Chapter 87: Chapter 87: Perfectly Healthy

"Alright, let’s eat," Old Master Lockwood said with a smile.

The three of them began to eat. Chloe Sterling had only taken a few bites when Old Master Lockwood suddenly picked up a bowl, ladled some soft-shelled turtle soup for Jasper Lockwood, and placed it in front of him. "You brat, drink some soup."

Jasper Lockwood: "..."

Chloe Sterling: "..."

She had thought Jasper wouldn’t drink it, but he suddenly picked up his spoon and leisurely took a couple of sips.

Chloe froze, a flicker of astonishment in her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure.

Old Master Lockwood added, "Chloe, eat up. I had the kitchen make these specially for you—they’re all your favorite dishes. You’re not the least bit overweight, so don’t you go copying those other girls who are always on diets and starving themselves." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Chloe: "I know. Thank you, Grandpa."

Watching the pair, the old master smiled in satisfaction. He was getting more and more excited for a great-grandchild. ’With two people this good-looking, their child is bound to be even more beautiful.’

’His little great-grandchild... I wonder if he’ll get to see them by next year.’

’Oh, I can hardly wait.’

Jasper had barely taken a few sips from his bowl when the old master immediately ladled him some more. "My dear grandson, drink up."

Jasper glanced sideways at him. "Grandpa, I’m in perfect health."

Old Master Lockwood said, "I’m not saying you’re unhealthy. But even a healthy body needs nourishment. Drink up."

Jasper: "..."

Chloe ate in silence, saying nothing.

After dinner, the old master went for a walk in the garden with the young couple accompanying him. They chatted intermittently, sometimes about company matters, sometimes about everyday things.

The old man had an early bedtime, so he returned to his room to rest right after his walk.

Jasper took a phone call in the living room, so Chloe returned to their room first. Seizing the opportunity before he came in, she quickly slipped into the bathroom and locked the door.

It was only after she’d finished showering that she realized there were no towels or a bathrobe. ’They must be in the closet outside.’

Dark lines seemed to appear on Chloe’s forehead. After a moment’s hesitation, she walked to the bathroom door and called out, "Jasper... are you out there?"

About four or five seconds passed before the man’s voice answered, "Yeah, I’m here. What’s wrong?"

"There aren’t any towels or a bathrobe in here. Could you grab them for me? They should be in the closet."

"Okay."

A moment later, the sound of footsteps approached, followed by Jasper’s voice again. "I left them on the rack by the door. You can open it and grab them."

"Okay."

She heard another set of footsteps, this time moving away. Chloe gently opened the door. Jasper was nowhere in sight. A bath towel and an off-white silk nightgown were resting on the rack by the door. She quickly grabbed them and brought them inside.

When Chloe emerged from the bathroom in the nightgown, Jasper was sitting in an armchair, reading what looked like a document. His handsome, chiseled features gave him a calm and serious air.

"I’m done. Are you going to shower now?" Chloe asked.

Jasper lifted his dark eyes to look at her. He hummed in acknowledgment before setting down the file. Picking up a bathrobe from nearby, he stood and walked toward the bathroom.

Chloe looked at the large bed before her, and fragments of memory flashed through her mind, causing her cheeks to instantly burn.

It wasn’t as if they’d never slept in the same bed before. She let out a soft sigh, walked over, and slipped under the covers. After a moment, she sat up again, leaning against the headboard and scrolling through her phone.

What felt like both a long time and no time at all passed before Jasper came out of the bathroom. Chloe instinctively glanced up at him, and their eyes met.

Chloe unconsciously swallowed, remaining silent.

A bewitching smile played on Jasper’s lips as he suddenly asked, "Sleepy?"

Chloe: "...Not yet."

"Then I’ll leave the lights on. I have a few more documents to read." With that, Jasper picked up the file from the table, walked to the bed, and naturally slipped under the covers to sit beside her.

Chloe: "..."

Her phone nearly slipped from her hand.

Jasper, however, was perfectly composed. He leaned against the headboard and focused on his file.

Chloe didn’t disturb him, quietly scrolling on her phone beside him. Time ticked by, and drowsiness began to creep in. Her head eventually tilted to the side, and she fell asleep on Jasper’s shoulder.

Jasper glanced to the side. Seeing that she was asleep, he put down his file, gently shifted her down so she was lying flat, and tucked the covers around her.

He gazed at her for a long moment before turning off the light. Then he lay down and gathered her into his arms.

Chloe was a restless sleeper, constantly shifting in his arms.

Jasper’s eyes darkened, and his voice was low and raspy. "Stop moving."

But Chloe was fast asleep and couldn’t hear him. She continued to squirm in his arms, stoking a fire within him.

Jasper suddenly pulled her tight against him, his lips finding hers.

A moment later, Chloe’s eyes snapped open, and she stared in astonishment at the face just inches from her own.

As if sensing she was awake, Jasper lifted his head slightly to gaze at her. His voice was deep and husky. "You really are a restless sleeper."

Chloe: "..."

’I wonder what I did in my sleep. I didn’t actually hit him, did I?’

Her expression turning slightly awkward, she glanced at the nearby sofa. "Maybe I should sleep on the couch?" she said, starting to get up.

"Don’t," Jasper said, holding her in place. "It’s not entirely your fault, actually."

"Hm?"

"My self-control isn’t strong enough."

"..."

Chloe’s fair, slender fingers clutched the blanket. "You... this isn’t because of that turtle soup, is it?"

Jasper froze for a second, then chuckled. ’The turtle soup had nothing to do with it. She was the one who started this fire.’

"What are you laughing at?"

"I won’t drink any more turtle soup from now on."

"..."

Chloe bit her lip. "Jasper... that time I turned you down... it was because I really had something important the next day. I was worried... I’d oversleep. It wasn’t because I was trying to push you away or reject you."

By the time she finished, her face felt like it was on fire.

Jasper watched her, a flicker in his gaze. After a long moment, he said, "Just worried you’d oversleep?"

"Mhm."

Jasper was suddenly reminded of their first time together. Chloe hadn’t woken up until the following afternoon, and she had been utterly exhausted.

"I’m sorry. I didn’t know my own limits that day. I wore you out."

Chloe’s face grew even more flustered. She immediately said, "Stop talking! Don’t say it out loud!"

Jasper chuckled softly. "Alright."

Chloe lowered her gaze and said no more. The room fell quiet.

She expected him to make another move, but after a long moment, Jasper still hadn’t done anything.

’Is he blaming himself?’

’I don’t blame him, I just don’t want him to talk about it. It’s too embarrassing.’

Chloe looked up in confusion, her eyes meeting his deep gaze in the dim light. His eyes were tinged with an unreadable emotion. After a long moment, he said softly, "Go to sleep."

Chloe froze for a second. He really did seem to be blaming himself. After a moment of thought, she said softly, "Jasper, I don’t blame you."

"Mhm, I know." After a pause, the corners of Jasper’s mouth lifted in a smirk, his tone laced with a hint of teasing. "Better get to sleep early. We wouldn’t want you to oversleep and be embarrassed again."

Chloe: "..."

’I was overthinking things. He’s not blaming himself at all—he’s proud of it!’
