Natural Disasters Strikes: I stockpiled like crazy!-Chapter 266: Rescue Wang Chul (2)
Wang Chul and the others sprang into action. He wanted to avoid a fight. In their current condition, even a small clash could cost lives. Yet the heavy thudding above made his chest tighten. It seemed unavoidable.
Ma Guosheng and the others were nervous as well. Their faces were pale, lips dry, eyes darting toward the ceiling. Fingers trembled slightly as they tightened their grips on their weapons, as if trying to squeeze courage out of cold metal.
"Those who are still able to fight, get ready."
Before he could finish, a loud booming voice came from above.
"Grumpy Wang, are you in there?!"
The words hit like a stone thrown into still water.
Wang Chul froze.
That voice.
That nickname.
For a heartbeat, he wondered if exhaustion had made him hallucinate.
"...Madam Lin?" His voice came out hoarse, thick with disbelief.
Above, Lin Daxia let out a breath she did not realize she had been holding. "Wang, open the door. This is the rescue team from the base!"
Rescue team?
The words sank in slowly, then all at once.
Someone behind him sucked in a shaky breath. Another person lowered their weapon, shoulders trembling. Hope, fragile, buried, almost forgotten, forced its way back into their chests.
The base had not abandoned them!
Eyes reddened. A few people blinked rapidly, as if afraid tears would fall. Even the suffocating air in the underground room seemed lighter.
Wang Chul rushed up the stairs and unlocked the hatch. The metal door groaned as it opened, and bright light spilled down, making several people squint after the dimness below.
Lin Daxia’s sharp gaze swept across the injured. Her expression tightened briefly at the sight.
"Quickly, prioritize those with critical injuries!"
Despite the surge of relief, Wang Chul forced himself to stay rational. "Be careful," he warned urgently. "The mosquitoes. There were thousands this morning. Extremely aggressive."
Lin Daxia blinked, then waved a hand. "We’ve already dealt with the ones in this area."
Wang Chul stared at her.
Dealt with them?
His mind replayed dawn. The sky thick with wings, the sound like engines roaring, flesh disappearing in seconds.
"There were at least a thousand," he said slowly.
Lin Daxia gestured outside.
He followed her gaze.
Mosquitoes hovered in the distance.
But none came near the rescue team.
One drifted closer, then abruptly veered away midair, as if it had hit an invisible wall.
Wang Chul’s grip tightened on the stair railing.
"We used an insect repellant," Lin Daxia said.
An insect repellant?
It sounded absurd.
Yet the team moved freely, exposed skin visible, and the swarm avoided them completely.
Ma Guosheng whispered, "Is... is this real...?"
Wang Chul did not answer. His mind struggled to catch up with his eyes.
Longmen Base.
Lu Chenyu was on his way back from the good news that the so-called jade merchants didn’t show up. He took this opportunity to raise the price of the food and water.
Naturally, the survivors were furious! But they couldn’t do anything other than grit their teeth and buy! Right now, only Lu Chenyu had food and water.
Serves them right! I’ve been generous to even sell them food and water and they went to buy from another fraud merchant! Lu Chenyu sniggered coldly, never expecting the base he wanted to rule would be destroyed by his own hands.
The moment he stepped inside Lan Fuyou’s residence, a slap came across his face. The owner of the hand didn’t hold back its strength. Lu Chenyu’s cheek turned red instantly, heat spreading across his skin as the sting lingered.
Lu Chenyu raised his head and saw the culprit was Lu Meiying.
Now without her son, there’s no stopping her from defying Lu Chenyu.
"Lu Chenyu, how are you running the base? Don’t you even know that bitch Nanzhi was under our noses a few days ago! She even snuck during the mission. Because of you my son got killed by that bitch! If I knew that bitch was around, I would have killed her right away!"
"Lu Meiying, are you crazy?! Who gave you the gall to slap me!" Lu Chenyu was infuriated and returned a powerful slap sending Lu Meiying stumbling back with blood trickling the corner of her mouth.
This useless woman actually slapped him. The thought burned hotter than the pain on his cheek. Yet beneath the anger, her words echoed.
Nanzhi was in the base? Since when? And did she really kill Lu Jian?
Lu Meiying was a vengeful ghost that crawled from the underworld. The moment she recovered her footing, she instantly pounced on Lu Chenyu, scratching him all over, pulling his hair, landing slaps, and screaming in his ears like a banshee.
"Lu Chenyu, you bastard! Because of you, my son suffered! You poisoned my son and gave him endless pain. Lu Chenyu, I’ll kill you after that I’ll kill that bitch! You both should go to—"
Lu Meiying was after all a non-ability user and after drinking the vial last night, Lu Chenyu had turned into an ability user. He quickly subdued Lu Meiying, kicking her in the stomach.
Lu Meiying was sent flying with her back hitting the chair. "Keugh!" She weakly vomited on the side.
"Lu Meiying! You crazy fool! What does your son’s death have to do with me? Argh..." Lu Chenyu’s face was stinging with pain from the scratches Lu Meiying left. "Don’t blame me for you son’s death! If he was not a good for nothing and a coward, he wouldn’t die! You only have your son’s inability to blame! He couldn’t even stand against Nanzhi back then and even after in his death, he remained useless!" Lu Chenyu ruthlessly said.
"LU CHENYU!!! My son is not useless!" Lu Meiying screamed with seethed rage. "If you haven’t poisoned my son and didn’t insist on sending my son on the mission, he will still be alive! So you need to atone for my son’s death! You need to die—"
Thud.
"Ugh!" Lu Meiying was sent flying on the second time.
Lu Chenyu kicked Lu Meiying preventing her from scratching his face again. "Lu Meiying, you fool! So what if I poisoned him! He’s already a grown man! If he can’t bear that little pain, what’s the use of keeping him around!" He said with a poisonous smile.
Little pain? The words echoed in Lu Meiying’s mind like a curse. Her son’s agonized screams, his body writhing, all dismissed so lightly.
Which reminds her...
Lu Meiying looked at the scratches on Lu Chenyu’s face and broke into a maniacal laugh, "Ha ha ha..."
Lu Chenyu snarled at Lu Meiying’s laugh. There’s something about it that’s irritating especially that light in her eyes as if she gloating for a misfortune to befall on him, "Lu Meiying, what are you laughing for?!"
"That’s enough!" Lan Fuyou who had been enjoying the spectacle finally spoke.
