Chapter 674: Worries and anxiety

When Coco and others arrived at the site where the carriages were parked, Cleora had separated them.

"Jacques and her mediators will go to the other carriage." Cleora quickly informed all of them before grabbing the pink haired woman’s wrist and dragging her to the carriage in front of Coco’s carriage.

"But why?!" Coco asked, raising her voice so her mother would be able to hear her.

Jonathan and Renaldo scrambled to follow behind Cleora, the two of them sharing a worried glance with each other before deciding to just ignore Coco and let Cleora answer her questions.

Coco’s mediators were already inside the carriage and Alhai poked his head out.

"Coco." He called his wife with a sigh. "I think mother wanted them to ride another carriage because the space inside of this one is already cramped."

Coco whisked her head around. "Cramped? This carriage is big—"

But she stopped in her tracks once she looked inside the wooden vehicle and found out that Alhai was correct.

"Oh.." Coco mumbled, eyebrows furrowing.

"Oh indeed." The silver haired mediator hummed and held out his hand. "Come on. Get inside now. They will be fine."

Coco blinked and stared at his hand for a moment before she craned her neck to look at the other carriage parked in front, her lips forming a straight line.

"Fine.." She grumbled and accepted Alhai’s hand. "I’m just a little worried."

"They’ll be fine." Zaque stated, watching as his wife stepped inside the carriage with the help of the third husband. "It’s not like they will be separated from us after this."

"Yeah.." Coco sighed and let Alhai guide her to settle between him and Zaque.

"Don’t you trust your mother?" Kairo couldn’t help, but ask, his eyebrows furrowing. "You sound so worried despite them being led by your mother.. Is there something for you to be worried about?"

Coco shook her head. "It’s not like that."

Since Quizen and Zaque were sitting right next to the carriage door, it was Zaque who took it upon himself to close it to lock in the warmth that was being emitted by the magical heaters placed above them.

"Then what is it, Coco?" Quizen inquired, letting his eyes settle on his wife.

Coco was placed between Zaque and Alhai, and adjacent to them was Kairo, Heiren, and Quizen— it was an agreed spot to make sure that all of them would be able to protect Coco if something were to happen.

"I just can’t help it." Coco grumbled, shrinking back down into her seat.

"Why would you be worried?" Alhai repeated Kairo’s question with a sigh, his hand resting on her knee. "Mother is a reliable person.. That should be evident enough given that she was the one who acted first after you got attacked."

"Seriously, it’s not about that." Coco groaned, shooting Alhai a disgruntled glare.

"Then what is it, Coco?" Heiren sighed.

"I’m just worried because I was the reason why they had to run away with us in the first place." Coco grunted out, her hands clenching under her cloak as she kept her gaze down onto the carriage floor.

She’s not used to opening up about her feelings, but just as they have talked about earlier.. It was time for her to trust the people around her more.

So, she will start with her husbands— and soon-to-be husband.

All of them stared at Coco in surprise, not really expecting her to blame herself for the Baroness’ attack and feel guilty about it when she was the one who got hurt.

"It’s.. Not your fault." Kairo spoke up, his voice soft. "You’re never responsible for the Baroness’ actions, Coco."

"She’s my mother." Coco stated with a frown. "Well.. Not my mother, but Coco Hughes’ mother.. And that alone is putting all of you in danger, so it’s kind of my fault."

"Not really." Heiren huffed, making Coco flinch in her seat.

Zaque placed his hand on her knee, just like Alhai did, and squeezed her limb to make her know that everything is fine— hoping that it would at least lessen the worry and anxiety she’s feeling.

"How.. How is this not my fault, Heiren?" Coco croaked out, her lips trembling.

"Because you have no control over Baroness Hughes’ decisions and actions." Alhai answered, beating Heiren into it.

Silence enveloped the carriage and no one dared to break it for a moment.

They could see that Coco was having a hard time grasping the fact that she wasn’t at fault for whatever’s happening to them right now, and even if she was, then it’s a risk all of them are willing to take.

Still, seeing her look so troubled about something she’s not at fault with is heartbreaking.

Zaque could only offer comfort by pulling his hand away and wrapping his arm around her shoulder instead, letting her lean her head against him and bury her face on his neck.

The sight made the others feel incredibly bad.

Knowing that Coco was anxious that Baroness Hughes might try something again so she doesn’t want her friends out of her sight is something they weren’t expecting to witness before.

"It will be fine." Quizen mumbled, his voice soft and low, afraid that speaking too loud might break Coco.

"You don’t have to worry." Kairo agreed with Quizen’s statement using his own, making the others nod their head to silently agree with the two. "Your mother is powerful, and she knows it. She’s using it to keep the Baroness in check."

Kairo wasn’t wrong. Ever since all of them left the main city, they have seen the Baroness send out a messenger bird while traveling.

Before the carriage was thrown over by a group of mercenaries— or assassins, Zaque caught sight of Cleora sending away a little bird into the sky, which soon became invisible the moment it left her finger.

Not only is she powerful among nobilities, but she’s obviously strong, too. The red haired mediator thought, his arm tightening around his wife.
