Night Monarch's Cannon Fodder Bride-Chapter 41: Three Months Deadline
"Be my fiancée, Miss Severine Vale."
Severine blinked before letting out a silly, "Huh?"
It took her a second to register the meaning behind those words. So to say, the young villain wanted her to act as his fiancée.
That was what he meant by partnership.
It wasn’t new to act as romantic partners on the surface. Her mother wanted her to do the exact same thing with Emmett.
This could be related to her sudden awakening.
If not for that, there was nothing that could interest Killian in making such a wild suggestion.
Her fingers hit the screen with more force than necessary. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
[No.]
Just one word, bold and clear.
Killian’s eyes narrowed in contemplation while his lips pursed in a thin line. He wasn’t even tapping on the armrest anymore.
"Why? You didn’t even take a minute to consider my offer."
The perks that came with the title of his fiancée were undeniably tempting. And if Killian had asked her before her prophetic dreams, she would have most likely agreed.
[Don’t want to.]
Another bold statement—petty, blunt, and dangerously honest. It almost sounded like a child throwing a tantrum.
Ah, what have I written?
Severine double-checked the content only to frown. But it was too late to retrieve it.
She had already shown the screen to the young lord, making him equally baffled.
In their world, every word needed to have a proper weight, clear meaning, and intent. Who would dismiss Killian Rhett King with a simple ’don’t want to?’
Something is strange. Severine thoughtfully lowered the phone.
It was like she was back to her childhood when her temper would flare at the smallest provocation.
Her memories of that time were a bit fuzzy, like an old dusty picture. She could barely recall a few snippets.
Maybe it was also related to this sudden fire coiled inside her.
"Don’t want to... really?"
Killian leaned in, studying her more closely. There was no sign of bluffing on her pale face.
Is my charm not working anymore? Such a baffling thought crossed his mind.
"Um... Why not consider it as an option for now?" he tried again. "You can give me your answer in three months."
Three months...
That would be near the annual business summit.
Severine didn’t let her thoughts wander into childish territory anymore.
And if she refused too firmly, it would be equivalent to slapping Killian on the face.
Not that she hadn’t done that already.
"Hmm."
That simple agreement brought a smile back on Killian’s face. His eyes glittered as he grabbed the banana from the side table and started peeling it.
Thinking his actions seemed rude, he offered it to Severine, only to be ruthlessly rejected again with just a cold look.
She isn’t easy to get along with.
Coincidentally, his thoughts aligned perfectly well with Severine, just the person was replaced with him.
Killian’s actions were too strange to make sense of.
Young or not, any member of the Kings was sure to have a screw loose in their head.
Perhaps if something irked Killian, he wouldn’t hesitate to kick her out.
The minds of crazed ones could be fickle to begin with. She didn’t want to risk it.
Two days. That was how long she was going to stay in Luminar Manor. Until then, she had to control her emotions well.
"Tell me if you need anything," the young lord said while taking a big bite of the cream-colored soft pulp, enjoying the sweetness.
"Dr. Edmund said your body is rather delicate. So, it’s better to follow his advice on your diet. As for what kind of bloodline flows through you..." he trailed off, nearly scaring Severine into overthinking.
Only when those deep gray eyes were solely fixed on him did he shake his head with a fake sigh. "We have no clue. Swan or bat, none seems to match you."
Isabella was famous in the business circle during her better days. Her story of falling for a middle-class man had swept the headlines for a long time.
Hence, it didn’t surprise her that Killian knew about her parents’ bloodline.
Austin Lockwood had taken after Victor Lockwood. Blood-sucking fangs had protruded inside his mouth when he was eight, exactly the time when he was taken back to Vale Mansion.
"It’s strange, don’t you think?" Killian tossed the yellow peel into the dustbin with a flick of his wrist.
It was. Severine subconsciously nodded along.
His gaze was taking in all of the microexpressions on her face, partially amused, and partially relieved at not getting another dead eye look.
"So, stay here until you figure it out."
He stood up from the chair. Taller than Damien’s, his broad shadow swallowed Severine whole.
"Call me if you need anything, Miss Vale."
He reached the doors. Then, recalling something, he stupidly smacked his forehead before turning back.
"Give me your phone," he said. However, without waiting for Severine to make a move, he directly grabbed it.
Swiftly entering a string of numbers, he saved it with his name.
"Here you go."
When Severine noticed the number, she recalled the assistant who had once called her on Killian’s behalf.
So, it could only be Killian’s personal number.
The young lord left just as unannounced as he came, leaving Severine with a headache.
Killian might not have directly said it, but he pointed toward the issue rather bluntly.
Even the illegitimate child had the same bloodline as Victor Lockwood. So why was it different for her?
If this news were to get out, it would cause another storm in her life.
She had guessed it might be related to her paternal grandparents. However, Victor had never once mentioned having anything related to fire in his family.
What if her guess was entirely wrong?
A vague, almost terrifying idea began to take shape in her mind. Before it sat in the recesses of her mind, she forcefully pressed it down.
Awakened or not, she needed to focus more on her career.
For her, that was the only way she could persist despite the kind of hidden truth behind her bloodline.
