Chapter 157: Hybrid

AN: Ladies and gentleman I give you a pre-christmas gift. This is what we have all been waiting for. Happy reading.

Yu Xi froze. The suddenness of it stole his breath. Jian Ci hadn’t made a sound. There were no sounds of footsteps or a shift in the air.

One moment, the space behind him had been empty. The next, it was filled with a presence so overwhelming it felt like gravity had changed direction.

They were the same height, but in that moment, Yu Xi felt like a child staring up at a god of ruin.

Jian Ci’s eyes were souless and vacant, devoid of recognition. There were no emotion in them. Just the cold, endless hunger of something that had forgotten what it meant to be human.

Yu Xi made his move. The injector jabbed into Jian Ci’s thigh with a hiss.

But before he could press the trigger, Jian Ci’s hand clamped around his wrist.

The pain was immediate and blinding. Yu Xi gasped, his knees buckling. The grip was extremely strong—bone grinding against bone, nerves flaring white-hot. Even with his strength as a high ranking esper he couldn’t break free.

He looked up into Jian Ci’s face, searching for something, anything, behind those eyes. But there was nothing. Just an endless void.

Yu Xi’s fingers spasmed. The injector slipped from his grasp and clattered to the ground but it didn’t break. Just when Yu Xi heaved a sigh, Jian Ci stepped on it.

Yu Xi, "???"

The device shattered beneath his heel with a sickening crunch, the blue liquid flowing slowly on the ground.

Yu Xi broke free and stepped back. He cursed internally but then he recalled he had one more hidden in the lining of his jacket as a last resort. He just needed the right moment.

A snarl echoed through the cavern, then Jian Ci lunged. He came like a thunderclap.

There was no warning, no buildup, just raw, explosive motion. The cave trembled with the weight of power.

Yu Xi’s boots skidded across the stone floor as a violet blast tore past his shoulder, scorching the wall behind him.

He pivoted, emerald eyes glowing like twin stars in the dark, and raised a shimmering barrier just in time to deflect the next strike. The air between them crackled—raw, unstable, alive with psychic force.

Jian Ci stood at the far end of the cave, chest heaving, eyes ablaze with a violet light that pulsed like a second heartbeat. He didn’t see Yu Xi. Not really. What he saw was a threat, a shape to destroy, a monster in his mind’s eye. The collapse had consumed him.

He attacked again. He was a blur of motion and fury.

Yu Xi met him head-on, their powers colliding in a burst of light and sound that shook the cave to its bones. Psychic energy flared between them, emerald and violet clashing like twin storms.

Yu Xi ducked a sweeping strike, his own telekinetic push sending Jian Ci stumbling back—but only for a breath. Jian Ci recovered instantly, retaliating with a barrage of psychic lashes that tore through the air like whips of lightning. Yu Xi deflected each one, sweat beading on his brow, his focus razor-sharp.

He couldn’t afford to hit back with full force. Every move he made was measured, careful, designed to subdue without harming him. But Jian Ci had no such restraint. His attacks were brutal, relentless, driven by instinct and pain.

Yu Xi retreated, drawing Jian Ci away from the narrow passageways, trying to buy time. But the retreat only enraged him further. Jian Ci roared, psychic energy surging around him in a violent halo, and slammed Yu Xi with a telekinetic wave that sent him crashing into the cave wall.

Yu Xi groaned his vision swimming. He rolled to his feet just in time to block another strike, their powers locking in a blinding clash of light. The ground beneath them cracked.

Then Jian Ci broke through. He tackled Yu Xi to the ground, pinning him with crushing force. Yu Xi’s hand darted to his vest jacket, fingers closing around the last injector. He twisted, driving it toward Jian Ci’s side, but Jian Ci caught his wrist.

With a snarl, he ripped the injector from Yu Xi’s hand and flung it across the cave. It shattered against the stone.

Yu Xi gasped, chest heaving. "Jian Ci!" he shouted, voice raw. He was extremely livid now but what was the point of getting angry with someone who wasnt in their right mind.

But Jian Ci didn’t hear him. He couldn’t hear him. His eyes were wild, his breath ragged, his fist rising for the final blow.

Suddenly an uncontrollable surge erupted from deep within Yu Xi. Not the sharp, disciplined force of his usual psychic power, but something mysterious. Something warmer.

It poured from his core like sunlight through a broken dam—golden, radiant and alive. It wrapped around Jian Ci like a tide, not pushing, not striking, but embracing him.

Jian Ci froze, his fist hovered in the air, trembling. The violet glow in his eyes flickered and dimmed slightly. His breath hitched, caught between a growl and a gasp. For a moment, he hesitated.

Yu Xi stared up at him, stunned. He had felt this energy once before, months ago when they last kissed but it was only a flicker. But now it was here, full and unrestrained, and it was doing something. Jian Ci’s power didn’t vanish, but it stilled, like a storm pausing mid-roar.

Jian Ci’s eyes narrowed, confused. His body trembled, caught between instinct and something else, something that felt like recognition.

Instead of attacking, Jian Ci leaned down and wrapped his arms around him. Yu Xi stiffened.

The embrace was sudden, jarring in its gentleness. Jian Ci’s body, still radiating heat and psychic static, curled around him like a shield turned inward. His head tucked into the crook of Yu Xi’s neck, breath warm against his skin. It was not the grip of a predator... it was something else. Something lost. Something seeking.

Then came the nuzzle. Jian Ci pressed closer, rubbing his cheek against Yu Xi’s neck with the slow insistence of a creature desperate for comfort. Like a wounded animal trying to burrow into warmth. Like a dog begging to be patted.

Yu Xi’s heart pounded his mind reeling. He didn’t know how he knew. But he did.

The warmth that had surged from him earlier, the way Jian Ci had stilled in its presence—it wasn’t just power.
