.

"Dammit…" He cursed as he shakingly pulled his hand away.

The corpse was completely skinless from head to toe as if the skin had been peeled off cleanly. He could see the muscles and even the bones. No blood was seeping out of the body as if it was sucked dry. It had no eyeballs, and its lips and nose were all devoured.

"I'm sorry… I'm really sorry…" Arthur put the shard away as he looked down.

At that moment, the man's family seemingly broke free and rushed to their loved one, surrounding him as they started crying and screaming loudly. Their gutteral wails filled Arthur's heart with even more guilt.

"I'm really sorry…" He muttered as he stepped up and moved away to give them some space. He couldn't stand there and witness that sight.

Meanwhile, Germa and the others stood there, a mix of shock and sadness clear on their faces. They had just lost another one of them just like that, without any warning. It didn't feel real, and yet it was the case.

Just like that, this group of hundreds of people had lost one soul, and the journey was still long.

Arthur walked away from the group, only noticed by Germa. "Where are you going, sir?"

"I need a moment. Give them some space to mourn their death, Germa." Arthur replied without looking back before he continued walking away till he was considerably far away from the group.

There, he stopped and looked up with a dazed expression. He was trying to accept the reality of his situation.

"Could I really have done anything to save that man?" He asked himself in a low tone. "If I figured out that the stone can actually burn that substance quick enough… I could've perhaps saved his life."

The more he talked to himself, the more frustrated he felt that he hadn't figured out this solution quickly enough. All he could say was 'If I did' or 'If I could' and yet he had failed. Now, all he had was the regret that comes with mistakes.

Sucking in a deep breath, Arthur yelled loudly. All his frustration and anger came out in the loudest scream he could muster. He knew that this could possibly attract other monsters, but at that moment, the boy knew that if he didn't find a way to channel that anger, he would explode. Then, he ruffled his hair violently.

Eventually, he stopped screaming and took in a deep breath as he stared down. His eyes were wide open, but they weren't looking. For a moment there, Arthur lost his mind completely. But, his eventually regained clarity.

"Fuuuh, ok, I feel better now. That felt really good." He muttered. "I need to calm down. There are still many people relying on me, and I can't let more die under my supervision. I need to focus on trying to keep as many alive as possible."

The mission was far from over, and Arthur was aware of that. This loss had hit him hard, but he didn't want to let it be the reason for his demise. He had to carry on and move forward.

'I have promised to do everything I can to save them, and I have no intention of breaking that promise.'

The situation wasn't all too horrible when he looked at it from a wider perspective. After all, they only had one casualty this entire time, and the rest are fine. He also now had an idea of how to combat whatever this black substance was.

So, in essence, he was now in a considerably good position and all he had to do was to continue moving the group toward their target.

"I'm still far from a disaster. I just need to stay focused." Telling himself that, Arthur finally calmed down completely and turned around to the group to walk back.

The situation there was as he expected. Everyone looked as if they had just witnessed the horror of death head-on. Their expression were hollow, and their tears rolled down their cheeks.

Everyone, without any exception, was mourning the death of this man and it made Arthur stop to watch the scene with a surprised look. The way they all cared about his death as if it was someone blood related to them hit Arthur hard.

Till that point, Arthur didn't realize how strong the bond these people shared was. They were all born into the same dark world, unable to see, and had to survive from when they were young. The bonds created from such hardships were far stronger than even blood.

They weren't merely companions or friends, they were survivors who faced death countless times for the same shared goal.

Their bond was the strongest thing in the world… A bond of ambition.
