Chapter 167: Null Codex

‎"You know, you should let it out." Morgan said with a casual shrug, nonchalantly rubbing his jaw.

‎Talia stared at him in stunned silence, her expression turning to one of shock.

‎Morgan nonchalantly rotated his jaw, rolling his neck.

‎While the bruise disappeared almost as fast as it appeared, the pain was still there, already fading away.

‎"This girl has got it out for you, huh," Sarenus muttered in his mind.

‎"Yep, Talia Varas, she’s really interested in the Thanes from what I can tell. An unhealthy sort of interest..."

‎Sarenus whistled, laughing slightly.

Unhealthy...you don’t say..."

‎"Hey keep it down will you..."Morgan murmured seriously.

‎Talia raised an eyebrow in confusion.

‎"Keep it down?"

‎Morgan rolled his eyes, shaking his head slightly.

‎This whole mental talk thing was going to take some getting used to.

‎"I wasn’t talking to you..."

"With your permission my Lord, I can deal with this annoyance..."

" Quiet, Kazarax. No one will be dealing with anyone today!"

Talia took a step back, her eyes narrowing in confusion.

"Who are you talking to?"

Morgan smiled.

" No one..."

Walking past her, he muttered under his breath.

"No one here at least..."

‎Talia snarled stepping back.

‎Morgan turned observed the blonde scion for a brief moment then sighed, walking away.

‎From the short time he’d spent at the academy, Talia Varas had never seemed like the jealous type.

‎While it’d been obvious that she was somehow interested in getting to know more about the Thane family’s abilities, this was... bordering on fanatical.

‎From what he knew about the Varas, their most remarkable trait was their outstanding achievements in the knowledge of medicine.

‎A field in which they were of great reknown even in the Brotherhood.

‎Of course, despite working together in

‎"You need to relax Talia... "Lucian muttered.

‎Taking a step back, she shoved back Morgan, pointing at him.

‎"Relax?! Don’t the rest of you see this? There’s no way any of this is normal."

‎"You’re definitely right about that, Talia,"Emily spoke.

‎Morgan turned to her, surprise flashing through his eyes.

‎"Where is this going..."

‎"Stepping forward Emily continued speaking.

‎"None of us are normal. Do you think there is a normal thirteen year old doing the things that we do? Being an assassin or a Talented, the moment you’re born into this world you throw normalcy it the window. "

‎Her green eyes blazed to life, gleaming in the darkness with ethereal light.

‎" I’m a Talented and while I might not understand everything about the Great Houses of the Brotherhood, none of us is here going out of a way to probe you about your powers and whatever secrets your family might have... "

‎Lucian smirked crossing his arms across his chest.

‎" She has got a point you know," he said, with a playful grin.

‎" You’re going to take her side in this Ash?"

‎Lucian shrugged.

‎"So we’re now on a first name basis Varas?"

‎ Shaking his head slightly, he nodded.

‎"Yes, I’ll take her side in this."

‎Talia sneered.

‎"You Ash bastards were always two faced. Council regulations dictate that such...anomalies should be reported."

‎Cassius frowned his gaze shifting between the three scions

‎" What the hell is going on here?"

‎Samantha shook her head, watching the back and forth in a stunned disbelief.

‎"And what council, pray tell are you even going to report him to?" Lucian scoffed.

‎"Last I checked we’re in the middle of nowhere, in a city filled with spectral wraiths. And this guy saved your life. "

‎Lucian’s face darkened , his voice dripping with spite.

‎" Typical Varas..."

‎A palpable rift developed within the group.

With Talia to be exact.

The blonde girl decidedly kept her distance from the rest of them.

‎And when night fell, the veliscera never came.

‎" Aren’t you going to ask me how I did it?" Morgan asked Lucian.

Lucian stared at Morgan for a few moments, studying him.

Of course, he was curious.

After all, Morgan accomplished something that no initiate had accomplished in the history of the Brotherhood.

He’d singlehandedly taken on a horde of veliscera alone, something that wasn’t supposed to be possible.

Despite the fact that Tenebris had been discovered earlier on, there wasn’t much concrete knowledge about the monsters and their power levels.

‎Lucian threw his head back and laughed.

‎"I don’t see any reason to. I know you saved my life last night and I’m grateful for that. What you choose to tell me is your business and yours business only..."

‎Morgan smiled then leaned back.

