Chapter 183: Fireball

Done, Yu Xi pushed himself up on unsteady arms. "I... I need a shower," he declared, swinging his legs off the bed.

"Where are you going? You will fall." Panic, sharp and bright, lanced through Jian Ci. "Just lie down. I will... I will wipe you down. It will cool you off."

An old memory from his childhood surfaced. Jian Ci’s mother used to wipe with a wet towel with gentle hands when he had a fever. He had clung to that memory, like a lifeline in the darkness. "Stay there. I will be back."

Yu Xi nodded, sinking back onto the mattress with a soft sigh.

Jian Ci returned with a basin of tepid water and a clean towel. He knelt again, wringing the cloth out. He started with Yu Xi’s face, wiping his forehead, his temples, then the elegant line of his jaw.

Yu Xi’s eyes fluttered closed. Jian Ci moved down. Over the column of his throat. Across the sharp collarbones. He dragged the damp towel over Yu Xi’s chest, circling one flat nipple, then the other. They tightened under the cloth. Jian Ci felt a corresponding tightness in his own gut, a low, gathering heat.

He was meticulous. He wiped down each arm, each finger. He turned his attention to Yu Xi’s stomach, the towel sliding over taut muscles that quivered at the touch. Jian Ci’s own breath was coming faster now. The room felt airless. He was so focused on his task, on the sheen of water he left on that smooth skin, that he didn’t notice at first.

But then he did. Yu Xi’s cock, trapped within the confines of his briefs, was hardening. It wasn’t subtle. The fabric strained, tenting dramatically, outlining a thick, impressive length that made Jian Ci’s mouth go slack.

A hot flush of embarrassment burned his cheeks, but it was chased by an unfamiliar feeling. He tried not to look, but it was impossible. The size and shape of it made him look again. A bolt of pure, unadulterated curiosity shot through him, so intense it was dizzying.

"Fuck," he swore realising how ridiculous his thoughts where.

Hastily, he threw the bed covers over Yu Xi’s lap, covering him. "Alright, that’s enough," he muttered, his voice rough. He moved to stand, to put distance between himself and Yu Xi.

A hand shot out. Yu Xi’s fingers wrapped around Jian Ci’s wrist, strong even in his intoxication. He pulled him hard.

Jian Ci wasn’t prepared. He lost his balance, tumbling forward. He threw his hands out to catch himself, but he was too late. He landed half on the bed, half on Yu Xi, and his lips brushed against Yu Xi’s.

It was a fleeting touch. A accident. A soft, warm, shocking press of mouth to mouth.

Jian Ci’s eyes flew wide open. The world narrowed to that single point of contact. The heat, softness and the faint taste of honey and liquor made his ears roar with static.

Yu Xi’s free hand came up, tangling in the hair at the nape of Jian Ci’s neck. He didn’t let him pull away. He held him there. And then Yu Xi’s mouth moved under his.

It was a slow, languid slide of lips that made Jian Ci’s entire body go rigid with sensation.

The static in his ears became a hum, a vibration that traveled straight to his heart making it beat hard in his chest. He should stop. He had to stop.

Jian Ci pushed himself away immediately. The soft and warm sensation of Yu Xi’s lips brushing against his, though unintentional, had sent a jolt through him. He froze, his heart hammering and his mind racing as he watched him.

Yu Xi had been drunk, his speech slurring and barely conscious. It had to be a mistake.

Jian Ci stood there, stunned, staring at the man curled up on the bed. Had he mistaken him for someone else? Was it the person he had had that tryst with during the exam? Or someone he liked? Jian Ci didn’t know and he didn’t ask. He just left the room, the ghost of that touch still burning on his lips.

For the next few days, he kept his distance. Not obviously. He was too good at playing it off. He still smiled, still joked, still showed up when he was supposed to. But something in him had pulled back.

Yu Xi did notice, but he didn’t have time to ask. Jian Rui had scheduled a series of intensive classes for him. It was classes on advanced guide theory, aura modulation, and the ethics of psychic intervention. It was a full schedule, and it would keep him away from the estate for a while.

At first, Jian Ci was relieved. Time apart would help. He could forget the awkwardness and reset. But by the third day, he was pacing the halls like a restless cat. He messaged Yu Xi twice.

CI Ci: When are you coming back?

But there was no reply so he turned to Jian Rui. At dinner, Jian Ci stabbed at his salad and asked, "When is Yu Xi coming back?"

Jian Rui didn’t even look up. "Ask him."

"I did. He didn’t reply."

Jian Wei passed Jian Rui the salad bowl. "Don’t you have a girlfriend to worry about?"

"I am talking to her," Jian Ci said defensively. "I am taking her on a date soon."

Across the table, Xiaobao let out a loud huff as she chewed. Jian Ci blinked. "What did I do now?" Xiaobao didn’t answer. She just stabbed her steak with unnecessary force.

If she hadn’t promised her brother she wouldn’t say anything, she would’ve thrown the truth in Jian Ci’s face. That it wasn’t Alarna he owed anything to. It was Yu Xi. Her brother had suffered in silence, and Jian Ci was too blind to see it. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Jian Wei, sensing the storm brewing beside him, offered, "Do you want more?"

He had to be careful. Xiaobao had been a ball of fire lately, and he knew why. She couldn’t take it out on Jian Ci, so she took it out on him.
