New World with Four Husbands-Chapter 56: Concern or curiosity?
Chapter 56: Concern or curiosity?
"Coco Hughes is back!"
"She’s back!"
"It’s a flying pig again.."
"She’s carrying a bag.. What could be inside?"
"I heard that she brings back food to her husbands.. They’re so lucky.."
"Quick! Get in line in front of the butcher shop!"
The villagers had different words to say when Coco walked through the gate of the village and Coco managed to hear everything.
She felt disgusted by the people who said that Coco Hughes’s husbands were lucky to be married to her because of the food she brings back, but they don’t know what kind of abuse those four had to endure before she took over Coco Hughes’s body.
People would be envious of other people without knowing the circumstances, all because of what they could see and unaware of what was happening behind closed doors.
"Don’t mind them, Coco." Lala spoke up, her right hand patting Coco’s head in hopes of comforting her human friend.
Coco knows that she shouldn’t mind the words of those people, but thinking about the situation of the husbands while other people were envious of them made her blood boil.
It just reminded her of her mother.
Getting reminded of what her mother went through made Coco’s eyebrows furrowed as a frown made its way to her face, the queasiness she feels evident.
Lala could tell that Coco wouldn’t listen to her no matter how much she tried to cheer her up so she pursed her lips, puffing her cheeks out as she stayed silent, opting to hug Coco’s head instead of saying anything.
The way to the butcher shop was quiet and tense, not because Coco was mad at the fairy, but because she was just not in the mood.
She was thankful for the garden fairy for staying quiet and just hugging her.
By the time they arrived at the butcher shop, Jacques and Renaldo were about to get inside the shop, seemingly just arriving as well.
Renaldo was the first one to notice Coco’s approaching figure from the corner of his eye, making him furrow his eyebrows and turn his head to her direction to see if it really was Coco.
Coco Hughes, his business partner and friend, has been arriving before night fall, before the househusbands or housewives cook something for supper, before everyone could decide what to have for dinner.
Seeing Coco Hughes approach them when the sun is barely hiding behind the horizon made him tilt his head, but he wasn’t complaining.
After all, it has been just three nights when Coco went to meet him and proclaim him as her business partner.
"My friend." Renaldo greeted the black haired woman with a nod of acknowledgement, "You seem extra early today, is everything alright?"
Coco blinked at him, was it a coincidence? Intuition? Or was he really curious? Concerned? His question made Coco think if he was asking out of curiosity, professionalism, or concern— he’s her friend, right?
Why am I doubting him now? I’m the one who asked him to be my friend. Coco grumbled in her mind and nodded her head to answer Renaldo’s question.
Coco’s doubt felt like it came out of nowhere.
Was it because she almost died today? Was it because she couldn’t shake off the feeling of fear when she fell into the unexpectedly deep pool of waterfall? That must be it.
Yeah, that must be it. Coco told herself, convincing herself that she was just having doubts and getting irritated by everything because of her experience back in the waterfall deep in the mountain’s forest.
Renaldo nodded his head and opened the door wider, "Go inside first, that flying pig must be heavy."
"Thank you." Coco murmured and walked past him, the wings of the flying pig smacked him in the face when she walked past, making him splutter out saliva in an attempt to not make the feathers enter his mouth.
"Watch your manners!" Jacques called out from the interior of the shop, hearing her husband’s spluttering.
"Sorry! It’s just the feathers!" Renaldo retorted back, continuing what he was doing, but on a corner outside of the shop this time.
Coco dropped the flying pig on the counter, the skin of the pig smacking loudly which resonated inside the shop and bounced off the walls, sounding almost like a melody for the ears of the women inside.
"This one is quite bigger than the one you bought yesterday." Jacques commented, her hand caressing the feather wings and smiling softly, "I think we can earn forty to fifty five gold coins for this one."
Coco hummed, raising the bag slightly and sneaking her hand inside to grab an orange and a grape, then she handed it to Jacques, "I might come back late today and won’t be able to help you two sell the meat so have these as an alternative for energy drink."
Jacques blinked with her eyebrows furrowing, "Those fruits look expensive.. It’s okay, Coco. We know that you’ll give us our salary of the day, there’s no need for the frui—"
Not letting Jacques finish what she was saying, Coco thrusted the fruits in her hands and walked towards the door, "Give Mrs. Tani a gold coin discount for every part of the pig she will buy, okay? I owe her one!"
"Wait, Coco—" Jacques tried to rush to her, but Coco already stepped out and closed the door.
Coco felt a bit bad for what she did because that was rude of her, but she knew that Jacques wouldn’t accept the fruits if she didn’t go out at that moment.
Sighing heavily, Coco rounded the corner and saw Renaldo going back to the shop.
"Just like what I said yesterday and the other night, pick a part that you want and put it aside. The part I want for today is a kilo of pork belly." Coco said, informing him of what she wants to take home to the four husbands that night.
Renaldo nodded his head, but stared at her, "Are you sure you’re okay?"ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
