Nightmare Assault-Chapter 464: Similar
Zhao Ru looked awkward. She knew how bad her cooking was. If not for how expensive it was to eat out, she was unwilling to eat her own cooking. Strangely enough, what she considered was not that her food had been taken but how she didn’t want to embarrass herself in front of this man.
“Erm…” Zhao Ru was about to say something when she met Jiang Cheng’s anticipatory gaze. She couldn’t bring herself to reject him. She watched as Jiang Cheng grabbed her meal.
“Where are you going?” Yu Yu asked. Jiang Cheng walked ahead, looking like he was going upstairs.
“604,” Jiang Cheng answered. “I need to go back to find something. If you don’t want to come with, you can wait downstairs.”
Considering the time, Kui Yi’s group would return soon. Wang Changguo disliked Jiang Cheng. Without saying anything, he turned and left. After saying her goodbyes, Yu Yu left with Wang Changguo. Compared to newbies like Jiang Cheng, it was more reliable to stick with Kui Yi. Plus, Kui Yi’s group might return with new leads.
As they returned to the sixth-floor corridor, the oppression intensified. The sky poured. With the dim lightning, it looked like it was nighttime. The doors swayed in the wind, making horrible noises.
Jiang Cheng scanned the locked rooms. As suspicious as they were, Jiang Cheng didn’t have the plan to explore them. He noticed something strange. None of these rooms was marked. The other rooms had a sign or a paper to tell the staff what the room was for. However, the twenty rooms along this corridor didn’t even have a room number.
However, based on where they stayed, Room 604, these should be Room 620 and beyond. Something happened that caused them to be abandoned.
Jiang Cheng raised his head when they stopped before Room 604. Even though the lights weren’t the brightest, they were better than the other corridor. At least, they were not flickering. He pushed open the door. The place looked the same.
“Mr Jiang.” Du Feng rubbed his arms. “What are you looking for?” Due to the weather, the temperature plummeted.
“Nothing.”
Du Feng walked into the room and poured himself a glass of hot water. The glass radiated heat.
“Hold it to warm your hands, but don’t drink water.” Jiang Cheng warned, “It might be poisoned.”
Considering Lee Kaifeng’s death, Du Feng’s face dropped. When he looked at the glass, he felt that it was dangerous.
“What did you get from her?” Lin Wan ‘Er sat down to ask. Jiang Cheng shared his experience, but he didn’t elaborate on the details. He had the habit of not telling everything truthfully. Of course, if there were only him and Lin Wan ‘Er, things could be simpler.
“There’s a bedridden woman in Room 906.” Weiwei frowned. “And Director Qi arranged people to look after her.”
“That should be the case.” Jiang Cheng confirmed. “And this has been going on for ten years already.”
The sky suddenly thundered.
“Why didn’t Director Qi tell us about that?” Du Feng interjected. “All he knows is to urge us to find the thing and destroy it.”
Lin Wan ‘Er curled her hair and chuckled. “It sounds like Director Qi not only knows this ghost but also realises that he is the ghost’s real target.”
Through conversations with the patients, Lin Wan ‘Er found out that the hospital had never had any deaths recently. However, the patients reported that things had been strange at the hospital in recent months. Many doctors and nurses skipped work. The staff was always absent at night. Patients with some money had already transferred out. No one knew the reason. The patients asked the hospital, but the excuse was vague.
The only certainty was that Director Qi was related to this ghost. Director Qi might have caused their death. The clues were too blurry. Jiang Cheng wanted to confirm something first. As the sky darkened, Jiang Cheng glanced at the door. He stood up and told Du Feng, “Come with me.”
Jiang Cheng stood outside the door, and Du Feng stood beside him. Even though the corridor had lights, it was still dim. One would have the feeling that the darkness was moving towards oneself. Du Feng had a bad feeling.
Jiang Cheng studied the distance between the doors of two adjacent rooms. One thing had been troubling him. Based on his gait, he would use at most ten steps to move from one door to the next. However, the thing from last night used 23 steps. Plus, their gait didn’t sound normal. It sounded more like shuffling. The thought of an unknown ghost shuffling down the corridor in search of the travellers was frightening. However, that was not the main problem. It was the… shadow.
At first, Jiang Cheng thought the ghost was headless. However, he had a new suspicion.
“Mr Jiang,” Du Feng whispered, “I’m going back in. I’m… too cold.” Jiang Cheng didn’t give him the chance. He shut the door from the outside. He and Du Feng remained in the corridor. Du Feng’s face paled. Jiang Cheng told Du Feng to move backwards. Then, he mimicked the ghost and leaned against the door. “Close the lights.” He ordered the people inside the room. A few seconds later, the room darkened.
“Can you see my shadow?” Jiang Cheng asked.
“Yes.” Lin Wan ‘Er’s voice replied. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Weiwei lowered her head and glanced at the light that spilt through the bottom of the door. Two things blocked the light. They should be Jiang Cheng’s feet.
Then, Jiang Cheng squatted down. He asked, “What about now?”
“Yes.” Lin Wan ‘Er answered, “But the shadow has become larger.”
With Du Feng watching in confusion, Jiang Cheng lay flat on the ground. He turned his head, and his eyes glanced right through the bottom gap of the door. “What about now?”
Eventually, Lin Wan ‘Er responded. “Not anymore.” After a pause, she added, “Just like last night.”
