Nightblade (Darkest night)-Chapter 164: Veliscera wraith
"Use the blades!"
Hearing the urgency in Sarenus’s voice, Morgan’s eyes widened in realisation.
While his body was bruised and battered, his mind was still clear, for the most part, considering he’d experienced how it felt to be split between Sarenus’ consciousness and his own.
The mystical blades still contained a significant portion of energy from absorbing the silver ichor of the staggering number of veliscera it had slain.
During the void flow, the dual blades had also absorbed a significant portion of the mystical white flames and darkness from the Spirit Void, which essentially made them the best fallback plan.
Before he could fully process what was happening, his body was already instinctively moving on its own.
A split second later, he brandished the Blood Reaper blades, feeling the rampant residual energy contained within the blades.
Without much thought, he let out a shout, violently swinging the blades through the air at the same time.
"Come on, work...’ he thought frantically.
With uncanny precision, the blades came alive, pulsing in unison with his intent.
For a second time, the battlefield lit up once more.
Twin bursts of flame and darkness burst forth, lighting up the darkness in a bizarre slash of light fused with ethereal fragments of darkness.
The resulting force sped through the sir with brutal tenacity, wildly crashing against the waves of destruction emanating from the transforming veliscera and in the process slowing down Morgan’s descent just enough for him to jump and awkwardly tuck and roll, landing safely a few feet away.
In the next moment, the Veliscera’s body trembled violently, the dark veins within its body glowing and pulsating chaotically.
The translucent creature’s efforts at resisting the onslaught of the wave of immolating flames had pushed it far beyond its limits.
Perhaps in a moment of last-ditch desperation, the veliscera had gathered an unprecedented amount of umbralis, an amount far beyond what its body could handle.
And the result was beyond devastating, for it at least.
While the fierce tide of umbralis had ultimately vanquished the flames, it had also devastated the veliscera’s body beyond what it could repair.
Umbralis, within the limits of what the body could handle, had several boons.
Accelerated healing, inhuman durability and unreal stamina.
Continuous exposure to the elusive energy would inevitably augment the body of any compatible creature, but the very same force could completely and utterly destroy.
Morgan stared at the scene with a dark fascination, his eyes narrowing in contemplation.
From the flow of umbralis, it felt the creature had turned into a black hole for the elusive energy, a vacuum of sorts.
From time to time, the Veliscera’s body spasmed erratically, and its mouth would open in what Morgan could only imagine was agonising pain.
With the progression of the transformation, Morgan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
"The wraiths are the creatures that ultimately survive the process, turning into ruthlessly powerful beings with uncanny intelligence. "
"When you put it that way, I’m almost convinced that it’s supposed to be a good thing. "
Judging from the transformation, a shadow wraith was definitely going to be born.l
The veliscera’s grotesque transformation continued with even larger and more spontaneous bursts of destructive energy sweeping across the battlefield.
As Morgan watched the transformation, he could immediately fathom to an extent just how powerful the veliscera wraith was becoming.
While he could instinctively sense the danger that the wraith paused, he was still inexplicably drawn to the unfolding phenomenon.
The Veliscera’s body glowed with a strange incandescent light, pulsating eerily like a beacon in the darkness.
In the next moment, the ground trembled slightly.
Morgan frowned slightly.
" An earthquake?"
Suddenly, the entire plain went eerily still.
Then an explosion of darkness washed over the plain, pushing Morgan back.
With a low shout, he dug his blades into the ground, holding onto them with the remainder of his strength.
Morgan felt the wraith’s presence before he saw it.
When the dust cleared, he subconsciously took a step back at the sight of the wraith,
His eyes widened in surprise at the sheer power radiating off the tenebrous being.
" And what is this supposed to be? A veliscera wraith?"
The thing standing before him was almost twice the Veliscera’s height.
Instead of the veliscera’s translucent skin, a jet black sheen shimmered around the wraith, small whisks of darkness continuously riding off of its enormous body.
" Are we going to have to fight this thing?"
Almost as though the wraith could hear him, it turned in his direction.
"Shit!"
Suddenly, Morgan couldn’t move.
