Chapter 55: Recognition

**[EAST DISTRICT ARENA – QUARTERFINALS]**

**"BEGIN!"**

Lyssa didn’t charge immediately.

Instead, she circled Alex slowly—spear and shield in position, eyes sharp, studying every detail.

The Griffin did the same—circling above, golden wings catching the light, tracking each movement with predatory focus.

Alex kept his guard up and waited.

*First move always tells you a lot about your opponent.*

Then Lyssa attacked—not a wild throw, but a controlled thrust, testing his defenses.

Alex blocked with his sword and deflected.

She pulled the spear back immediately, shield rising, already anticipating a counter.

*Smart. Disciplined.*

He countered anyway—a quick strike she blocked without effort.

But that wasn’t the point. It was about *measuring*.

Her speed. Her reflexes. Her experience.

And what he found made him smile beneath his hood.

She was good.

*Really* good.

For the first time since he’d summoned Grim—for the first time since he’d gotten the System—Alex was facing an opponent who actually *excited* him.

Not necessarily because she was stronger.

But because she *made him actually fight.*

---

**[SYSTEM – ACTIVATION]**

Out of nowhere, after months of relative silence, the System came to life.

> **[BATTLE INITIATED!]**

>

> **[OPPONENT DETECTED:]**

> Lyssa Stormwind – Level 43

> Class: Guardian Lancer

> HP: 4,200/4,200

> Known Skills: [Shield Bash], [Piercing Strike], [Guardian’s Resolve]

>

> **[COMPANION DETECTED:]**

> Griffin – Level 45

> HP: 5,500/5,500

> Skills: [Dive Attack], [Wing Buffet], [Screech]

>

> **[TACTICAL RECOMMENDATION: High opponent coordination. Separate them.]**

Alex blinked. The System had been quiet for weeks—only surfacing for basic level updates or soul notifications.

But now...

It was *engaged.*

As if it recognized that *this* was a real battle.

---

**[THE BATTLE INTENSIFIES]**

The Griffin dove from above—**[Dive Attack]**—claws outstretched.

Grim (1.5m form) intercepted, scythe rising to block.

*CLANG.*

The impact sent Grim sliding back several meters.

> **[Grim HP: 1,800 → 1,650/1,800]**

"Strong!" Grim sounded... excited? "Finally!"

The Griffin screeched and wheeled around for another pass.

Meanwhile, Lyssa was pressing hard—thrust after thrust, each one precise, each one forcing Alex back a step.

Alex blocked. Deflected. Countered when he had the opening.

But she was *fast.* Every counter met by her shield.

"Nice footwork!" Lyssa called out mid-exchange. "But I can tell you’re holding back!"

*Holding back?*

Alex realized she was right. He’d been fighting reactively—defending, responding.

Not actually *attacking.*

Because part of him was still worried about revealing too much.

But watching Lyssa—seeing her eyes light up with the thrill of real combat—

Something shifted in Alex.

*Screw it.*

This was *fun.*

For the first time in months, he could fight without worrying about life or death. No Fragments. No Temple. No one hunting him.

Just... *pure combat.*

He smiled—a real smile, wild and excited.

"You want to see what I can actually do?"

He shifted his stance—from defensive to offensive.

And attacked.

---

**[SYSTEM – UPDATE]**

> **[MINDSET SHIFT DETECTED!]**

> [User entering "Battle Flow State"]

> [All physical stats temporarily increased by 5%]

>

> **[Alex Carter – Combat Adjustments:]**

> Strength: 87 → 115

> Agility: 92 → 123

> Endurance: 78 → 100

It wasn’t a massive buff. But it was *noticeable.*

And Alex *felt* it—his body moving faster, his strikes hitting harder.

*This* was what he’d been missing.

The thrill of pushing himself against someone who could actually push back.

---

Alex struck—Lyssa blocked.

She countered—Alex deflected, spun, slashed toward her side—

She pivoted her shield and caught it just in time.

"Better!" Lyssa actually laughed—*mid-fight.* "Much better!"

Her attacks accelerated. The spear cut through the air, each thrust faster than the last.

