On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 43: Tonight, I Want to Sleep in the Master Bedroom
The two of them got out of the car and walked into the restaurant.
It was still early, and the restaurant was nearly empty. They casually chose a private room.
Chloe Sterling felt a storm of emotions. Everyone said Jasper Lockwood was cold, ruthless, and ill-tempered, yet in the time they’d spent together, he’d never once lost his temper with her, not even when he was angry. He even took every word she said to heart.
"How did you and Silas Coldwell meet?"
The man’s voice snapped Chloe out of her daze. She froze for a second before answering, "I saved him a year ago in Country E. He was injured and had been poisoned. I was the one who treated him."
"Were you together?"
"Of course not! We were only in contact for a while when I was treating him. Then he discovered my identity and wanted me to join the Nocturne Group. I refused and returned home. That’s all there is to it."
"How long was ’a while’?"
Chloe: "...A little over two months, I suppose."
"A little over two months..." Jasper drawled. "Quite a long time."
Chloe: "He was in bad shape. He has a weak constitution, so he didn’t heal easily."
The truth was, Silas had been faking it. She had left as soon as she saw through his act.
But Jasper suddenly chuckled, seeming delighted to hear that Silas "wasn’t in good shape."
On his way back, Silas Coldwell, who was in his car, suddenly sneezed twice.
A subordinate immediately asked, "Are you alright, Boss?"
"I’m fine." Silas rubbed his nose and snorted. "It must be that bastard Jasper Lockwood cursing my name!"
「In the restaurant.」
The food had arrived, but Jasper hadn’t even touched his chopsticks.
Seeing this, Chloe asked, "Why aren’t you eating?"
"I’m not hungry." Jasper paused, then added, "I ate too much for lunch."
’He didn’t even eat lunch, how could he not be hungry?’
"Well, at least have a little," Chloe said, putting down her own chopsticks. "It’s no fun eating by myself. If you’re not eating, then I won’t either."
Jasper raised an eyebrow. "Are you threatening me?"
Chloe nodded seriously. "Yes." She paused, then added, "You’re not going to pout like a child and refuse to eat just because you’re upset, are you?"
Jasper picked up his chopsticks.
Chloe kept placing food in his bowl, as if she were afraid he wouldn’t get enough to eat.
A thoughtful look flickered in Jasper’s eyes, but he remained silent.
After dinner, they returned to the Lockwood Residence.
After they got out of the car, Jasper shot a sharp look at Henry Chamberlain, his thin lips barely moving as he spoke. "Run your mouth again, and you can say goodbye to your tongue."
Henry Chamberlain: "...Yes, sir. Understood."
Chloe was walking ahead and didn’t hear their conversation. ’Jasper said he’d settle the score with me when we got back, but what score is there to settle? There was never anything between me and Silas. I only hid my identity because of that early misunderstanding.’
’This is the first time I’ve ever been like this, with one person constantly on my mind. He’s right here next to me, yet I’m still thinking about his face, about the words he’s said.’
’This devastatingly handsome man has thrown my thoughts into utter chaos.’
Chloe quickened her steps, hurrying upstairs and into her room.
Jasper was still downstairs, instructing Henry Chamberlain, "Have someone keep an eye on Silas Coldwell. Report any movements to me immediately."
"I’ve already assigned men to watch him." After a moment’s thought, Henry added, "Sir, should we also assign men to protect the Madam? Just in case that Coldwell fellow tries to approach her again."
Jasper’s dark gaze drifted upstairs. He was silent for a long moment before finally speaking. "That won’t be necessary. Silas won’t harm her. And she doesn’t like being followed."
"Yes, sir. Understood."
After giving a few more orders, Jasper finally went upstairs.
Chloe showered, changed into her pajamas, and leaned against the headboard to video call Jean Kensington.
A moment later, a gorgeous, bewitching face appeared on the screen. She was smiling. "Darling, what’s up? To what do I owe the pleasure of this late-night call?"
Chloe got straight to the point. "I need you to keep an eye on Silas Coldwell’s recent activities. If he makes a move against the Lockwood Group, tell me immediately."
"Huh?" Jean leaned in close to the screen. "What’s going on? Does Silas know you’re with Jasper now? Is he furious? HAHAHAHAHAHA."
Chloe: "..."
"C’mon, darling, spill! Was Silas so mad he could just spit blood?"
Chloe: "You’re that happy about this?"
Jean: "Of course! When he’s unhappy, the people around him suffer. And when they suffer, I’m happy."
Chloe: "Are you talking about that hacker of his? Just what is the beef between you two?"
Jean: "It’s a big one. But don’t you worry, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for you. You’ll be the first to know if anything happens."
Chloe: "Okay."
Jean: "Right, what was Jasper’s reaction? He must have figured out you’re Lynn Chester, right? Was it a huge surprise? No, wait, knowing Silas, he must have spouted all sorts of nonsense, telling Jasper you two had a fling. Holy crap! Jasper didn’t actually believe him, did he?"
Chloe: "He wouldn’t. He’s not an idiot."
As the two were chatting, the bedroom door was suddenly pushed open, and a tall, handsome figure walked in.
Chloe froze, looking at him in confusion.
From the phone, Jean was still rambling, "...that makes sense. Jasper took over the Lockwood Group at such a young age, so he’s got to be sharp. Still, you and Silas were in contact for a while. Wouldn’t a proud, arrogant guy like him get jealous? I heard he’s cold-blooded and has a bad tem..."
"I gotta go!" Chloe blurted, quickly ending the call before Jean could finish.
But she was a beat too slow. Jasper had heard every last word.
As he drew closer, Chloe stammered, "Do you... need something?"
Jasper sat down beside her. "Don’t you have anything you want to say to me?"
At his words, Chloe was utterly baffled.
’Didn’t I already explain everything about Silas?’
Seeing her confused expression, Jasper cut straight to the chase. "You still haven’t answered my question. Why did you agree to marry me? Was it really just on a whim, with no other reason at all?"
Chloe gazed at his devastatingly handsome face, paused for a moment, and said with perfect seriousness, "Does ’because you’re handsome’ count as a reason?"
Jasper: "..."
"Uh... and to repay you for saving my life."
"Anything else?"
"..."
Jasper suddenly let out a soft sigh. "Never mind. I won’t ask anymore. We’ll take things slow."
He stopped asking why she’d agreed to marry him, whether she liked him even a little, or if she’d ever considered their future together. He would simply leave it all to time.
Sooner or later, he would get the answer he was looking for.
Jasper suddenly lay down beside Chloe.
Chloe froze, staring at him in surprise.
Jasper propped his head on his hand, his captivating eyes fixed on her as his thin lips parted. "I want to sleep in the master bedroom tonight."
Chloe clutched her phone. "Then I’ll... go to the guest room." She had just started to get up when Jasper yanked her into his arms, his voice possessive. "You’re not going anywhere."
