Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Sprinkling Dog Food Again

The woman sized up Chloe Sterling, her voice gentle. "No, you’re the beautiful one. An especially rare kind of beautiful. I’ve seen many pretty girls, but none of them compare to you."

Perhaps because the woman looked so much like her adoptive mother, a faint smile touched Chloe Sterling’s lips.

"By the way, young lady, could I ask you something?" the woman added.

"What is it?"

"Is there an exceptionally gifted girl at your school, a true prodigy when it comes to pharmaceuticals? Could you tell me her name, and where I might find her?"

Chloe Sterling was suspicious. "Why do you ask?"

"To be honest with you, my work is also in pharmaceuticals, so I was hoping to meet her."

After a few seconds, Chloe Sterling said slowly, "Sorry, I don’t know who you’re talking about."

"You don’t know?" The woman was slightly taken aback and asked in confusion, "Aren’t you a student at The Medical College?"

’Normally, everyone knows who the big names are at their own school.’

"No, I’m not a student here."

"Oh, I see." The woman’s lips curved into a smile as she said gently, "That’s all right. I’ll just ask someone else, then. Sorry to have bothered you."

Chloe Sterling gave a slight nod and walked away as the woman moved on to question someone else.

After a few steps, Chloe Sterling suddenly stopped and glanced back at the woman. It was as if she was seeing someone else’s silhouette in her, her eyes filled with a wistful longing.

But she knew this woman wasn’t her.

She slowly looked away and continued toward the roadside.

Jasper Lockwood’s car hadn’t arrived yet. A red Ferrari pulled up in front of Chloe Sterling, and Chloe Kensington stepped out, staring at her with a look of contempt on her face.

"Chloe Sterling..."

Chloe Sterling didn’t recognize her. Her eyes grew cold. "Who are you?"

"You don’t need to know who I am," Chloe Kensington sneered. "I’m just here to show you something." With that, she took her phone from her purse, opened her photo gallery, and held the screen out for Chloe Sterling to see.

"See for yourself."

Chloe Sterling lowered her gaze to the phone. The photo showed Jasper Lockwood and Phoebe Sinclair in a bar, apparently drinking together.

Only Jasper Lockwood’s chiseled profile was visible, while Phoebe Sinclair’s entire face was in view as she gazed adoringly at the man beside her.

"Satisfied? President Lockwood and Phoebe are still on excellent terms. While you were gone, they were out drinking together. Of course, they used to be even closer. If they hadn’t had a little spat—and if you hadn’t suddenly wedged your way in—they’d be together right now.

Let me give you some advice: face reality. You and President Lockwood are from two different worlds. You don’t deserve him, and the Lockwood Family would never accept a woman of your status as its matriarch. In all of Crestfall, only Phoebe is a worthy match for President Lockwood."

Chloe Sterling scoffed.

Chloe Kensington’s face fell. "What are you laughing at?" she snapped. "You don’t believe the photo?"

"It’s not like they’re in a hotel. It’s just a picture from a public place. So what?"

Suddenly, Chloe Kensington laughed again. "Right. Of course you don’t care. Women like you will put up with anything to climb the social ladder. I bet even if there were pictures of them in bed, you’d just pretend you never saw them. I guess I overlooked that.

But don’t get cocky. President Lockwood is just temporarily bewitched by your pretty face. Sooner or later, he’ll see through a woman like you and understand who’s really right for him."

Chloe Sterling glanced toward the road. Jasper Lockwood’s car was approaching.

The woman kept prattling on. "If you know what’s good for you, you’ll leave on your own. Maybe then Phoebe will let it go. Otherwise, the day President Lockwood dumps you, with no one left to protect you, things in Crestfall will get... dangerous for you."

Chloe Sterling’s expression was frosty. She couldn’t be bothered with such an imbecile.

A moment later, Jasper Lockwood’s car pulled up and slowed to a stop. Henry Chamberlain got out and said, "Madam, President Lockwood is here to pick you up."

At these words, Chloe Kensington went rigid. She whipped her head around and saw Henry Chamberlain standing outside the car and Jasper Lockwood sitting inside. The color drained from her face in terror.

’President Lockwood actually came to pick this woman up himself!’

’How is that possible?’

’How could someone as cold and aloof as him do something like this?’

’Then it hit her. Chloe Sterling must have done it on purpose. She stayed quiet, letting me run my mouth, just so she could wait for Jasper Lockwood to show up and back her up.’

’This woman is definitely going to tattle to Jasper Lockwood.’

At this thought, Chloe Kensington panicked. Knowing that discretion is the better part of valor, she shot Chloe Sterling one last vicious glare, scrambled back into her car, and sped away.

’I can’t give Chloe Sterling the chance to tattle. Besides, she doesn’t even know who I am.’

Henry Chamberlain didn’t recognize Chloe Kensington, much less realize she’d been there to cause trouble for Chloe Sterling. He watched her strange behavior, completely baffled.

Chloe Sterling then got in the car.

Jasper Lockwood didn’t normally pay attention to other women, but her behavior had been odd. It was as if she’d fled the moment she saw him.

After a moment’s thought, he asked, "Who was that?"

Chloe Sterling’s expression was cold, her tone flat. "I don’t know her."

Jasper Lockwood sensed something was off. "If you don’t know her, why was she talking to you? Was she causing trouble?"

After a moment of silence, Chloe Sterling finally said, "She just showed me a photo. Of you and Phoebe Sinclair drinking at a bar."

At her words, Jasper Lockwood’s expression darkened. He hadn’t expected her to end up seeing that picture. "I was drinking with Tristan Sinclair, not her," he said immediately. "I left the second she arrived."

Chloe Sterling slanted a glance at him. "Mm," she responded.

Jasper Lockwood frowned slightly. "You don’t believe me?"

"I do," Chloe Sterling said. "I believe you."

Jasper suddenly lifted her chin with his fingers, turning her face toward his. "But you’re still angry."

"I’m not!"

"You are!"

Chloe Sterling fell silent.

’I know Jasper doesn’t like Phoebe Sinclair, and I believe him. I’m upset because these random, meddling people keep bothering me.’

’I hate being disturbed.’

After a pause, she mimicked something Jasper Lockwood had once said. "Someone showed me a picture of my husband drinking with another woman. Am I not allowed to be angry?"

Jasper Lockwood: "..."

This was the first time he had ever heard her call him her husband.

A smile suddenly tugged at the corner of his lips, and he let out a low chuckle. "My apologies. Your husband will be more careful from now on."

Chloe Sterling: "..."

Henry Chamberlain, who was driving, had been tense just a moment ago, worried the two were about to fight. Instead, he was suddenly hit with an unexpected public display of affection.

The tips of Chloe Sterling’s ears turned pink. She pushed away the hand cupping her chin and cleared her throat. "Just as long as you’re aware."

"Then maybe you should be more careful, too. Don’t think I don’t know that Damian Rivers followed you to the countryside."

Chloe Sterling wasn’t surprised. Of course the bodyguards would have told him.

She pressed her lips together. "I’ll be more careful in the future, too."
