My Unrestrained Lives-Chapter 36: Unwelcomed Visitors (2)
"We work at the main palace, and under the order of the head maid, we came to start working here, as your highness are currently in an important growing period, where you need someone to take care of you," the insolent maid added with emphasis, "not to mention, you also need to start your studies."
"You can’t possibly continue playing like you are doing now."
The maid continued her speech on her own, not caring that he hadn’t returned their greeting or even allowed them to speak in the first place.
Most of all not even caring, that he can’t possibly be playing in the library.
She talked about how they were just the beginning, and someone else would come to assess his situation more properly, before setting a schedule for how the prince’s education should go forward.
And how his lessons would constitute the following: History, politics, other subjects a royal should be knowledgeable in, and etiquette.
She talked about all of that... but still didn’t mention magic.
Which, when it came to this kingdom, was actually the most important.
As long as one was competent enough with magic, everything else could be forgiven for royalty.
He wasn’t a noble, who still needed to study a bunch of other things regardless.
’So, they really have ulterior motives.’ While he now confirmed that, Ellis still didn’t care. He just listened nonchalantly, without giving them much thought.
He figured someone might have planned to monitor him, or maybe even try to subtly steer his so-called education, as the maid had put it.
But he really didn’t give a fuck about any of that. He didn’t care what the person behind these two maids was scheming. He just planned to watch the situation for now... and brush them off later. Best case, he could kick them out of his palace altogether.
But that was for later.
For now, he didn’t plan to make any move... so, he didn’t plan to give them any mind.
That is... until the maid said.
"And as Silas is deemed not competent enough, even more so unqualified, so, she will also stop working here, and that makes our presence even more strongly needed."
’What the fuck do you think you are talking about?’
Ellis nearly snapped right there. He almost killed them on the spot when he heard that sentence. For a moment, he was even unable to control his expression.
For the current him, Silas was that important.
He didn’t have anyone else he considered important in this world, only her, after all.
Still, he knew he couldn’t do that.
Being impulsive now, when he still didn’t have the strength to take on everyone in the royal grounds by himself, was nothing but a shortcut to his own death, after all.
And if he was alone in that, after he became five years old, that would be one thing... but now, if he made a move, even Silas would be dragged down with him.
So, he held himself back, came back to his senses quickly, then tried to put on a blank and bewildered expression.
The maid, who was naturally unable to catch onto the subtle changes in his expression, still actually felt the air shift after she said that last sentence. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
She was, strangely, suddenly stuck with fear and stopped talking.
She wondered what was going on, but before she could figure that out, Ellis acted.
He, who now shifted his expression to one of panic... or at least something similar, turned his head to Silas and asked, "You really will leave me?"
He actually also wanted to shed a couple of tears, but that was clearly still a level of acting too hard for him.
The two maids remained unaware of what was truly happening. But Silas... she was not like them. She heard his voice, and within it, she felt something else.
Silas, who felt anger... a chilling anger in her master’s voice instead of the panic he was trying to show, paused, and felt as if a storm of thoughts was rushing inside her head.
She turned her gaze briefly to the two maids, her eyes now not even trying to conceal the hostility they held, before she moved her gaze back to Ellis, with her eyes now just gazing softly at him, filled with immense affection, before she said, "Don’t worry, Your Highness. I w—"
Silas intended to say a few soothing words to calm him down, but interrupting her was the haughty and loud voice of the tall maid who came back to her senses.
"Your Highness, Silas being the maid herself needs to listen to the command of the head maid."
"So unfortunately, she will leave Your Highness... so you need to get your acts right, and not feel sad for someone like her."
’This fucking bitch wants to be killed, right?’
’She feels like her ugly existence can’t remain in this world any longer, so she’s behaving like this, to make me lose control and kill her, right?’
Hearing her insolent tone, how she kept interrupting Silas, and how she was even lecturing him... Ellis, with his mood now beyond unpleasant, thought.
He still didn’t make any move though... since silencing her was still out of the question.
At least for now.
So now, while ignoring her, Ellis couldn’t help but start thinking.
Why are they bothering him like this?
What did he do to garner their attention?
... Or was he thinking in the wrong direction, and it’s the opposite?
Had he been too complacent?
Let down his guard?
This move of taking away the only person who was truly on his side, clearly wasn’t one done with good intentions, after all.
So had he been living too comfortably lately?
Was that why this happened?
... Ellis actually knew the situation around him was far too chaotic.
Especially with the crown prince seemingly already decided... and now it was just waiting to be officially announced.
But he hadn’t made any moves during these almost five years. He had truly just remained in his abandoned palace.
He felt no one had the time or energy to actually give him any attention.
But maybe... maybe, once again, it was the opposite?
Now that the fight was reaching its end between his siblings...
Maybe things really would be different now?
And they wanted to clean away the useless members of the royal family still hanging around them?
Ellis rejected that idea in the end though.
He felt something must have happened... something that made them act like this.
Otherwise, there really was no reason to suddenly give attention to an untalented prince like him, after all.
