Chapter 127: Chapter 127: The trial (7)

"Now," the magistrate’s voice rang through the hall, crisp and commanding, "we call upon the accused to defend himself against the charges laid by the accuser."

All eyes shifted to Min‑jae as he stepped forward, posture impeccable, every inch the nobleman ready to face the court. His boots echoed sharply on the polished marble as he approached the center.

"Your honors," he began, voice steady, clear, and deliberate, "I am here to present the facts. I am Kaizar Amagi, and I stand wrongly accused of the deaths of my sister, my uncle, and my cousin."

He paused, letting the weight of the words settle. "Before I address the allegations, let us first examine the so‑called evidence. Two witnesses have testified to my presence at the scenes of these tragic events. I ask you: when exactly did they claim to have seen me commit these acts?"

He turned to the first witness, a nervous-looking man in a servant’s livery. "You claim to have seen me at my uncle’s estate on the night of his death. Pray tell, how could that be, when I had only recently returned from Abdel-Shafi, after a documented two-week stay there after the bride choosing ball?"

The man stammered, eyes flicking to the floor. "I... I—"

"Silence, until I am done.." Min‑jae said smoothly, hand raised. He shifted to the second witness, the maid. "And you.." he continued, voice calm but piercing, "claim to have observed me carrying a bag marked with evidence of this crime. I ask you, when did this occur? How could I have been in two places at once?"

He let the words hang in the air, letting the logic sink in. "Moreover, upon my return from Abdel-Shafi, countless witnesses, merchants, travelers, guards..can confirm my presence at the city gates. How, then, could I have committed these murders without detection?"

A ripple of murmurs passed through the hall. Some nobles leaned forward, curiosity piqued.

Others whispered anxiously, realizing the shaky foundation of the accusations.

Min‑jae’s gaze swept over the room, calm yet commanding. "I am charged not only with the deaths of my uncle and cousin but also with that of my sister, who had passed five months prior upon my return from Abdel-shafi. I challenge anyone here to reconcile these claims with the undeniable fact of my documented absence from Aldoria during these times."

He allowed a slight pause, letting the court absorb the contradiction. "In short.." he continued, voice rising with controlled authority, "I am accused by witnesses who misremember or fabricate, and by one who seeks to manipulate these proceedings for personal gain. I demand the truth be seen, and the falsehoods exposed."

The magistrate muttered something under his breath, flipping through the pages before looking up sharply.

"Very well, Kaizar Amagi," he said, voice measured, "present your evidence and witnesses to substantiate your claims."

Min‑jae inclined his head, the faintest smirk tugging at his lips. "Thank you, Your Honor."

He reached into the folds of his coat and drew forth a sealed letter, the royal crest of Abdel‑Shafi pressed in wax gleaming under the hall’s light.

"This," he said, handing it to the magistrate, "is an official correspondence from the royal family of Abdel‑Shafi. It confirms not only my presence in their kingdom for a period of two weeks after the ball, but also their support and acknowledgment of my travel."

The magistrate carefully examined the letter, then nodded, setting it aside.

"Next," Min‑jae continued, "I call upon the carriage driver and the transportation manager whose services I engaged over a month ago. Both can attest to my departure from Aldoria."

The two men stepped forward, bows low.

"The lord did indeed hire our carriage," the driver stated, voice firm. "He departed the kingdom on the appointed day, as agreed."

"And I oversaw the arrangements," added the transportation manager, "from payment to the scheduling. The lord left without issue, and returned only recently."

A murmur ran through the hall.

Some nobles exchanged uneasy glances. .

Others whispered, realizing the foundation of the accusations was beginning to crumble.

Min‑jae retrieved three more letters, this time from Hanan, Rashid, and Fadil...friends he had met on his journey.

"These gentlemen and lady traveled with me and can confirm my presence in Abdel‑Shafi throughout the period in question," he explained. "Their letters are sworn, and their testimony is corroborated by my travel arrangements."

"Furthermore," Min‑jae said, voice calm but with an undercurrent of sharpness, "I had barely returned from Abdel‑Shafi when I was unjustly labeled a murderer. I was forced to remain indoors, avoiding public view, as hostility rained upon me. I will call on my driver and a fellow commoner to testify.."

He snapped his fingers, and the carriage driver from that period stepped forward, along with several commoners who had been present.

"Yes," one commoner said, "fruits were thrown at the lord as he walked through the square."

"And it was the first and only time he went outside since his returned from Abdel-shafi.." the driver confirmed.

A ripple of whispers passed through the hall. Seraphine’s composure began to fray, fingers tightening around the edge of her seat.

Min‑jae’s smirk widened slightly. This was only the beginning.

"And now," he said, voice dropping to a sharper, more commanding tone, "we address the matter of my sister’s death. Who better than the one directly involved to speak the truth?"

All eyes turned as he called out, "I summon Georgina Amagi to the court!"

A hush fell across the grand hall. Seraphine’s fingers dug into her lap as her jaw tightened.

The doors swung open, and Yura stepped in, perfectly composed, every movement measured, every gesture precise, the very image of Georgiana Amagi. The hall collectively inhaled.

Min‑jae’s eyes softened for a brief moment, catching hers. "Speak truthfully.." he mouthed.

Yura’s posture straightened. She walked to the witness stand, her expression calm but resolute.

The entire hall froze, a stunned silence falling over the crowd. Whispers erupted like wildfire, spreading the shocking news.

Georgiana was alive?!

Five months had passed since her supposed death.

Yet here she stood, composed, her voice carrying an unmistakable authority despite its softness.

Heads turned, faces contorted in shock. Some gaped, others whispered furiously.

Radomir’s eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing. Seraphine’s composure faltered, a crack appearing in her armor.

Yura bowed slightly, her gaze locking onto Seraphine.

She shook her head, a quiet sigh whispering through her mind.

She was pretty... far too pretty for such evil.

She stilled herself, focusing.

Clearing her throat, she began, "Good ladies and gentlemen of the court, your... highness." Her voice trembled at first, darting to Radomir briefly. "I am here to charge Lady Seraphine with attempted murder."
