Chapter 108: A Simple Swim
"Ryosuke-sama."
Sand Village.
The room was heavy with the sharp scent of herbs and a faint trace of blood.
Tamao lay on the bed, looking pale and weak. Standing in front of him was Ryosuke, who had been secretly following the team.
The canyon ambush had been brutal. The enemy force included dozens of Chunin and five Jonin—an elite group no matter which village they came from. Their total annihilation was undoubtedly a devastating loss for whoever had sent them.
Perhaps because of that, the journey afterward had been unusually quiet.
Konoha's delegation arrived safely at Sand Village, where they reunited with the representatives from the Land of Fire. The severely injured were treated and left to recover in the village, while the rest of the group rented a boat to head toward the Land of Waves.
Taking advantage of the calm, Ryosuke finally had a chance to visit Tamao.
"I'm sorry. If I'd been more careful... maybe you wouldn't have lost your arm."
Ryosuke looked at him with visible guilt. He had prepared for casualties—any leader should—but when it actually happened, it hit differently. He couldn't ignore the pain of those who believed in him.
"Please don't blame yourself, Ryosuke-sama," Tamao said, his voice full of earnestness. "Serving you is an honor."
He smiled weakly. "Besides, if it weren't for you, our losses would've been much worse."
"I owe you everything. You gave me the chance to prove myself."
On the way here, Tamao had already learned the extent of what Ryosuke did while controlling his body. He single-handedly killed several Chunin, helped the team push back over a dozen enemies, and eventually confronted a Jonin from the Sand Village directly—destroying their puppet at the cost of his own arm.
It was a battle achievement Tamao never imagined he'd have associated with his name.
Everyone in the squad treated him like a hero. Even Homura, one of Konoha's high-ranking elders, praised him personally.
In a ninja's life, honor and mission go hand in hand. And for Tamao, trading an arm for such recognition? Worth it.
Ryosuke could sense the sincerity in his words—it wasn't just some polite formality. And somehow, that made the guilt in his chest ease, if only a little.
"I'll find a way to restore your arm," Ryosuke promised solemnly. "That's a promise."
In this world, where chakra could create miracles and limbs could regenerate, Ryosuke had no doubt that one day, he'd gain the power to make it happen.
Tamao's eyes lit up with gratitude. "Thank you, Ryosuke-sama!"
It was rare for a branch family member to receive such a promise. Usually, they were expected to give everything without expecting anything in return. That Ryosuke even acknowledged him this way—it meant the world.
Ryosuke nodded silently, then turned to leave. He gave everyone a few simple instructions to rest well before heading off to catch up with Hyuga Hizashi and the others.
He understood Tamao's mentality. The Hyuga clan's family structure made sacrifice a given. Branch families were born into it.
Still, just because Ryosuke understood that mindset didn't mean he could accept it blindly. These people were willing to risk their lives for him—knowing the truth, yet still following him without hesitation.
He couldn't treat that lightly.
Responsibility—real responsibility—meant being accountable to those who followed him with eyes wide open.
But for now, he had more immediate matters to deal with.
Suppressing the swirl of emotions in his chest, Ryosuke made his way to the edge of the cliff.
Below him stretched the endless blue expanse of the sea.
He had already scouted the area and found no traces of enemy movement. Every step he'd taken on the beach had been wiped clean. It was his habit to leave nothing behind—organized, methodical, and cautious.
Now, it was time to move.
They had to take the water route next.
Ryosuke looked out at the sea, calm and unblinking. Slowly, he took off his clothes, revealing a lean yet muscular frame. His muscles were well-balanced, toned from training—built for power and agility.
When clothed, his fair skin and calm demeanor made him look like a fragile scholar.
But stripped down, he had the physique of a warrior—raw, powerful, and disciplined.
He sealed his clothes into a scroll he had prepared earlier.
Splash—
Without hesitation, Ryosuke sprinted forward and dove from the cliff.
He cut through the air gracefully and entered the sea with barely a sound, causing almost no splash. If there were an Olympics in this world, Ryosuke would've walked away with gold in diving.
Underwater, he glided like a fish released back into its natural element.
As part of the Konoha delegation, Hyuga Hizashi and his team could travel openly by boat—even if they had to remain alert to possible ambushes. But Ryosuke couldn't do the same.
There was little cover on the open sea. Traveling by boat would only make him a visible target. If he were spotted, it would raise suspicion—by both the Land of Waves and even his own allies.
So he had no choice but to swim.
Crossing the sea physically might sound like a monumental task. But in a world of chakra, it wasn't impossible. Most trained ninjas could manage it. It was simply a matter of distance and endurance.
Ryosuke didn't even use chakra. He relied purely on physical strength, diving deep and swimming with incredible speed—comparable to that of a shark.
Despite his speed, he stayed alert.
He couldn't be sure other nations hadn't sent their own infiltrators. The ninja world looked peaceful on the surface, but the ambush they had faced earlier made it clear—their alliance plans had been exposed.
The fact that they were attacked mid-journey confirmed it.
Ryosuke suspected the enemy was already in the Land of Waves, waiting to sabotage the talks.
Fortunately, Hyuga Hizashi had already made landfall and discreetly informed Ryosuke through special means. That at least meant the people behind the attacks weren't ready to start a war outright.
They were cautious, preferring secret disruption over open conflict.
But they were playing with fire.
The alliance wasn't just between the Land of Fire and Wind. Other small and mid-sized nations had joined too—like the Land of Snow, Land of Bears, Land of Hot Water, and the Land of Iron.
These nations, though not powerhouses on their own, each had unique strengths. And together, they formed a coalition that could rival even the great powers.
Among them were traditionally neutral countries like the Land of Iron and Hot Water. If someone provoked a full-scale war, it would no longer be a matter between a few rival nations.
It would ignite the entire ninja world.