No matter how he tried, his limbs refused to obey him.
" Shit, shit shit !"
The fatigue from the previous battles crashed into him relentlessly.
He would have staggered if
He stood frozen in place like a statue.
His entire body ached from the fury of the previous battles.
In fact, if it wasn’t for the wraith’s power holding him in place, he probably would have fast to the ground.
While his mind was still mostly sentient, the cumulative strain of fighting at a level beyond what his body could handle was finally catching up to him.
The stress exerted from continuously regenerating and healing his wounds in the heat of battle slammed into him all at once.
With almost agonising slowness, the Veliscera walked towards him.
Every step felt like an eternity, his mind feverishly thinking of any of the available options at his disposal that could rescue him from his current predicament.
"Come on, Morgan...think..."
With every step, the veliscera wraith’s presence increased exponentially, its power growing at a staggering pace.
Morgan inwardly groaned.
"How is this even supposed to be fair..."
It felt like fate was playing a cruel joke on him.
Just when it seemed like he’d acquired the power to vanquish his foes, fate seemed to laugh right in his face and shake its head mockingly at him.
"Void flow is out of the question."
Sarenus had cautioned him against the danger of using the obscure ability in such a state.
"Using void flow so soon will cause more harm than good, and in the condition you’re in, even then, it’s not a guarantee that you can defeat this thing."
"Then what do you suggest we do?" Morgan asked, racking his brain in frustration.
"We’ll play it by the book. And remember what I told you. I won’t allow you to die."
A moment later, the hulking wraith arrived in front of him.
From up front, Morgan realised just how massive the creature was.
While it had been shrouded in an impenetrable veil of darkness, massive dual horns sprouted from either side of its forehead, intertwining together in an intricate spiral.
Massive dark veins pulsed on its muscular forearms.
Its gargantuan hands ended in massive claws.
Where it formerly had one tail, a second, smaller one had sprouted from its back, ending in a cruel, jagged spike.
The veliscera grasped him, its clawed hands grasping his entire body in one massive hold.
Morgan inwardly screamed, but his mouth refused to move, his entire body remaining stubbornly still.
He tried to draw on the umbralis around, but nearly blacked from the effort.
Agonising waves of searing pain erupted through his body, his muscles screaming in pain.
Every nerve fibre ached with a searing heat, akin to being burned alive.
"I warned you," Sarenus said, his voice resounding sternly through Morgan’s head.
" I know it’s hard," he said calmly," and probably might sound crazy, but I need you to be calm. Trust me."
Morgan mentally took deep breaths.
The Veliscera’s gras felt cool to the touch, the darkness around its clawed hands feeling strangely comforting.
In the next moment, it raised a clawed hand and stabbed him through the shoulder.
Morgan inwardly shuddered, nearly blacking out from the pain.
" Well, that was a little unexpected," Sarenus said nonchalantly, with a hint of amusement in his voice.
" It stabbed me! Morgan yelled.
"Oh, relax, it’s just a little stab wound, it’ll heal quickly enough. Focus. You realise if it wanted you dead, it would have attempted something much worse than the little prick it gave you. "
Morgan friended, slightly contemplating Sarenus’ words.
" That actually...makes sense..."
Despite the immense strength contained in the Veliscera’s frame, the gigantic creature held onto him with seeming delicateness in its grasp.
In the next moment, it slowly raised its clawed hand, piercing it through its chest.
Morgan gasped at it in surprise.
And what is it even doing?"
At the same time, a strange heat coursed throughout his entire body.
" What is this..."
The accumulated fatigue lessened slightly.
Sarenus scoffed, mentally shaking his head.
" Well, at least I was right."
In the next moment, the veliscera gently set him down, and Morgan regained control over his limbs.
He instinctively staggered back, grasping his injured shoulder.
" What the...it’s already healed? How is this even possible?"
" What the hell is happening right now?"
In the next moment, the Veliscera’s powerful presence diminished then it fell to one knee before him.
" In case you haven’t yet realised what is happening, it seems this...creature is acknowledging you as its master." Sarenus nonchalantly said.
Morgan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
" What the hell?!"
