Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Bowing in Apology

Maya Jacobs laughed on the spot. "Never heard of the spirit pill?" she said to the woman. "Chloe knows all its effects and even its ingredients, down to the last detail. You really think she’s never heard of it? Stop trying to be the center of attention. You’re the only clown here."

The woman, of course, didn’t believe her. ’How could Chloe Sterling, a doctor from some backwater village, possibly know the ingredients of the spirit pill?’ Her laugh grew even more scornful. "She knows the spirit pill’s ingredients? She’s just lying through her teeth! Maya Jacobs, you’re top of your class. Do you really need to suck up to Chloe Sterling like this?"

Chloe Sterling suddenly smiled, her beautiful, piercing gaze fixed on the woman. "Then how about we make a bet? If I can write down the spirit pill’s ingredients, you get out of The Medical College. If I can’t, I’ll leave. Do you dare?"

The woman retorted, "And how would anyone know if what you write down is the truth?"

Chloe Sterling said, "I recall The Medical College conducted research on the spirit pill a year ago. The report, which analyzed its ingredients, is in Director Aldridge’s possession. While it can’t be made public, we can ask him to verify the accuracy of what I write. Besides, Director Aldridge is known for his impartiality. He would never help me lie."

People in the crowd began to murmur.

"That’s right. Director Aldridge personally took part in the spirit pill research last year. They said he managed to analyze its exact ingredients, which caused a huge sensation in the medical community."

"Yeah, I heard that too. If Chloe Sterling really knows the spirit pill’s exact ingredients, that would be incredible."

"She looks pretty confident. Maybe she really does know."

"Director Xavier let her into the top-secret lab. She must have some real skills."

"Exactly. Director Xavier isn’t a fool."

Seeing Chloe Sterling’s assured expression and hearing the murmurs from the crowd, the woman’s confidence began to waver.

’Even if Chloe Sterling isn’t all that great,’ she thought, ’I have to admit she’s got some skills. Otherwise, she couldn’t have fooled Director Xavier.’

"Do you dare?" Chloe Sterling asked again.

The crowd waited for the woman’s response. Her expression grew increasingly sour. She had only wanted to mock Chloe Sterling a little, but she never expected Chloe to take it so seriously!

Now she was backed into a corner.

’Of course she didn’t dare take the bet. It wouldn’t end well for her, win or lose.’

’Even if Chloe Sterling lost and had to leave The Medical College, she would have offended Director Xavier and Young Master Xavier. Her life here would be over.’

Chloe Sterling’s eyes narrowed, a cold glint in them. "If you don’t have the guts, then apologize!"

"Why should I apologize to you!" the woman retorted defiantly.

Chloe Sterling stood up, looming over the woman with a cold, domineering air. "If you don’t apologize, don’t even think about walking out of here on your own two feet today. I’m a trained fighter, and I don’t have the best temper. I’m sure you’re well aware of that."

"You..."

The woman was both furious and terrified, worried that Chloe Sterling might actually resort to violence. After a moment of internal struggle, she chose to apologize, saying through gritted teeth, "Fine, I apologize! I’m sorry! Happy now?"

"Not good enough," Chloe Sterling said coldly. "There’s no sincerity in it. And you’re not just apologizing to me."

The woman’s face flushed red, then went pale. Swallowing her pride, she stood up and gave the two of them a deep bow. "I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight and just spouted a bunch of nonsense. Please don’t hold it against me. Please forgive me."

Chloe Sterling said nothing more, glancing over at Maya Jacobs.

Maya Jacobs said, "Next time, spend more time studying your field. True skill is the only thing that gives you the right to be confident."

"I will," the woman said.

Chloe Sterling sat back down, apparently satisfied.

The woman ran off, her face flushed with shame.

The onlookers didn’t dare to gossip about Chloe Sterling anymore and quietly returned to their meals.

After a few bites of food, Maya Jacobs suddenly laughed.

Chloe Sterling looked up at her.

Maya Jacobs said, "Chloe, I suddenly feel really safe when I’m with you."

Chloe Sterling laughed. "Really? I thought I just attracted trouble."

"Of course not! This is nothing. Besides, I was the one who couldn’t stand it and fired back at her first."

Chloe Sterling said sincerely, "Maya Jacobs, thank you."

Maya Jacobs replied, "Don’t be so formal."

Esther Sterling had been waiting in the coffee shop for two hours, but there was still no sign of Chloe Sterling. Her fingers tightened around her cup, as if it were Chloe herself, and she wished she could crush it to pieces.

Just then, Miles Holt came downstairs and walked up to her. "Esther Sterling, are you playing me for a fool?" he snapped. "Where’s Chloe Sterling? Didn’t you say she would be here? That you had a way for me to take her? Well? Where is she?"

Miles Holt had never given up on his obsession with Chloe Sterling, but he was helpless against her superior fighting skills.

After Chloe Sterling had taught him a lesson last time, he had planned to bring more bodyguards to kidnap her. But then he saw an online video of her effortlessly taking down several of Cecilia Stone’s bodyguards, so he’d temporarily shelved that plan.

Today, Esther Sterling had suddenly called, telling him to come over to The Medical College. She claimed she had a way for him to take Chloe Sterling, so he had rushed right over. But after waiting for more than an hour, he hadn’t seen a single trace of her.

Esther Sterling’s face was grim. She said nothing, her fist clenched so tightly that her palm held the substance she had planned to secretly slip to Chloe Sterling.

Miles Holt sat down. "Say something!"

Esther Sterling shot him a glare, her tone equally sharp. "What’s the rush? You’ve waited this many days, what’s a little more time?"

Miles Holt scoffed. "I don’t mind waiting. The question is, can you actually get her to show up?"

"If you don’t believe me, you can leave!"

Miles Holt stared at her face, his gaze growing darker. ’Esther Sterling is very beautiful, too,’ he mused. ’A real standout, in fact. But compared to Chloe Sterling, she just isn’t as breathtaking.’

Noticing his unblinking stare, Esther Sterling’s expression shifted. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Miles Holt chuckled. "Who doesn’t enjoy looking at a beautiful woman?"

The man’s compliment only made Esther Sterling feel disgusted. ’She couldn’t stand men like Miles Holt. His family background, his character, his looks—she found every aspect of him repulsive.’

Esther Sterling sneered, "Miles Holt, you’d better get a grip. Don’t get any ideas you shouldn’t be having."

Miles Holt snorted. "Don’t worry. I prefer Chloe Sterling to you. After all, she’s much better looking."

Esther Sterling’s face turned livid. She shot to her feet. "If you’ve got the guts, then go get her! Stop sitting here talking trash!"

With that, she turned and stormed off.

Watching her retreating back, Miles Holt’s gaze darkened as an idea began to stir in his mind.

...

Chloe Sterling returned to The Lockwood Residence early that day and went straight to the study upon her arrival.

She turned on her computer, checked two emails, and after reading them, picked up her phone to make a call.

"Jean, any news about Master?"

"Nothing. Not a single trace. It’s so strange." As a top-tier hacker, Jean Kensington was usually brimming with confidence, but this case left her completely baffled.

’For someone to hide so perfectly that even she couldn’t find a single clue...’

Chloe Sterling’s fingers tightened around her phone. "How can that be?" she murmured. "Why?"

Her master had left without a sound, not even leaving behind a single word. She had been searching for him for three years, and still, there was no news at all.

’She didn’t dare let her mind wander to the worst-case scenario. Her master was so capable; surely, he hadn’t met with some disaster.’
