My Stepmother Is an Ex-Demon Queen-Chapter 62 - 63 – Crown of Ash
Recap
Lilith reclaimed her crown of fire, the chains of her blood oath flaring in defiance against the hunter and her ex-husband. Kazuki’s loyalty and bloodied blade held her steady, but both men pressed relentlessly—one with obsession, the other with calculated possession. The rooftop shattered beneath the intensity of their clash. Lilith’s power had returned, but the price of claiming it was only just beginning to reveal itself.
Main Story
The night trembled under the weight of Lilith’s power.
Her flames were no longer wild, uncontrolled surges—they formed a crown above her head, radiant and sharp as forged steel, illuminating the broken rooftop in a molten aura. Each flicker of light cast shadows that danced like soldiers in her honor, but the hunter and the ex-husband were undeterred.
The hunter’s chains whipped through the fire, snapping like living serpents. Every strike he made was precise, deliberate, a predator calculating the moment to strike when Lilith faltered.
"You wield fire," he murmured, voice low and sharp. "But you cannot burn chains that live in your blood."
Lilith’s fists clenched. Flames flared around her wrists, biting into the chains like twin dragons of molten light. Sparks rained, tile fragments scattered, and the wind howled through the ruin, carrying the scent of scorched stone and iron.
Kazuki staggered to his feet, gripping his sword so tightly the joints in his hands whitened. "We’ll see about that," he growled. He lunged at the hunter, blade slashing through air and fire. Sparks flew as steel collided with steel and chains rattled in protest.
The hunter smiled, almost indulgently. "Persistent. Foolish. Endearing." His chains coiled around Kazuki’s legs, pulling him down, but Lilith’s fire surged again, severing the coils midair.
Then came the ex-husband.
From the far edge of the rooftop, he stepped forward, shadow spilling from him like ink. His presence was suffocating, heavy as the chains of a kingdom long dead. Lilith’s fire flared instinctively, but even her molten crown could not pierce the suffocating darkness he exuded.
"Ah," he whispered, voice silk over steel. "So beautiful when you fight. So fiery. Yet... the crown looks fragile in your hands. Fragile as a human heart."
Lilith’s body trembled under his gaze. Something primal stirred in her chest—a mixture of fear, rage, and something she had tried to bury long ago.
Kazuki roared, rushing forward, but the ex-husband’s hand waved almost lazily. Shadows erupted like black smoke, coiling around Kazuki, lifting him, twisting him midair. Flames bit at the shadows, but the inky tendrils held fast, dragging him toward the edge of the rooftop.
"No!" Lilith screamed, fire erupting in a spiral around the boy she refused to lose. The crown above her head blazed, burning the shadows, but still they held.
The hunter pressed closer, chains snapping. "She belongs to fire," he hissed, eyes on Lilith, "but I belong to her."
Lilith’s heart seized. She swung her arms, launching flames like crescent moons, searing the chains. Kazuki dropped to the rooftop with a grunt, coughing, his body bruised and bleeding, but alive. He rose shakily, staring at her, words raw: "I’ll always fight for you, Lilith."
Her chest heaved. Flames roared, but her body faltered under the emotional weight—the chains of the hunter, the shadows of her ex-husband, Kazuki’s desperate devotion.
The ex-husband chuckled, stepping closer. "Fire cannot hold a crown that is chained by love and fear both. Watch closely, Lilith. Watch how easily your throne can crumble."
Lilith’s eyes flared brighter than any star, her aura burning higher. Flames erupted like a phoenix reborn, scattering chains, snapping shadows, and forcing the ex-husband backward. Yet, she felt the cost—the pull in her chest, the strain of keeping her crown alight, the ache of knowing the boy at her side was vulnerable to both predator and past.
The rooftop quaked beneath the fury. Tiles shattered, sending sparks into the night sky. Rain hissed against fire, steam curling upward like ghostly soldiers.
Kazuki reached for her, hands trembling, blood dripping, and whispered: "The crown is yours. But you don’t have to bear it alone."
Her fire surged at his words, and for a moment, the hunter faltered, the ex-husband’s shadows recoiled, and the night seemed to pause in reverence. Lilith’s gaze met Kazuki’s. In that heartbeat, she realized the truth: power alone was meaningless without someone to anchor her, without someone to fight beside her.
The hunter hissed, stepping closer, chains snapping like vipers, eyes burning with obsession. "You think he can protect you forever? You are mine. I have waited centuries for this."
The ex-husband’s shadows followed suit, a creeping tide of black darkness seeking to swallow the light. "And I will always claim what was mine," he added, voice like silk and steel.
Lilith’s crown of fire flared violently, scorching both predator and shadow alike. She stepped forward, flames lancing like spears, and roared: "Enough!"
The hunter and ex-husband recoiled, but only slightly. They were patient, waiting for the fire to fade, waiting for her to tire.
Kazuki’s sword gleamed in the molten light. He moved to her side, battered but unbroken. "We’re not done yet. Not tonight. Not ever."
Lilith’s heart thudded, blood and fire coursing in tandem. The crown above her head was heavy, yes—but it was hers. And with Kazuki at her side, it was not a symbol of chains... but of defiance.
The night trembled once more, not with fear—but with anticipation.