Alex met every one—sword blocking, deflecting, countering.

The rhythm climbed.

Faster.

*Faster.*

Until it became a blur of motion—steel crashing against steel, sparks flying between them.

The crowd was roaring now.

*This* was what they’d come to see.

---

Above them, Grim and the Griffin were equally matched.

The Griffin was stronger. Faster.

But Grim was more precise. More tactical.

Griffin’s **[Dive Attack]**—Grim sidestepped and countered with **[Shadow Scythe]**.

> **[Griffin HP: 5,500 → 5,100/5,500]**

The Griffin screeched in frustration and launched a **[Wing Buffet]**—a burst of wind that sent Grim skidding backward.

Grim steadied himself, scythe spinning.

"Bird! Big! Fight! Good!"

He almost sounded... *happy.*

Like Alex, Grim had been bored with weaker opponents.

*Finally.* Finally, a real challenge.

---

Five minutes into the fight.

Both sides sweating, breathing hard—but neither giving an inch.

Then Lyssa changed her approach.

**[Guardian’s Resolve – Activated]**

Her shield blazed gold—a massive defensive buff.

> **[Lyssa’s Defense increased by 40% for 30 seconds]**

She charged, shield leading—**[Shield Bash].**

Alex couldn’t dodge in time. Too close.

*BAM.*

Direct hit. He was launched backward.

> **[Alex HP: 935 → 780/935]**

He hit the ground hard, rolled, and was back on his feet in an instant.

The Griffin seized the opening—diving toward Alex while he was still recovering—

Grim intercepted.

His form *exploded* into Awakening—two and a half meters of armored terror.

> **[AWAKENING FORM ACTIVATED]**

> **[Grim – Temporary Stats:]**

> HP: 1,650 → 2,400/2,400

> Strength: 120

> Agility: 95

> Duration: 5 minutes

A massive scythe arc cut toward the Griffin.

The Griffin blocked with its claws—but the impact sent it *crashing* into the arena floor.

> **[Griffin HP: 5,100 → 4,200/5,500]**

The crowd gasped.

"What—?" Lyssa stared at Grim—the small skeleton now a towering armored war machine.

Alex used her shock. He charged, driving toward her exposed side—

She blocked just in time, but was pushed back.

"Interesting companion!" Lyssa shouted. "Size-shifting! Never seen that before!"

"He’s special," Alex replied.

They exchanged more blows—but the momentum had shifted.

With Grim in Awakening form, they had the advantage.

---

Lyssa noticed something.

Mid-exchange, she studied Grim more closely.

The way he moved. The way he fought.

Tactical. Precise. Almost like...

Her eyes widened.

"Wait."

She stepped back, lowering her spear slightly.

"That fighting style. That skeleton."

She looked at Alex.

"Size-shifting. A scythe. Red light in his eyes."

A pause.

"I only know one Summoner with a skeleton companion like that."

*Shit.*

Alex tensed, already preparing to surrender on the spot—

"You’re Alex Carter, aren’t you?"

The crowd was still roaring—too loud for anyone to overhear.

But Lyssa had said it clearly enough for him to hear.

Alex considered lying.

But she already knew.

"Are you going to tell anyone?"

Lyssa studied him. Then smiled—not cruel. Genuine.

"Why would I do that? Your secret’s safe with me."

"Why?"

"Because," she raised her spear upright—the universal sign of yielding, "anyone fighting out of pure love for battle instead of glory deserves respect."

She nodded toward Grim.

"And that little one... he’s legendary. Seeing him fight in person is an honor."

She called her Griffin, who flew back to her side—battered, but clearly respecting Grim.

"Besides," she added, lowering her voice, "the Temple is corrupt. Everyone knows it. If you’re running from them, you probably had good reason."

She raised her voice for the referee.

**"I Forfeit!"**

The crowd erupted—confusion and disappointment mixed together.

**"WINNER: NIGHT!"**

The referee looked just as lost. The fight had been *intense,* and Lyssa wasn’t badly hurt.

But a forfeit was a forfeit.

---

As they left the arena, Lyssa walked up beside Alex.

She removed her helmet, smiling.

