New World with Four Husbands-Chapter 251: A raven’s pair quest [8]
Chapter 251: A raven’s pair quest [8]
Coco had been walking through the forest for a while now, the only light coming from the moon above and the stars scattered in the sky.
The trees around her cast long shadows, their branches reaching out like dark specters ready to grab and injure those who got too close to the tree, giving every guard a silent threat to keep walking in their lane.
As they walked, their surroundings slowly changed, and the forest thinned out, revealing a large cliff dropping off into a deep gorge below.
The view of the cliff was stunning, there was a town below them— a glowing mass of lights that cut through the darkness of the forest and illuminated the forest floor as well as its surroundings.
It was a sight to behold, really.
Its buildings and streets are outlined by the glowing lamps, the glow casting long shadows across the ground below, a miraculous light and civilization in the midst of the wild unknown.
Coco knelt down at the edge of the cliff, her gaze fixed on the town below.
The town was eerily empty and silent, despite the fact that it was brightly lit and full of vibrant colors, especially with its every building seemingly in perfect condition, their interiors painted a soft, faded white, and their windows reflecting the moonlight.
The streets were wide and well-maintained, the cobblestones shining with polished smoothness and the curbs free from debris.
However, there were no people in the streets, no sounds of voices or music or laughter, like the town seemed desolate and deserted, as if every living resident had suddenly disappeared.
Alithe padded up to Coco’s side, peering over the edge of the cliff to get a better view of the town below.
He scanned the area with narrowed eyes, his gaze darting from building to building as he searched for any signs of danger.
"No monster in sight," He said, his words quiet and barely a whisper, "But they’re loud.. Their noises are all over the place."
Despite the absence of the monsters they were hunting, there was no sense of relief in his tone, his words were heavy, the implications of his statement clear.
They were not safe yet, and with the monsters’ absence, it only meant that they were lurking somewhere nearby.
Coco nodded her head and slowly stood up, her gaze turning towards the fluffy white creature still sitting in her arms, who was purring quite loudly and strongly against her.
She looked at the creature for a moment, her expression softening as she gave her a quick nod as Coco gently set the creature down on the ground, gesturing her to go to the guards.
"Konoha, you stay put with the guards," Coco said gently, her voice soft and firm. "Protect them."
The creature’s head tilted to the side, her brown eyes locked on Coco’s face with an intensity that made her feel like she was being judged.
She understands Coco’s words, and she lets out a soft mewing sound in response, as if acknowledging Coco’s command, her furry ears twitching as she looks up at Coco, her gaze fixed on her face.
Coco’s gaze shifted to the nearby guards, their eyes fixed on the creature with a combination of awe and wariness.
They are surprised at the creature’s ability to understand Coco’s command, their gazes fixed on the creature as they stood guard.
Coco turned to the guards, her gaze serious and focused.
They straightened their postures, the woman’s gaze before them sending a jolt down their spine.
"Do not engage," Coco said firmly, her voice leaving no room for argument. "If the monsters spotted you, just run. Don’t pull your swords out of its sheath. No matter what."
The guards nodded, their faces stern and tense with agreement.
They knew the importance of her words and they were prepared to carry out her instructions, no matter the cost, because who are they to disobey the woman who had risked her life to protect them?
Her gaze swept over the group of men, her expression solemn. "Prioritize your safety above all else. We can’t afford any losses. Is that clear?"
The guards exchanged glances, their faces tense with nerves, but their resolve clear, their hands gripping their weapons tightly, each one of them lowering their head to show their respect towards Coco.
Coco let out a sigh through her nose and suddenly grabbed Alithe’s arm without a word, her grip firm and sure.
Her grip on his limb took him by surprise, his eyes wide and Coco ignored the reaction as she looked back at the guards, her expression neutral.
"We’re going on ahead," She informed them, her tone soft, but firm. "Keep what I said in mind."
"Yes, ma’am." The vice captain answered on behalf of his fellow guards, their expressions tense, but determined, understanding that the time for discussion was over.
Coco merely nodded curtly to the guards, a silent farewell, before she started pulling Alithe away.
She didn’t look back, her eyes fixed on the path ahead as she moved quickly towards the edge which caused Alithe to stumble for a moment, caught off guard by her sudden action, but quickly recovered and followed her lead.
However, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion when they kept walking over to the edge.
"Coco?" Alithe called out softly, halting in his tracks after sensing something bad would happen if he stayed quiet, "I thought we’re going now..? Why are we moving closer to the cliff?"
Coco was quiet for a moment, only tugging Alithe to get him moving towards the edge. "We are going, alright?"
"We’re going?" Alithe echoed with a frown, his dark sweeping across the gorge below before shifting to Coco’s face, "How are we going down if we’re moving towards the edge.."
The words slowly died down in his mouth as he realized what Coco was planning.
"Wait, don’t tell me that you’re planning—"
"Ravens can fly, right?" Coco asked, cutting Alithe off with a smile, "Then, this shouldn’t scare you."
