Chapter 36 - 34: That Moment You Realize You’re the Filler Character in His Story
"Garou's learning ability is incredible. He already understands quite a bit of sealing techniques," Kakashi finally spoke, his voice quiet but filled with genuine astonishment.
He didn't elaborate on just how much of a genius Garou truly was. It was the kind of brilliance that surpassed explanation, something that couldn't be measured with simple rank or training time. And even if he tried to explain it, few would believe him.
It was better to let actions speak louder than words.
"So... Kakashi, how do you suggest we alter the barrier on our side?" Chiruki asked with a furrowed brow, hands clasped behind his back, the sun glinting off his shaved head as the wind stirred his temple robes.
Garou paused, fingers lightly tapping the sealing scroll tucked into his belt. His eyes focused thoughtfully. "I'm not fully familiar with your temple's barrier technique, so I can't offer a perfectly tailored solution. But if I had to suggest something... perhaps you could add a secondary, smaller layer around the statue. And ideally, the core of the technique should be buried beneath the ground, hidden from view."
"Layered?" Chiruki, who had trained in the fundamentals of barrier techniques, especially the Sealed Iron Wall, frowned. He turned over the idea in his head, his brow furrowed deeper.
But then his eyes lit up with realization.
It could actually work.
While it would require some restructuring of the sacred ground, layering another formation around the base wouldn't be as difficult as overhauling the entire Sealed Iron Wall.
And considering the sacred statue's importance, this could significantly enhance its protection.
Garou didn't press the matter. He simply added, "It may not even be necessary to modify the main barrier. The monks of the Fire Temple are formidable. There aren't many shinobi alive who can threaten this place."
"True... but a second barrier would enhance the overall protection," Chiruki admitted. "The Sealed Iron Wall isn't exactly simple to augment, though. Adding even a smaller layer would be quite a task."
Garou offered a calm smile. "You can draw power from the main barrier by incorporating a few auxiliary techniques. That way, the smaller barrier links with the larger one, creating a nested system. That prevents a single strike from collapsing the entire structure."
Kakashi, Tenten, Kasumi, and Sakuraba stood nearby, observing quietly.
This was highly technical talk.
Even most experienced Jonin didn't have the fūinjutsu knowledge to follow this level of discourse.
Chiruki himself began to look visibly overwhelmed.
'Inserting auxiliary techniques? Why does something that complicated sound so casual when he says it?'
"Is it really that simple?" Chiruki asked, clearly doubting but unable to hide his curiosity.
"It's not particularly hard. Whether it's sealing or barrier formations, they may seem chaotic, but every symbol and connection follows a logic. Once you understand that underlying logic, modifying them becomes much easier."
Chiruki's expression turned unreadable.
To him, just understanding a sealing formation's structure was impressive. Few even dared to attempt such feats without years of study.
And yet this boy... this teenager... spoke of it as though it were no more complicated than tying a knot.
'He made this much progress in half a month? That's... that's insane.'
Still, the monk restrained his skepticism. He chose instead to test the waters.
"Would it be possible to see a demonstration of your sealing techniques? If you truly have the skill, I'd like your help enhancing our formation. Payment isn't an issue."
"I've mostly been focused on theory so far," Garou replied thoughtfully. "I haven't created any original sealing techniques yet. Hmm... how about I modify an existing one right now?"
Garou withdrew four sealing tags from his pouch, standard issue ones used for the Binding Formation.
When placed in the four cardinal directions, they created a chakra-based trap meant to immobilize an enemy in the center. It was a common setup for mid-level shinobi.
"The Binding Formation?" Chiruki, recognizing the tags, raised an eyebrow. He couldn't decipher the formula on them, but the configuration was unmistakable.
Garou nodded.
"Garou-kun, are you sure you can alter that?"
Tenten's voice carried a blend of surprise and concern.
Tampering with sealing techniques wasn't something you did lightly.
A mistake could cause misfires, backlash, or worse.
"I've got an idea," Garou replied, pulling out two blank tags from a small scroll pouch.
He sat cross-legged, resting the blank seals on a stone surface. Then he began to draw.
Chiruki leaned in slightly, eyes narrowing as he watched the formation take shape.
There wasn't a single tremble in Garou's hand. His brushstrokes were hair-thin, deliberate.
This wasn't mere imitation. It was born of deep understanding. Even a seasoned monk would need years to achieve such consistency in their linework.
He was astonished.
Garou's brush traced a spiraling arc in the corner of the tag, a sub-pattern. It resembled a system, often used in defensive barriers, but Chiruki couldn't place it precisely. His own knowledge didn't stretch far beyond the Sealed Iron Wall.
Still, he said nothing. He merely observed.
The first tag was completed.
"What technique is that?" Chiruki finally asked.
"It's not ready yet."
Garou moved onto the next. It took a few minutes, but then another tag was complete.
And then another.
Soon, eight tags in total lay before him in an eight-point formation.
Garou stood, dusting off his hands.
"Shall we try it?"
Chiruki nodded.
Garou moved, placing the tags in a precise pattern on the stone floor, each one aligned to a cardinal direction with slight rotations, a small adjustment from the classic setup.
Once set, he stepped back and formed a single hand seal.
In an instant, the barrier activated.
"A Binding Formation?" Chiruki asked, but his expression shifted the next second.
"No... wait. It's draining my chakra? Don't tell me..."
His eyes widened.
His limbs refused to move.
He was locked down, not just physically, but spiritually. He could feel the drain as the barrier absorbed his chakra in small, steady pulses.
But what shocked him most... was Garou.
He wasn't holding the seal anymore.
The Binding Formation usually required the user to maintain a seal to sustain the effect. That was why it was primarily used by coordinated teams, not individuals.
Yet Garou stood with his arms crossed.
"I see now..." Kakashi murmured, his one visible eye narrowing in appreciation.
"Impressive!"
Garou had fused a chakra-absorption element into the Binding Formation.
The draining effect delayed the target just long enough for the full immobilization to activate without needing a constant hand seal.
Even if the entire trap lasted only a few seconds, in a battle, that was the difference between life and death.
Just like now.
Chiruki tried to sever his link with the seal formation.
He even tried to shift his chakra internally to break free.
But he stopped cold.
A blade had touched his neck.
Half a second later, Garou released the barrier.
Another moment, and the Binding Formation faded.
Chiruki exhaled sharply, stepping back. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
"That's... an incredible technique. You really came up with that just now?"
"Of course not," Garou replied, calmly collecting the tags. "I was able to finish the formation because I've been studying sealing techniques for half a month. But I've been studying barrier formations for two months now."
"Creation is never spontaneous," he added. "It's built on layers of preparation."
Chiruki fell silent. The words echoed in his mind, uneasily.
'Two months of barrier study? Half a month of sealing?'
He recalled how he'd spent two years just grasping the Sealed Iron Wall. Granted, he'd divided his time with taijutsu and spiritual training, but even with full dedication, it would've taken most a year.
'And this kid...?' Chiruki clenched his jaw slightly.
What was he compared to someone like Garou?