"Good fight, Champion."

"You didn’t have to forfeit," Alex said. "It was a close match."

"I know. But..." She glanced around, checking no one was too close. "I didn’t want to risk your companion revealing too much. Five more minutes in Awakening form and people would’ve started asking the wrong questions."

She was right.

Grim had already shrunk back to his 80cm form, curled up on Alex’s shoulder.

"Good. Fight. Griffin. Strong."

The Griffin—back to normal size, perched beside Lyssa—dipped its head in acknowledgment.

"Your secret’s safe," Lyssa repeated. "But be careful. The Semifinals are going to be against even stronger competitors. If you use too much power, someone else might recognize you."

"I know. Thank you."

She smiled. "Good luck. And hey—if you ever need an ally in Coral Harbor, look me up. Lyssa Stormwind. Gold-rank Adventurer. Guild District."

With that, she left with her Griffin.

Alex stood there, processing.

His cover had been partially blown.

But by someone who respected his privacy.

He could live with that.

---

Alex blinked at the notifications.

He’d leveled up. First time in weeks.

And a new skill—**[Battle Flow].**

*That* explained the rush he’d felt during the fight with Lyssa.

That moment when everything had clicked—when he’d stopped overthinking and just *fought.*

The System had seen it. Rewarded it.

"Master. Happy?" Grim asked.

"Yeah," Alex said honestly. "That was... that was a good fight. First time in a long time I felt truly *alive* in combat."

"Because. Was. Real. Fight. Not. Life. Or. Death. Just... fun."

"Exactly."

Grim nestled closer.

"I. Also. Enjoyed. Griffin. Strong. Made. Work. For. Victory."

Alex smiled.

Maybe this tournament was exactly what they’d needed.

Not glory. Not big rewards.

Just... a reminder of why they’d become adventurers in the first place.

For the *thrill* of it.

---

Raven and Emily watched as Alex made his way back to the waiting area.

"Did you see that?" Raven murmured. "Grim’s Awakening form. Even if only for a minute."

"I did," Emily agreed. "Do you think anyone noticed?"

"That fighter—Lyssa—definitely noticed. You saw how she looked at him afterward."

"And?"

Raven watched as Lyssa and Alex talked just outside the arena.

"And... apparently she’s fine with it. Look—she’s smiling. Being friendly."

Emily exhaled in relief.

"Good. That’s... good."

"For now," Raven said. "But the Semifinals are tomorrow. Against that Summoner—Dorian. Three companions, perfect control. Alex is going to have to use more power."

"How much more?" 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

"Enough to risk more recognition." Raven frowned. "Maybe... maybe he should withdraw. Second place at the Quarterfinals is still respectable."

"Are you going to suggest that to him?"

"Tonight. We’ll see what he says."

---

**[THAT NIGHT – APARTMENT]**

"Withdraw?" Alex turned Raven’s suggestion over in his mind. "After making it to the Semifinals?"

"It’s safer," she argued. "Lyssa recognized you because of Grim. Others could too. Is it worth the risk?"

Alex looked at Grim, who met his gaze with a steady red glow.

"Master. Decide. I. Support."

"It’s not just about the risk," Alex said slowly. "It’s just... during that fight with Lyssa, I felt something I haven’t felt in months."

"What?" Emily asked.

"*Joy.* Pure joy in combat. No fear. No one hunting me. Just... fighting because I *wanted* to."

He looked at both of them.

"I know it’s risky. But... I want to keep going. At least through the Semifinals. See how far I can get."

Raven and Emily exchanged a look.

Finally, Raven sighed.

"Fine. But if at any point it looks too dangerous, you withdraw. Immediately. Agreed?"

"Agreed."

"And," Emily added, "I’m going to prepare a contingency plan. Just in case. Routes out of the city, supplies packed, ready to move in thirty minutes if we need to."

"That sounds... excessive," Alex said.

"It’s *prudent,*" Emily corrected. "Better to have a plan and not need it."

Alex nodded. "Thank you. Both of you. For backing me even when it’s a stupid idea."

Raven smiled. "That’s what family does."

"Family," Grim echoed. "Together. Always."
