Only I Cultivate-Chapter 19: We Were Wrong
Chapter 19: We Were Wrong
Feng Fan closed his eyes, a grave mistake for an experienced fighter, but an understandable one for a rookie. Yet, the impact he expected never came.
Instead, loud bangs echoed beside him, the sound of the wooden club striking the barrier that had formed around him. Luo Li had intervened, stopping both ghosts from attacking.
"I've seen enough," she said, her voice cold and laced with irritation.
"Wu Yunru is competent. He knows how to handle himself in front of a stronger opponent without showing weakness."
Her gaze then shifted to Feng Fan, eyes narrowing in clear disapproval. "And you? You fight like an idiot. No stance, no strategy—just blind reflexes."
Feng Fan let out a bitter smile. He wanted to argue, to tell her that it was justified because he had never been trained to fight.
But no words came out.
Seeing he wasn't going to respond, Luo Li sighed before she casually crushed both ghosts into a pulp with a flick of her fingers.
"Alright, you two. Absorb your opponents to strengthen your abilities."
Wu Yunru nodded and did as instructed. He opened his mouth, and the mass of ghostly spiritual energy flowed into him.
Feng Fan froze. 'No way in hell I'm doing that.'
Unlike them, he didn't cultivate by absorbing spiritual energy directly from ghosts, so it wasn't necessary for him. But refusing might draw suspicion.
"Uh... I don't know how to do it," he lied.
Luo Li frowned. "Fine. I'll teach you tomorrow."
"Well, if you're not taking it, then I will." Wu Yunru stepped closer to Feng Fan's fallen opponent and absorbed it as well.
"Absorbing a ghost a tier higher than you is great. I can already feel a breakthrough coming," Wu Yunru said with a grin.
But something about him felt... off.
Despite his words, his eyes were bloodshot—wild, like a man teetering on the edge of insanity.
If Feng Fan didn't know him, he would think he had just escaped from a mental hospital.
"Bro... you okay?" Feng Fan asked, brows furrowed.
Before Wu Yunru could answer, Luo Li stepped in. She pulled an incense stick from her pocket, lit it, and waved it near Wu Yunru.

"Who told you to absorb both ghosts? Didn't your family teach you how dangerous it is to take in too much ghostly energy at once?"
Wu Yunru inhaled the smoke, and gradually, his bloodshot eyes began to clear. But even then, Feng Fan could tell something was still off about him.
Wu Yunru scratched the back of his head. "Sorry, I got carried away."
Luo Li put out the incense and tucked it back into her pocket. "Don't do it again. When you get home, burn another purifying incense."
Curious, Feng Fan asked, "What exactly is that incense?"
Luo Li glanced at him. "A purifying incense. It cleanses contaminated soul energy and neutralizes the corruption from ghostly energy... to an extent. As long as the damage isn't too deep, most people can use it to decontaminate themselves."
She sighed. "The SIF produces a lot of these every year, but even so, many Hunters lose themselves chasing power. Ghostly spiritual energy is necessary for us, but it's also a poison."
Feng Fan nodded, absorbing the information.
'Good thing I cultivate properly... no need to rely on corrupted energy to get stronger.'
"Alright, everything's solved. Let's go home," Luo Li said, turning to head down the stairs.
Wu Yunru followed her as if this were just routine.
"Huh? Shouldn't we do something about that family? They almost died, didn't they?"
Luo Li shook her head without stopping. "No need. Since they didn't see the ghosts, it's better not to tell them anything. Tomorrow, non-Hunter agents from SIF will check on them and make sure they aren't contaminated."
Feng Fan nodded and followed, but something still felt off. 'Those two ghosts seemed oddly familiar...'
As they descended the stairs, Feng Fan asked, "Do you guys need a ride home?"
"I'm good. I'll grab a taxi, I saw some nearby before we came in," Wu Yunru said.
"My family's driver will pick me up," Luo Li replied, pulling out her phone to send a message.
Feng Fan sighed. "Rich people really live differently..."
After parting ways with Wu Yunru and Luo Li, Feng Fan walked to the company car parked on the same street and drove home.
While driving, his mind kept replaying the events of the night, analyzing the case they had just handled.
'Two male ghosts... both used clubs... all the couples were killed with powerful blows to the head from blunt objects... and they only targeted the parents, not the children. But why?'
Then, like a hammer to the skull, realization struck him.
"Shit!" His eyes went wide.
Without hesitation, he yanked the steering wheel, making a sharp U-turn and speeding back the way he had come.
With one hand gripping the wheel, he frantically dialed Luo Li's number. But the call didn't go through.
"Dammit, Luo Li! Pick up the damn phone!"
'Those two weren't the only ghosts... One is still missing. Those ghosts resembled Daniel and Cristian Cravinhos, which means there's still one more—Suzane von Richthofen!'
Feng Fan recalled the infamous case of the girl who orchestrated her parents' murder in Brazil.
'Suzane opened the door and let the killers into the house herself... so she must have possessed the children, while the two male ghosts we took down were the ones who carried out the killings.'
His foot pressed harder on the accelerator as he ran recklessly through the streets, still trying to reach Luo Li.
'Why the hell are the ghosts in this world so similar to cases from my original world?!'
Just as Feng Fan parked the car, his phone finally connected.
On the other end, her voice was calm but slightly annoyed. "Feng Fan, I was in the shower. Why are you calling?"
"Luo Li, hurry up and get back here!" he said in a hurry.
"There weren't just two of them! We were wrong—there's a third ghost!" he said urgently, already sprinting toward the building.
Without waiting for a response, he hung up and gritted his teeth as he rushed up the stairs.
'I won't let another child be orphaned tonight!'
