My Stepmother Is an Ex-Demon Queen-Chapter 54 - 55 – Into the Abyss
Recap of the Previous Chapter
The rooftop had become a battlefield of fire, steel, and collapsing stone. Lilith and Kazuki fought desperately against the relentless hunter, whose every strike seemed designed to expose the cracks in their bond. The rooftop fractured beneath their feet, forcing leaps across crumbling tiles and desperate exchanges of steel in the moonlight. With the ex-husband watching from the shadows, delighting in the chaos, Lilith’s fire burned brighter, but the hunter pressed her with words that cut deeper than his blade—reminders of old vows, of a past she had buried, and of the predator’s patience to claim her once more.
When the rooftop finally gave way completely, the world tilted into an abyss of fire, shadow, and endless night. Lilith and Kazuki leapt together, refusing to let go. The hunter followed like a phantom, smiling as the void swallowed them whole.
Main Story
The fall began with silence.
For a heartbeat, gravity stole all sound, and Lilith felt weightless. The ruined rooftop crumbled above them in a rain of shattered stone, sparks trailing like meteors. Below was only darkness—the yawning abyss between towers, the endless drop that promised to erase everything in one brutal impact.
Then sound returned, all at once. Wind screamed past her ears, tearing at her clothes and hair. Her fire guttered, fought against the rushing air, then flared brighter as she willed it into being. Flames spiraled around her body, giving her enough balance to twist midair.
"Lilith!" Kazuki’s voice cut through the chaos. He was just below her, spinning through the void with his blade out, trying to stabilize himself. His eyes locked with hers—full of raw determination, not fear. Even as they plummeted, he was searching for a way to fight.
And then came the hunter.
He descended like a hawk, body streamlined, cloak billowing like black wings. His blade glinted silver in the moonlight, pointed straight at Kazuki.
Lilith’s heart clenched. No. He won’t take him.
She thrust her hand outward. Flames erupted into the shape of a wing, slowing her fall just enough to lunge sideways, intercepting the hunter’s blade. Sparks exploded as steel met flame-forged steel, the shockwave rattling the air around them.
The hunter’s grin widened. "Yes... fight even as you fall. That’s the Lilith I remember."
"Shut up!" Lilith spat, twisting her blade against his. The impact spun them apart, sending her tumbling. The world flipped and twisted—sky, ground, shadows, fire, all blurring into chaos. She fought to stabilize her spin, conjuring another burst of flame beneath her feet to push herself upright.
Kazuki dove toward her, reaching out, but the hunter blocked him midair, blade flashing with predatory precision. The two collided, sparks raining like stars across the void.
Lilith’s stomach lurched. Her fire burned hotter, but her chest tightened with every passing second. We’re still falling. No matter how hard we fight, the ground is waiting.
The hunter, however, fought as if the fall were irrelevant. Every strike was measured, calm, calculated. His eyes gleamed with hunger as his blade forced Kazuki back inch by inch. "You’re fast," he said almost conversationally. "But speed without instinct is useless."
Kazuki gritted his teeth, parrying blow after blow, his arms straining against the force. "I don’t need instinct. I have her."
That declaration ignited Lilith’s fury and her fire. She dove toward them, blade burning white-hot. "And you’ll never have me again!"
The hunter twisted midair, parrying her strike while simultaneously kicking Kazuki away. Kazuki spun off, barely regaining balance, but his eyes never left Lilith.
The three of them plummeted together, locked in a dance of death suspended over endless void. Fire whirled, steel sang, and the abyss yawned wider beneath them.
From somewhere in the shadows above, the ex-husband’s laughter drifted, carried on the wind. "Yes... bleed for me, burn for me. The abyss is such a perfect stage for vows to shatter."
Lilith ignored him, focusing on survival. She spun, conjured a massive plume of fire beneath her, using the force to propel herself upward just enough to clash with the hunter again. Their blades sparked, their bodies twisting around each other in midair.
"You’ve grown stronger," the hunter admitted, voice low, intimate. "But strength isn’t what I seek from you." His eyes locked on hers. "It’s surrender."
Lilith snarled, fire bursting around her like a star. "You’ll get only ashes."
Their clash tore the air apart. The shockwave rattled Kazuki, who steadied himself and surged forward again, blade flashing. He slashed across the hunter’s side—finally landing a strike. Blood sprayed into the air, carried by the wind.
For the first time, the hunter’s expression faltered.
Kazuki’s breath came ragged, but his voice rang with defiance. "You’re not the only one who can fight for her."
Lilith’s chest tightened at his words. Something hot and dangerous stirred within her—not just fire, but the raw ache of connection. For a heartbeat, she almost faltered.
The hunter saw it. His smile returned, sharper. "Ah. There it is. The weakness I’ve been waiting for."
He lunged—not at Lilith, but at Kazuki.
Lilith screamed, flames bursting so violently they cracked the air itself. She hurled herself between them, parrying the hunter’s blade just before it could pierce Kazuki’s chest. Sparks blinded her vision, the force numbing her arms.
The hunter leaned close, voice a whisper against her ear. "How many more times will you risk everything for him, Lilith? How many more drops of blood, how many more breaths, before you realize... it’s me you belong to?"
Her rage boiled over. She screamed, unleashing a torrent of fire that engulfed both of them, searing the air, burning so hot it illuminated the entire abyss. For a moment, even gravity seemed to falter, the sheer heat suspending them midair.
But when the flames cleared, the hunter was still there, smoldering but unbroken, his grin undiminished.
Kazuki grabbed Lilith’s wrist, grounding her again. "Don’t listen to him. We fight, we survive. Together."
The word together echoed in her chest like a vow.
The hunter’s eyes narrowed. "Then fall together."
He raised his blade—and the last fragments of rooftop finally gave way above. Massive slabs of stone hurtled down toward them like meteors.
Lilith’s eyes widened. They weren’t just fighting anymore. They were running out of time.
We’ll hit the ground in seconds.
She spread her arms wide, fire bursting from her back in a desperate imitation of wings. The flames caught the rushing air, slowing her descent just enough. She grabbed Kazuki, pulling him against her, sharing her fire to steady him.
The hunter cut through the falling debris effortlessly, descending alongside them, eyes locked on Lilith as though the rest of the world didn’t exist.
"You can’t fly forever," he said, voice calm, deadly.
Lilith bared her teeth, fire raging brighter, hotter, fiercer than ever. "Then watch me burn."
And with that, she dove straight into the storm of falling stone, dragging Kazuki with her, flames blazing a path through destruction, refusing to let the abyss claim them.
Above, in the ruins of the rooftop, the ex-husband’s shadow leaned into the moonlight, eyes glinting with cruel delight. "Fall, burn, fly—it doesn’t matter. In the end, she always comes back to me."
The abyss roared, fire and shadow colliding as the descent reached its climax.