The veliscera were truly gone and with the fog gone Azaroth lay before them in all of it’s magnificence.

Despite Lucian’s confidence in Morgan,, deep down he also felt a slight fear knowing that the youth next to uin had accomplished an essentially impossible feat.

From various encounters with obscure beings in Tenebris, the Brotherhood developed a codex of sorts, the Null Codex categorizing each creature according to it’s threat level.

The creatures they’d encountered so far were most likely common monsters, the Kravenar, the Bretnar and even the mysterious three eyed wolf.

The Null Codex classified them as Lesser Abberations.

Lesser Abberations were individually weak, at least for an assassin that had mastered the use of umbralis and was proficient in wieiding it.

Their greatest threat lay in numbers. Lesser Abberations would overwhelm even an incredibly strong assassin if they had the advantage of numbers

The veliscera on the other hand with their unnatural powers were most definitely in the second tier of the Codex.

The second tier contained Tenebris creatures that worked strange powers born from the use of umbralis and other strange energies.

These creatures we’re usually intelligent it semi intelligent.

From Lucian’s assessment the Bretnar king probably had the ability to temporarily change tirer becoming a Dreadform.

Dreadforms we’re usually handled by apprentices and novices. But in some very rare cases, a misclassification could occurcabd in such cases the end result was usually horrific.

And that was precisely what made Morgan’s feat all the more terrifying.

Such a feat was not supposed to be possible and yet somehow, the geir of Thane had done it.

Lucian knew for a fact that if their positions had been reversed he’d been undoubtedly dead.

But here he was , seated just next to him, languishing with a carefree smile on the ground.

The third category were creatures with intelligence so insidious they actually possessed the ability to move between Earth and Tenebris.

These creatures could breach the barrier between workds like maestros, at will.

The Brotherhood’s encounters with creatures of such a calibre were very few.

On the few cases ever recorded where the Calamities had managed to breach the barrier the losses had been catastrophic.

Of course, with the far reaching influence the Council of Assassins the incidents had been passed off as terrorist bombings, industrial accidents, and often entire twins were wiped off the face of the Earth.

The Brotherhood’s brass’s theorized that several more levels existed above Calamity class Tenebrian monsters but they’d yet encountered any.

A truly fortunate thing.

Letting out a sigh, Lucian took off his glasses and lay down.

"I’ve noticed a somewhat unsettling pattern."

Morgan nodded turning his attention to him.

" What’s up?"

" These creatures we’re fighting...seem to be getting incredibly stronger the further we advance..."

Everyone’s attention tuened to him, the rest of the conversations dying out.

"When I first came here, the monster we encountered was probably a lesser Abberation..."

Shrugging slightly, he continued speaking.

" Next thing, it was the Bretnar...lesser Abberations but slightly much weaker but, there was the Bretnar King... which i suspect was on the threshold between lesser abberation and Dreadform.

" These classifications, Emily asked curiously, what are they?"

" It’s grouping of Tenebrian creatures that the Council of Assassins developed," Talia muttered quietly.

"Speaking again now, huh Talia..."

Talia scoffed, her face flushing slightly.

Grinning, Lucian nodded.

" She’s quite right about that. Over the years the council came up with different categories for the creatures that assassins have encountered here."

Shrugging, he sat up right.

" It’s only natural the Talented wouldn’t know. Afterall, if I’m right, this is the first time any Talented has made it into this place but then again who knows, so s truly surprising things have happened."

Amanda fixed him with a piercing stare, gesturing for hin to continue.

" Of the crearures that we’ve encountered so far, the veliscera habe undoubtedly been the strongest, f I’m write about tjis them the velisvera are dreadforms, creatures eith some sort of intelligence rivaling or even probably surpassing that of humans.

And then the Bretnar would probably be lesser abberations. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Judging from their power level, the Bretnar thrived on numbers, they were individually weak but if they managed to corner an opponent they’d probably overwhelm them with sheer numbers."

Lucian paused allowing everything that he’d said to sink in.

"Well, that’s certainly a lot to take in," Cassius murmured, absent mindedly staring into space.

Turning back to Lucian, he leaned forward slightly.

"And what is this hunch of yours..."

Talia’s eyes widened in realization.

"If we conginue down rhis oath then we’re probably enckunter something much stronger than the Bretnar or the veliscera....a Calamity," she whispered.
