The anticipated scenario where the mechanical doppelganger should have acted upon the activation words did not appear. Looking at the doppelganger still standing motionless, Pei Yan frowned and circled around it twice, unable to figure out where the problem lay.
Just when he was disheartened and about to dismantle the mechanical materials for re-evaluation, the mechanical doppelganger, modified by Li Songtao, suddenly opened its eyes. After swaying back and forth a few times, it responded with Suzi's voice, "Modification complete, activation successful, please issue new commands, master!"
"It worked! Great! OK, OK, fantastic! Let me think, let me think!" Seeing the doppelganger finally react, Pei Yan, who had half extended his hand, withdrew it, and in excitement circled the doppelganger twice, then mumbled to himself, "Sister, this should be regarded as a success, right? What can this mechanical doppelganger possibly achieve?"
"It shares your same essence and has replicated your abilities! Except for the enhancements from your bloodline, like the power of Blood Fiend and the Demon Race transformation, which it can't perform, it can execute most other abilities. Furthermore, with your wind-based ability as an enhancement, it can further bolster the ice-based magic inherited from Li Songtao."
Upon hearing Lin Junzhao's explanation, Pei Yan was quite surprised and said, "So powerful, isn't it stronger than me?" 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
"What are you thinking? A replica is just a replica, although it can manifest your abilities, it's ultimately not you. This mechanical doppelganger can at most exert sixty percent of your ability strength."
"Sixty percent, sixty percent." Pei Yan kept murmuring this number to himself, satisfied with such an outcome given the amount of materials invested. Thinking of this, he looked up at the mechanical doppelganger and commanded, "Now, execute my abilities one by one! Spar with me!"
Two hours later, when Pei Yan emerged from the parallel space with Elder Lin's support, filled with fatigue and joy, he found his room somehow crowded with people. Gu Shenghui, relieved to see the two appear, came up to meet them and asked, "Where did you guys go?"
"Elder Lin, help me develop my new ability. Has something happened?" Pei Yan, disheveled after a long battle, slumped into a chair and asked in return.
"Do you know how long you've been cultivating? Fourteen full hours, and during that time, a major event occurred in the city!"
"What major event?" Pei Yan knew that Gu Shenghui was not one to exaggerate. The transformation of the doppelganger in the parallel world made him overlook the passage of time, but he couldn't fathom what major event could happen in just these ten hours or so.
"The first thing is that shortly after you and Elder Lin disappeared, the Underworld's Academy of Eighteen with Divine Desire and the Dark Council, alongside the Rebel Dragon Race, jointly launched an assault on the Celestial Prison within the city, attempting to rescue Suhabaru!"
"What!" Pei Yan, upon hearing this, exchanged glances with Elder Lin. They entered the parallel space not long before, which should have been over five hours ago, right after Candle Dragon showcased its power to Lin Ruxue and turned around to stage a surprise attack.
"Did they succeed?" Coming back from the shock, Pei Yan hurriedly asked.
Gu Shenghui shook his head, and Mei Simiao interjected, "No, the current situation is unclear. From the intelligence I've gathered during my investigation, although the Underworld's raid took the opposing side by surprise, the Celestial Prison is, after all, within the Immortal Palace's stronghold. Apart from causing significant initial damage, they couldn't penetrate deep into the Celestial Prison before being repelled by reinforcements. These people weren't at a loss and retreated immediately upon the arrival of reinforcements. By the time I arrived, the Immortal Palace was already cleaning up the battlefield and pursuing the remnants."
Pei Yan nodded upon hearing this, and poured himself a cup of water from the kettle on the table, smiling, "That is indeed as expected. I just didn't think Suhabaru was so important to them? They took such a huge risk under such pressure to attempt a jailbreak. He must have lots of important secrets on him. In hindsight, we probably should have insisted on taking him for interrogation."
"You should be grateful you didn't. Otherwise, we might have been the ones attacked and suffered losses, and instead, it's the Immortal Palace that ends up the unlucky one, losing both battles and men. Suhabaru is dead."
"Pfft! Cough cough cough – what did you say?" After hearing Gu Shenghui's words, Pei Yan spewed the tea and, after a bout of coughing, stared in shock at his counterpart, "Weren't they repelled? How did he end up dead?"
Gu Shenghui pulled out a tissue from the table, leisurely wiping the water off himself, and said helplessly, "Who knows? It is said that when the Underworld attacked, everyone in the Celestial Prison was too flustered to care for a prisoner who was too wounded to move. By the time they drove back the enemy and returned to check, they found he had already died. What really caused his death hasn't been concluded yet."
"Hehe, this Immortal Palace sure is deep waters! Making them allies and to fight alongside in the future? Oh my, we might not even know how we died if the time comes." Pei Yan said, shaking his head with a cold smile, then looked at Gu Shenghui and continued to ask, "You just mentioned the first event, so Suhabaru's death is the second event."
"No, the attack on Celestial Prison was the first event. As for the second event? It just happened and is ongoing; someone is attacking the Immortal Palace's location right now."
"Uh…." Pei Yan gaped, speechless for a moment. He merely went to modify some fragments, and during that short absence, such major events occurred. After a long while, he regained his sense and nervously said, "Is this the final battle starting earlier than expected? Shouldn't we be doing something instead of just sitting here?"
"What do you intend to do? Didn't you just mention that fighting alongside the Immortal Palace means not knowing how we would die? Why help them?" Jiang Feiyang, tucked in a corner within Pei Yan's room, replied disgruntledly.
"True as that may be, didn't Gu Chu analyze it before? Right now, we're like locusts on the same rope; if they fall, it's only effective for us to stop the Divine Desire's conspiracy in other dimensions to ensure our world remains unharmed." Pei Yan glanced at the others present, puzzled at their hesitant attitude—a divergence from the usual perceptive, broad-minded individuals.
"It's not about whether you want to help; it's that they won't let us help!" Mei Simiao picked up where Jiang Feiyang left off to clarify for Pei Yan, "Just shortly after blocking the assault on Celestial Prison, a series of explosions sounded from the direction of the Immortal Palace. Following this, the world seemed to change colors. The constant immortal clouds and music that shrouded the Immortal Palace vanished, replaced by dense ominous clouds amid ghostly wailings. I intended to stay outside to investigate what transpired but soon a large troop of Immortal Palace enforcers emerged on the streets. These individuals precisely identified me and escorted me back here. Upon confirming our attendance and invitation lists, they informed us that the entire city is under lockdown. We're ordered to remain at our residences awaiting orders, not stepping out a single foot, or we'll be considered traitors and killed without mercy."
