My Stepmother Is an Ex-Demon Queen-Chapter 65 - 66: Inferno’s Vow
Recap – Chapter 65: Ashes and Chains
On the burning rooftop, Lilith broke free of her chains, shattering her fire crown in an eruption that turned night into day. The hunter’s obsession, the ex-husband’s cruel claim, and Kazuki’s unwavering devotion all clashed in a crucible of fire and shadow. Lilith screamed her defiance: no more crowns, no more chains. But the hunter refused to relent, the ex-husband only smiled darker, and Kazuki—bloodied but unbroken—threw himself back into the storm. The battle shifted from possession to survival, as the rooftop cracked beneath the weight of their desires.
The rooftop was unraveling. Every tile hissed underfoot, every wooden beam groaned like a dying animal, threatening to collapse into the flames consuming the mansion below. The night itself seemed torn open, the sky above a canvas of smoke and fire.
Lilith stood at the heart of it, her hair a wild storm of black and crimson, strands catching sparks that refused to burn her. The crown she had once borne was gone—shattered, scattered to ash. In its absence, her aura no longer bent toward domination or rulership. It spilled raw and untamed, fire that belonged to no master.
Kazuki staggered to her side, a crimson streak running from his forehead down his cheek. His sword was ruined, little more than a jagged shard clutched in a trembling fist. Yet his stance was unbroken—protective, defiant.
Across from them, two shadows rose.
The hunter, muscles corded, chains alive with a hiss like vipers waiting to strike.
And the ex-husband, elegant and monstrous, his every breath dripping with poisonous confidence.
It was no longer a duel. It was a crucible.
The Predator’s Claim
The hunter’s voice was a growl, guttural and feral, vibrating through the air as though the chains themselves were speaking.
"You were never a queen, Lilith. You were my prey. The way your blood raced when you ran, the way your lips parted when I caught you—tell me you don’t remember."
The words were fire and venom, twisting inside her chest. Memories flickered unbidden—dark forests under a red moon, her own heartbeat pounding as chains closed around her waist, her body shivering not with fear but with dangerous exhilaration.
Her throat tightened. For one fragile second, she almost faltered.
Kazuki’s broken voice cut through. "She’s not your prey." He raised the ruined sword. His knuckles bled from gripping it too tightly. "Not anymore."
The hunter laughed, low and cruel. "You think you can protect her with that scrap of metal? Boy, you don’t understand. Protection isn’t what she craves. She craves the chase. The catch. Me."
Chains snapped forward, splitting in midair into barbed tongues.
Lilith raised her palms. Firewalls surged, molten and searing. The chains slammed against them, hissing, splitting the air with sparks. The pressure bent her knees.
The hunter’s smirk deepened. "There it is. That struggle. That tension. You can’t deny it."
The Ex-Husband’s Poison
Then the ex-husband moved, stepping lightly across crumbling tiles as though the inferno itself bowed beneath his feet. Shadows clung to him like lovers, writhing around his shoulders and arms. His voice dripped with a calm cruelty that made the hunter’s ferocity seem almost pure by comparison.
"Don’t be fooled, Lilith. He hunts you because he needs to. I... shaped you because I could. Every scar on your soul, every crown you wore, every flame you raised—mine. You are not free. You are the sum of every vow you swore to me, every night you burned for me. Why pretend otherwise?"
Lilith’s body swayed. Her flames trembled. His words struck deeper than chains ever could.
Kazuki stepped between them, spreading his arms as if his battered frame could shield her from words themselves. His voice shook but did not break.
"She isn’t yours. She isn’t his. She chooses."
The ex-husband tilted his head, a smile playing over his lips. "And what has she chosen, boy? To be with you? A fragile mortal with nothing but a broken blade?"
He leaned forward, whispering into the fire like a serpent’s hiss. "Lilith, when the flames gutter out, when his flesh rots to dust, who will remain? Not him. Me. Only me."
Kazuki’s Stand
Something in Kazuki snapped. He gritted his teeth, and with a roar he surged forward. The broken sword in his hand burned—not with steel, but with ember. His blood dripping onto the jagged edge had ignited it, fusing steel and soul into a fragile, blazing weapon.
He met the hunter’s chain head-on, sparks exploding like meteors. The blade shattered further, shards embedding in his palm, but he didn’t release it. He thrust forward with the hilt itself, ramming it into the hunter’s arm.
The predator staggered, chains recoiling. For the first time, his grin faltered.
Lilith’s flames surged with his defiance, igniting brighter, hotter. She screamed, pouring raw fire into the air, burning the weakened chains to molten slag.
The rooftop shook violently. A massive beam cracked, then gave way, tumbling into the blaze below. The night roared with collapse.
Inferno’s Vow
Lilith clutched her chest, her fire suddenly flickering, dark shadows veining through it like poisoned ink. She fell to one knee.
Kazuki caught her, his burned hand pressing over her heart. His voice was hoarse, breaking with pain and desperation.
"Lilith—look at me. Don’t let them pull you back. You’re not their prey. You’re not his possession. You’re you. And I’m with you. Always."
Her eyes snapped open, locking on his. His gaze held no chains, no crowns. Only a vow, fragile but absolute.
Her fire reignited, wild and crownless, surging to life in a column of light that split the smoke. She seized Kazuki’s hand, pressed it harder to her heart.
"Then stand with me, Kazuki. Not as prey. Not as master. As my equal."
The inferno exploded around them. Fire and ember twined, fusing into a single storm.
The hunter shielded his face, snarling.
The ex-husband’s smirk cracked, just slightly.
Together, Lilith and Kazuki rose, their fire no longer separate but one. The rooftop collapsed beneath them, but they leapt as one, entwined in flame and vow.
Their voices, united, thundered through the night:
"No chains. No crowns. Only fire—and us."
And the inferno carried them into the abyss.
