On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 38: Improper
Chase Langdon glanced at Chloe Sterling and answered, "Senior and junior."
Silas Coldwell: "So you’re a Pharmacist, too?"
Chase Langdon: "No, I’m a Martial Arts Coach."
Silas Coldwell sized them up, skeptical of their relationship.
"As it happens, I’m hungry too. You don’t mind if I join you, do you?"
Chloe Sterling shot back, "I do."
"President Coldwell," Chase Langdon said, "I was hoping to discuss some private matters with my junior sister today. It’s really not a good time."
Silas Coldwell said nonchalantly, "You two talk. I promise I won’t eavesdrop."
Chloe Sterling shot him a sideways glance. "Are you sure you want to eat with us? Aren’t you afraid I might poison you?"
Silas Coldwell unwrapped his utensils, a smirk playing on his lips. "Darling, I’d gladly accept a love potion from you."
’Chloe had the sudden urge to smack him over the head with her chopsticks.’
Chase Langdon frowned slightly. ’This guy is completely shameless!’
’Thinking about it, Jasper Lockwood really is the better man. He might be a bit cold, but at least he looks honorable.’
"Oh, right. I have a surprise for you," Silas Coldwell said, his expression mysterious. "But I’ll only tell you what it is after we eat. Then we can go see it together. What do you say?"
"Not a chance!" Chloe said. "I don’t like surprises."
"Are you sure?"
"I’m sure."
"Alright then." Silas picked up his phone and made a call. In a casual tone, he said, "Throw that woman, Whisper, into the city moat!"
Upon hearing this, Chloe’s expression grew alarmed, and her voice turned frigid. "Silas Coldwell!"
"What’s wrong? Didn’t you say you don’t like surprises?" 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Chloe stared at him with her dark eyes for a long moment before asking, "Did you really capture her?"
Silas Coldwell put his phone down. "What do you think?"
Chloe had no intention of guessing. She immediately grabbed her phone and dialed Jean Kensington’s number. It rang for a long time, but no one picked up.
Silas Coldwell poured himself a glass of lemonade and took a leisurely sip.
The call went unanswered. But Chloe gradually composed herself. She suddenly hung up.
Silas Coldwell said with a laugh, "Can’t get through, can you?"
Chloe laughed too. "So what? That doesn’t prove anything. If you had really captured her, you wouldn’t be here eating hot pot with me. You would’ve called me to come find you the moment you arrived in Crestfall."
Silas Coldwell burst out laughing. "Darling, you really do know me. I didn’t capture her. Because of you, I wouldn’t dream of touching one of your people."
Chloe stated flatly, "It’s because you couldn’t catch her."
"That’s where you’re wrong. There’s no one I, Silas Coldwell, can’t catch if I set my mind to it. I’m only holding back for you. Otherwise, after she’s ruined my plans time and time again, I would’ve caught her and skinned her alive by now!"
Chloe took a sip of water and ignored him.
Just then, Silas Coldwell’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen before answering. "What’s the matter?"
It was unclear what the other person said, but Silas Coldwell’s expression darkened. "Got it. I’m on my way." With that, he hung up.
He stood up and looked at Chloe, a wicked grin on his face. "Let’s do this again sometime."
Silas Coldwell strode away.
Chase Langdon watched him go, muttering, "What the hell is that guy’s deal?"
"I don’t know." Chloe picked up her chopsticks.
"He isn’t... actually into you, is he?" Chase asked, looking away from the door.
Chloe said, "He likes the medicines I create and my medical skills."
"So he still hasn’t given up on getting you to join the Nocturne Group!"
"Yeah."
Chase Langdon shook his head. "Good thing I never got serious about studying medicine. Being fought over like this seems like a real pain."
Chloe: "Funny, I seem to recall Master saying you didn’t have the talent for it."
Chase: "Same difference. Point is, I didn’t learn it."
Chloe: "...."
Just then, her phone, lying on the table, rang. It was Jean Kensington.
Chloe immediately snatched up the phone and answered. "Hello? Are you all right?"
Jean Kensington said, "I’m fine, what’s up? Did you need something when you called?"
"If you’re fine, then why didn’t you answer my call earlier?"
"I was in the middle of a huge fight with one of Coldwell’s men. I didn’t hear it ring. What’s going on?"
"Silas Coldwell is back in Crestfall. He tried to trick me into thinking he’d captured you."
"What! He dared to say that? You didn’t believe him, did you?"
"Of course not. I figured... you wouldn’t be that easy to catch."
"Damn right! Anyway, got to go. I’m going to fight this guy until dawn!"
Chloe chuckled. "All right. Bye."
"Eat up. The meat’s getting overcooked," Chase said, placing the slices of meat he’d just fished out of the pot into Chloe’s bowl.
Looking at the meat in her bowl, Chloe was suddenly reminded of eating hot pot in the countryside with her master and Chase. Their master would always give them the first pieces of meat, telling them to eat up so they would grow big and strong.
"Where do you think Master went? Why did he just leave without a word? It’s been three years without any news at all."
At her words, a hint of sadness flickered in Chase’s eyes. "I want to know why, too. But Master must have had his reasons. I’m sure he’ll come back."
Chloe nodded. "Yeah."
"Alright, let’s eat. Finish up and get home. You’re a married woman now," Chase teased.
"Jasper has a work dinner tonight. He’s not home," Chloe said.
"Oh, so that’s why you came to find me for dinner. Only because a certain someone isn’t home."
Chloe: "This meal is on me."
Chase: "I can afford one meal."
Chloe picked up her fruit juice, a slight smile on her lips. "To you, senior brother."
"Oh, stop that." Despite his words, Chase still raised his glass and clinked it against hers, an irrepressible smile playing on his lips.
By the time they finished eating, it was already past eight p.m.
Back at the entrance to the martial arts school, Chase said, "Drive safe."
"I know. It’s not like I was drinking," Chloe said as she walked over to her car.
"I mean drive slower. Don’t always drive like you’re in a race." He paused, then added, "And... even though I don’t know why you’re upset today, I still have to say something as your senior..."
"What?"
Chase looked at her, his voice soft. "Don’t let people who aren’t worth it make you sad."
’Even though Chloe hadn’t said anything, he had a good guess as to why. The only people who could affect her like that were the Sterlings.’
’He had thought she would finally be reunited with her family, but he never expected Mr. and Mrs. Sterling to be so foolish and selfish.’
"I know." Chloe gave a careless smile and opened her car door. "I’m heading out. I’ll come see you another day."
"Go on. Drive safe."
Across the street, Phoebe Sinclair sat in her car, holding up her phone and taking pictures of the pair.
The woman beside her said, "Phoebe, pictures like this are pretty meaningless, aren’t they?"
Phoebe Sinclair’s eyes narrowed. "The pictures themselves might be meaningless, but the man in them isn’t. Who knows how many men that woman was sleeping with before she married Jasper Lockwood."
The woman nodded. "That’s true. A woman from her kind of low-class background must have slept her way up. I really don’t get why President Lockwood would marry someone like her. Even if it was for the shares, a woman like that is not worthy!"
Phoebe Sinclair opened WeChat and sent the photos she had just taken to a contact. She followed up with a message: "Find out everything you can about this man, and his relationship with her."
Across the street, Chloe Sterling had already driven off. Phoebe Sinclair watched her inexpensive car go, and a smirk appeared on her face.
’This only made her more certain that their marriage was just a transaction. Otherwise, Chloe Sterling wouldn’t be driving such a shabby car.’
