Chapter 372: Grul and Dan

After cleansing the brainwashing spell from all the victims at The Pit and killing the imps that were possessing them, I went to the ninth floor to speak with Grul, the only imp who showed no signs of bloodlust.

Dan, the kid he possessed, was also present, as I wanted to ask him how he knew the imp and why he wanted to protect him.

When I got there, Dan was sitting on the floor, eating a hot plate of food, while the imp sat next to him with a nervous expression.

"Alright, let’s talk for a bit..." I said, sitting in front of the two, who raised their gaze slightly apprehensive.

"Listen, Grul. As long as you cooperate with us, I promise that nobody will hurt you." I continued, trying to calm down the trembling imp, who seemingly thought we were still going to execute him.

The imp didn’t respond but nodded, acknowledging that he understood what I was saying.

"Start from the beginning. How do you guys know each other?" I asked.

Grul explained that Baelzor was considered the "Imp Emperor" since he used to be a common one like him but evolved after being chosen by the Demon King, Xalathas.

Once the Demon King sent all his generals to this world, Baelzor used his powers to summon thousands of imps from the demon realm to help his cause.

Even if Grul didn’t want to participate and stay in the demon realm, he had no choice, as Baelzor’s spells allowed him to command every single imp that existed.

After Baelzor forcefully brought Grul and the other imps to this world, they were ordered to scout the north for areas that were rich in resources. However, Grul had no interest in helping with their conquest, so instead of scouting, he just explored the places that looked the prettiest to him.

"Hmm, but I thought that a greater demon could cast the same spell to brainwash somebody..." I muttered, interrupting the imp.

"They weren’t always able to. That’s an ability they gained after serving Baelzor for years..." Grul explained.

During Grul’s exploration of the north, he came across different villages with people living in them, but as soon as he tried to speak with anyone, people would get scared of him and shout for help.

Anytime he wandered into a village, he would get chased down by the warriors protecting it until he found a small settlement where he saw a child crying away from all the houses.

It was Dan, who was trying to hunt a snow rabbit to bring to his adoptive family for dinner. However, his physical prowess hadn’t developed to that point yet, and he ended up falling and hitting his knee.

Grul felt bad for the kid, but he didn’t want to approach him, knowing that the probability of him getting hunted down would increase. Nevertheless, the imp built up his courage and came to Dan to ask him what was wrong.

As soon as Dan spotted Grul, his crying stopped while curiously inspecting the imp, and after the kid muttered his desire to hunt the rabbit, Grul decided to help him out and get it for him.

Grul told me he wasn’t a fighter, but he could still handle a tiny rabbit on his own.

Still, even though he said that, I could tell that Grul was slightly more powerful than the imps we cleansed from the others’ bodies.

Seeing that Dan was the only person who wasn’t afraid of Grul, they became secret friends and would hang out every day on the outskirts of their village.

One day, Grul was forcefully summoned back to Baelzor’s base, which was a frozen cave. When he appeared, he noticed that the thousands of imps that were summoned with him were also present.

Baelzor had received the scout reports from all the imps, and he was ready to move his plan to the next stage, so he called them all to elaborate on their next task.

Grul had omitted to tell Baelzor his findings, wanting to protect his only friend, Dan. However, the demon was aware of the imp’s shenanigans and gave him an ultimatum.

He commanded all of the imps to possess a human—If they failed to do so, they would get executed.

Of course, Grul didn’t want to do that, and he tried to think of a way to get himself out of that situation. Nonetheless, there was another imp that found Dan’s village, and it was already a target for Baelzor’s forces.

When Grul returned to the village to warn Dan, the kid tried telling the adults that they would be attacked by demons, but nobody believed him.

The imp couldn’t show himself to the other people, or he would have simply been hunted down or killed, but his plan of using Dan to warn them of the imminent attack backfired on them.

When the demons arrived at the village a few days later, Grul said goodbye to Dan, thinking that he would get executed for not following Baelzor’s orders.

However, Dan offered himself to be Grul’s vessel, saying that he trusted him and that he also wanted to protect the imp.

That’s when Grul possessed Dan, but instead of keeping the kid’s subconscious unaware of everything, the imp made it so that their minds became one.

Honestly, I thought their story was kind of heartwarming. The two of them were probably feeling alone, and now they were pretty much best friends.

"So, the first batch of imps that he summoned here possessed other people by themselves. But then, how does their new spell work?" I asked.

Greater demons could point their palms at someone and have them possessed by an imp, so I didn’t understand how they were able to do that when imps were already running around.

"That’s when Baelzor evolved and gave the greater demons his powers..." Grul commented.

Basically, their spell would summon the imp inside a person’s body. They weren’t being taken over by an imp who was physically there. Instead, the creatures were literally appearing inside their bodies.
