On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 30: Not Losing Out
Phoebe Sinclair naturally didn’t believe Chloe Sterling. Instead, she assumed Chloe must be furious—furious that she had repeatedly ruined her chances to show off.
Of course, she didn’t believe Chloe Sterling had any real talent. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been kicked out of the Sterling Family.
After all, they were both here to save the old man, and Serena Lockwood was his beloved adopted daughter. It wasn’t appropriate for them to remain standing, so Chloe Sterling said, "Please, have a seat."
’Of course, what Chloe really wanted to know was the identity of this person who had supposedly ’crossed paths with her’ and taken her ’new medicine’.’
Serena Lockwood smiled in response and took a seat to the side.
Phoebe Sinclair’s expression soured. Chloe Sterling acting like the lady of the house was a dagger to her heart. ’She’d rather stand than play along with her!’
Chloe, of course, knew what Phoebe was thinking but paid her no mind. She picked up the prescription on the table and resumed studying it.
After a moment, Henry Chamberlain approached. "Second Master."
He seemed to have something to discuss. Jasper Lockwood looked at the young woman beside him. "Chloe, excuse me for a moment."
Chloe responded, "Mm-hm."
As Jasper Lockwood left, Phoebe Sinclair’s gaze followed his retreating figure, her eyes gazing after him adoringly.
Chloe’s entire focus was on the prescription. She paid no attention to the other two in the room.
Serena Lockwood observed it all—Jasper’s tenderness and Chloe’s calm demeanor. ’A man can’t hide it when he’s truly into a woman,’ she thought. ’It was obvious Jasper was genuinely fond of Chloe.’
’And with Jasper’s power and influence now, he probably doesn’t even care about the twenty percent stake the old man holds. So he definitely didn’t marry this woman just for the shares.’
Only after Jasper’s figure had completely vanished did Phoebe Sinclair pull her gaze away. She turned to Chloe and abruptly asked, "Do you have any idea why President Lockwood married you?"
Chloe ignored her.
Phoebe pressed on. "It’s because marriage is the only way for him to get the twenty percent stake the old man holds. You’re nothing but a tool for him to get his hands on those shares."
"Phoebe!" Serena Lockwood’s expression grew stern. "We’re here to save the old man. Why are you saying such things to the young madam!"
"Aunt Rivers, I’m just telling it like it is."
Chloe let out a scoff. "So what if I’m a tool?" she said languidly. "With Jasper Lockwood’s looks and status, it’s not like I’m getting a bad deal."
Phoebe Sinclair was speechless. "...I’m not surprised to hear someone like you say that!"
Chloe suddenly looked up, her gaze as cold and sharp as a blade. "I guess it’s not surprising that someone like Miss Sinclair would be so eager to be the other woman. It’s just a bit shameless, that’s all."
Phoebe’s face turned livid. She snorted. "We’ll see how long you last in this position!"
"Phoebe!" Serena’s voice grew cold. "Stop talking such nonsense!" Then she turned to Chloe, her expression full of apology. "Young Madam, I am so sorry."
"You’ve done nothing wrong, Mrs. Rivers. There’s no need to apologize," Chloe said lightly.
Having been rebuked by Serena twice, Phoebe fell silent. ’There’s plenty of time,’ she thought. ’Just you wait!’
Just then, a cell phone rang.
"Phoebe, your phone is ringing. Is that your contact? Have they arrived?"
It was too soon for them to have arrived, but a smirk still played on Phoebe’s lips as she answered the call.
But the moment she heard the voice on the other end, her smile froze. "What did you just say?"
The man on the phone replied, "Miss, that friend you mentioned... he bolted! The moment he heard the medicine was for the Lockwood Family, he took off. Miss, do you think he might be a con artist?"
Phoebe gripped her phone, fighting back her fury. "How could this have happened?! What kind of incompetence is this?! Get him to the hospital immediately."
"The hospital?" the man on the line asked, confused. "Miss, what are you talking about?"
"Regardless, his life is the priority. Keep me updated on his condition! Okay, that’s all for now." With that, Phoebe hung up.
’That bastard! How dare he lie to me!’
"Phoebe, what happened?" Serena asked hurriedly.
Phoebe said in a grave tone, "My friend was in a car accident. He’s been rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, and I don’t know where he put the medicine."
Serena’s brows knitted together. "What? How could that happen?!"
"I don’t know either..."
Chloe’s eyes darkened as she studied Phoebe with a scrutinizing gaze. ’What kind of stunt is she trying to pull now?’
After a moment, she suddenly remembered something. She shot up from her seat, ran to the garage, and drove Jasper Lockwood’s car straight out of the old manor.
She had finally thought of a substitute herb. Chloe drove toward her own apartment. She’d never officially moved in, but she had stored some of her medicinal herbs there. One of them would work as a replacement.
When the Sterling family had first brought her back, they had arranged an apartment for her in a very remote location. But the area was quiet.
That’s why she had bought another apartment in the same complex.
Chloe parked the car, went upstairs to retrieve the herbs, and came back down a few minutes later.
A van was now parked next to her car. Chloe’s eyes dimmed when she recognized the license plate.
A moment later, a driver and Warren Sterling stepped out of the vehicle.
"What are you doing here?" Warren Sterling scoffed. "Did you come all this way looking for me? Chloe, I told you, it’s no use even if you come crying and begging. I’ve already let someone else live in this apartment, so don’t bother coming back."
Chloe coldly averted her gaze. She clicked the key fob in her hand, opened the car door, got in, and sped away, leaving a cloud of dust in her wake.
Warren Sterling: "..."
The driver: "..."
Just a moment ago, both men had been wondering how a globally-exclusive, limited-edition Rolls-Royce could possibly be parked in a modest residential complex like this.
They never in a million years would have guessed that Chloe was the one driving it!
Watching the car’s silhouette disappear into the distance, the driver murmured, "That license plate... why does it look so familiar?"
Warren Sterling shot him a sideways glance. "You know who owns that car?"
He hadn’t paid any attention to Chloe since she left the Sterling family. He had no idea what she was doing now or who she was associating with.
The driver wracked his brain but couldn’t place it. "It looks really familiar, but I just can’t remember," he said awkwardly. After a pause, he added, "But that car is a global limited edition. As far as I know, there are less than three in the entire country. The young miss... she couldn’t possibly be... working as a driver, right?"
He couldn’t think of any other explanation. Even most wealthy families didn’t own a car like that, and the top-tier families had extremely high standards for their personal chauffeurs—they would never hire a young woman.
Warren Sterling’s face clouded over. "What ’young miss’?!" he snapped. "She has nothing to do with the Sterling family anymore!"
’This unfilial daughter... Whatever she does is none of my business. I’ll just pretend I never found her in the first place!’
"Yes, President Sterling. I’ll be more careful in the future," the driver apologized hurriedly, not daring to say another word.
When Chloe returned to the Lockwood manor, Serena and Phoebe had already left.
"Sir, the madam has returned," Henry Chamberlain quickly reported to his boss.
Jasper turned. He saw a slender, graceful figure walking toward him, a sight more beautiful than any landscape in the world.
Chloe stopped in front of him and held up the herb. "I found a solution. We can prepare the antidote now."
