Otherworldly Affairs Office-Chapter 95: Being Monitored
Chapter 95: Chapter 95: Being Monitored
Half a month after the Spring Festival, Pei Yan, accompanied by Wang Wenze, painstakingly went through rehabilitation. He had lain in bed for a whole week, sustained only by nutrient solutions, and after waking up, it took him four more days to be able to walk on the ground.
As Elder Lin had said, the mental trauma this time had severely damaged Pei Yan. When he initially woke up, he even thought he had become a vegetable, with his body completely out of his control.
Even after continuous treatment and nursing by Elder Lin and several psychic ability practitioners, there were still occasional uncontrollable twitches. He often felt so shaky while eating and needed support just to go to the bathroom, which made Pei Yan feel unprecedented shame and deepening hatred.
Wang Wenze stood in front of the treadmill, looking at Pei Yan, whose face was pale as he gritted his teeth while jogging, and kindly advised, "Hey, is your mood any better? My goodness! How many days has it been with that grim face?"
"If you were in my place, you wouldn’t feel any better either!" Pei Yan replied, panting and wiping the sweat from his forehead with a towel, "Damn it, I’ll settle this score sooner or later."
Wang Wenze whispered as he leaned on the front of the treadmill, "Who could have known such a big thing would happen during the Spring Festival? If I had known it would be this eventful, I wouldn’t have gone to celebrate the New Year. When I came back, the entire Investigation Bureau was in chaos!"
Pei Yan gritted his teeth and continued running, not responding to Wang Wenze’s words. He was right; the Investigation Bureau was indeed in turmoil. After that night, a large number of investigators moved in and screened all the bureau personnel.
The key targets of the screening were the personnel who stayed behind and didn’t leave the bureau that day. Since Hu Wenjun’s invitation to Pei Yan was spontaneous, and neither of them notified others, the leak could only have been by those who remained in the bureau.
Because of this, Pei Yan’s friends narrowly avoided the disaster, as they had left the bureau earlier than Pei Yan. Nevertheless, they were still called in for questioning and debriefing for half the day.
Even Hu Wenjun, one of the victims who was also a target of the attack, couldn’t escape the inspection. After returning to the bureau on the fifth day of the New Year, he was called in for interviews with the investigation team, and Pei Yan hadn’t seen him since.
This made Pei Yan feel very uncomfortable, as if he were a jinx. Although Captain Hu had good intentions, he got involved because of Pei Yan. Upon waking and learning of this, Pei Yan immediately protested to Elder Lin, but the latter was also helpless. This was the bureau’s procedure that no one could defy, but at the same time, Elder Lin promised him the Investigation Bureau would conduct a fair investigation and clear Captain Hu’s name if he was innocent.
While Pei Yan continued to jog in silence, the gym door opened, and Xia Yu, Liang Qian, and Ye Jiumu entered together.
To Pei Yan’s surprise, Ye Jiumu stayed by the door and didn’t come in. Only the two girls approached Pei Yan and exchanged pleasantries. Xia Yu then straightforwardly asked, "Pei Yan, what exactly happened that night?"
"When you guys came back to see me, didn’t I explain everything?" Pei Yan answered while holding his side and jogging.
Liang Qian glanced around, pushed Wang Wenze away from the treadmill, and whispered, "We’re asking what happened after you returned from Captain Hu’s house."
"I can’t say! Elder Lin explicitly ordered me not to. If I do, you’ll all get dragged into it," Pei Yan said, getting off the treadmill with his hands on his knees, panting.
Xia Yu crouched in front of Pei Yan, anxiously asking, "But what’s this got to do with Jiumu anyway? He’s been detained and hasn’t been released. Jiang Feiyang, Shangxing, and Wenlin haven’t come out either!"
"Jiumu, Jiumu isn’t at..... oh!" Pei Yan exclaimed, suddenly realizing, and pointed to the door for a clearer look, only to find it was Jiumu’s twin brother Ruozai.
Pondering this, Pei Yan scratched his head and sat on a nearby chair. The trio surrounded him while Wang Wenze muttered, "Pei Yan, don’t you trust us?"
"How could I not! I’m not someone who doubts everything after a setback. Elder Lin instructed me many times not to speak about this. My hands are tied, and besides....." Pei Yan paused, looking at Xia Yu, "I really don’t know what this has to do with Jiumu. That night was chaotic and my mind wasn’t focused. I only know that before I passed out, I hadn’t seen Jiumu, and when I woke up, I didn’t notice whether he was there or not."
"That aligns, then. Ruozai said his brother was called away from home at the last minute," Liang Qian whispered as she leaned in.
Xia Yu then held Pei Yan’s hand, pleading earnestly, "Pei Yan, please tell us what happened. We’re worried sick right now. You have no idea how many people are being taken away from the bureau every day."
"Is it that serious?" Pei Yan asked in shock, stopping midway while wiping his head with a towel.
"Yeah!" Liang Qian leaned in and whispered, "In just a couple of days, they’ve arrested seven administrative staff and five from the Daoist Magic Department’s operational team. I’ve heard a rumor that the information about you and Captain Hu leaving the Investigation Bureau together that day was leaked by one of the staff responsible for monitoring Teleportation Array transmissions. He tried to cover it up, but the bureau’s reaction was so swift that he panicked and was caught when he tried to flee. They also leaked the file with you and Captain Hu’s home address."
"Yes, and I’ve heard he sold just that piece of information for over three million. Pei Yan, you surely are valuable," Wang Wenze joked, patting Pei Yan on the thigh.
Pei Yan chuckled bitterly, tossing the towel aside and mocked himself, "I didn’t know my worth before, but I know now. Damn it, I’ll earn my money myself from now on. Brother Wang, you sell the info, and however much money you make, dig a pit for whoever you can."
Wang Wenze gave a thumbs-up, agreeing deeply, "You’re a true brother, thinking of your Brother Wang during crucial moments!"
"Alright, let’s stop joking and get serious. Pei Yan, you know what we’re worried about, right? Half the people we know are locked up right now. How can we not be anxious! Please just tell us. We swear not to leak it, and if anything comes of it, we’ll take responsibility!" Xia Yu pleaded, looking at Pei Yan earnestly.
Pei Yan looked at this strong woman showing such vulnerability for the first time, then at Ye Ruozai, waiting anxiously at the door. He shook his head helplessly, "I’m sorry, I can’t tell you. I really can’t."
Though he said this, he snapped his fingers in the air and gestured like making a phone call near his ear.
The trio’s expressions turned despondent at his words, but after seeing his phone gesture, they were puzzled. Just as Liang Qian was about to ask, the quick-witted Wang Wenze covered her mouth.
He extended his arm, and under the trio’s gaze, tattooed letters suddenly appeared: Bugged?
It was Pei Yan’s first time witnessing Wang Wenze using his abilities, and while suppressing his amazement, he nodded in acknowledgment.
"Well then, since that’s the case, we won’t force you." Wang Wenze said regretfully, though his arm displayed different letters: What now?
"I’m truly sorry. My hands are tied since Elder Lin emphasized it multiple times," Pei Yan also replied regretfully. Then, without making a sound, he exaggeratedly mouthed words.
The three deciphered his words from his mouthed movements.
Give me the phone!
