Gin Ichimaru looked at Shin with his usual foxy smile. "Captain Shin, is there something I can help you with?"
Gin was on high alert. Although Shin claimed to need his help, Gin didn't entirely trust him.
What could Shin Uzumaki possibly need his help with? Was there anything Shin couldn't do himself?
"It's simple. I'd like you to spar with someone for me, Captain Ichimaru."
"A spar? I think I'll pass. I'm well aware that I'm no match for you, Captain Shin." Gin refused outright.
There was no point in fighting a battle he couldn't win. It was better to just say no.
"Hmph. At least you know your place," Soi Fon scoffed. She found Gin's constant, insincere smile irritating.
She hated that kind of fake grin.
"The spar isn't with me. It's with him." Shin shook his head, gesturing to Byakuya Kuchiki behind him.
Gin's eyes narrowed slightly at the sight of Byakuya. Ah, Byakuya Kuchiki. If the opponent was him, Gin didn't mind at all.
He knew of Byakuya, of course. Despite being a mere squad member, his reputation as a prodigy was well-known throughout the Seireitei.
He was a genius, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, he would one day become the head of the Kuchiki clan.
"Fighting you, Captain Shin? No thanks... But a match with him is another story," Gin said with a smile.
"You'd better be careful. Captain Gin's Shinsō is no joke for you," Shin warned Byakuya, who gave a slight nod.
"Hmph."
Soi Fon shot another glare at Byakuya and huffed again, her face etched with anger. Shin playfully pinched her cheek.
"What's with the sudden temper?" he asked.
"Captain Shin, that Byakuya has shown you no respect! He just stands there with that cold look, as if you owe him money."
Soi Fon really couldn't stand Byakuya. Shin, however, knew that was just Byakuya's nature—cold and aloof to outsiders.
It was the kind of personality that drove people away. When you tried to talk to someone and they just gave you a blank, cold stare, it was easy to think they had a problem with you.
It was a shame, really. If only Byakuya and Gin could balance each other out. Gin was always smiling, but his smile was just as fake.
————————————
They moved to the 3rd Division training grounds, where the squad members gathered, watching with curiosity.
"Scatter, Senbonzakura."
He'd already lost to Soi Fon—he wasn't about to underestimate a Captain. In truth, their spiritual pressures were both at Captain-level.
Yes, though still a squad member, Byakuya already possessed the spiritual pressure of a Captain. He was a true genius.
The reason he hadn't been promoted was due to his grandfather, Ginrei Kuchiki's, wishes. He probably wanted to temper Byakuya's skills. A bit of a stretch in Shin's opinion.
"Such a beautiful Zanpakutō. The most gorgeous I've ever seen," Gin remarked, his slit eyes opening a fraction. "But gorgeous isn't the same as powerful. Watch yourself."
A sharp aura emanated from him.
Whatever Shin's motive was for bringing Byakuya here, Gin knew he had to win this fight.
His recent promotion meant he still needed to prove himself. A loss here would undermine his authority in his own squad.
"Shoot to kill, Shinsō."
Byakuya felt the danger and reacted instantly, gathering countless petal blades to form a shield.
Pfft!
A sharp pain shot through him. A bloody hole appeared on his shoulder. If he hadn't dodged, his heart would have been pierced.
"Byakuya Kuchiki, I don't hold back," Gin said coolly. "Even in a spar, you could easily lose your life."
The fight was at a clear disadvantage for Byakuya. Shinsō's piercing attacks were impossible to block completely—he had to rely on his own speed to dodge.
A single misstep could be fatal. If Gin were to use his Bankai, Kamishini no Yari, now, he could probably kill Byakuya in an instant.
Gin had already mastered his Bankai and could sustain it for short periods.
But it was his trump card, a move he was saving for Aizen. He wouldn't use it so casually.
"Bankai! Senbonzakura Kageyoshi."
Byakuya released his Zanpakutō's hilt. It dropped to the ground, sinking into it like a ripple in water. From the ripples on either side, two rows of giant blades rose from the ground.
The blades instantly shattered into a whirlwind of cherry blossoms, the number of petals far exceeding what his Shikai could produce—a hundred million blades in total.
This was no exaggeration, especially in Byakuya's hands.
"Not bad. He can use Bankai."
Shin noted with a nod. He could see Byakuya was struggling to maintain it, but it was impressive nonetheless.
Sensing his spiritual pressure draining rapidly, Byakuya knew he had to end this fast.
If he dragged it on, he wouldn't even need Gin to defeat him—he'd run out of spiritual pressure and his Bankai would deactivate on its own.
"Senkei, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi."
The billion blades of Senbonzakura Kageyoshi formed a sphere, trapping Gin inside.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
Shinsō pierced through from the inside. A wave of spiritual pressure scattered the petals.
"You lose."
Gin's blade was an inch from Byakuya's heart. The only reason it hadn't gone further wasn't because he was showing mercy, but because Shin's hand had caught the blade.
"Captain Gin, for my sake, let's not make this a killing blow. I did bring him here, after all. And killing him would be a real headache," Shin said with a smile.
"Of course. If not for anyone else's sake, I'd certainly do it for you, Captain Shin," Gin said with his usual smile, as if he hadn't just been about to kill Byakuya.
But then again, Byakuya hadn't held back either. If Gin hadn't briefly released his Bankai, he might have been the one to die.
"Come with me for now." Shin looked at Byakuya and healed his shoulder. Seeing the advanced healing Kidō, Byakuya was momentarily stunned.
Besides the members of the 4th Division, not many could use healing Kidō. But Shin's Kidō had been taught to him by Unohana herself.
Byakuya gave Gin one last look and followed Shin. He'd lost again. Twice in one day.
