Nora Scott followed the direction Pedro Langley gave to find the car parked on the roadside. As she got closer, she saw him leisurely seated in the back seat, his right arm lazily resting on the window ledge.
"Sleep yourself to death."
Approaching the back door of the car, Nora reached in and playfully tousled Pedro’s handsome face.
Pedro chuckled casually, held her hand, and said with a smile, "My lady performed so excellently, I wanted to see you first thing."
"Smooth talker."
Nora smiled wryly, lightly flicking her fingers against his forehead.
Pedro released her, pulled the car door open, and scooted over, saying, "Please, my lady, get in."
Nora bent down to get in, and once the door closed, she snuggled into Pedro’s arms.
"I’m exhausted."
Burying her face in Pedro’s embrace, Nora rubbed her cheek against him, not minding leaving her makeup on.
Pedro didn’t mind either, holding her close and instructed the driver, "To Virtue Retreat." He then cuddled with Nora, and soon they both drifted off to sleep leaning on each other.
*
It was still early, and Virtue Retreat wasn’t open yet, but the door was already ajar upon their arrival.
Just like Tofu Shop in Anchel, Humphrey Jennings was standing by the doorway with a cigarette dangling from his lips, one arm folded, his gaze fixed on Long Street outside.
But—
What awaited him were Nora Scott and Pedro Langley stepping out of the car, hand in hand.
"Tsk." Benjamin Durant sauntered over to Humphrey’s side, hands in pockets, glanced outside, furrowing his brows, and remarked in a resigned tone, "Aren’t those two sickeningly lovey-dovey."
Ever since meeting Pedro Langley in Anchel, he’s seen Nora and Pedro practically glued to each other, always sweet and loving. Other couples might have their squabbles, but these two seemed never to fight, always openly displaying their affection, irritatingly so.
Hearing Benjamin’s sarcastic comment, Humphrey silently gave him a look.
Benjamin shrugged, "I wonder where Boss Alex has been lurking lately. Maybe you should patch things up with him and team up to shake up this brat."
Humphrey: "..."
His attitude toward Boss Alex was the same as toward Pedro Langley; they just didn’t vibe with him.
"Who’re you planning to mess with so early in the morning?"
A laid-back voice floated over, clear but carrying a hint of chill.
Benjamin instinctively shivered, feeling a bit intimidated, but after giving Nora a sheepish smile, he replied, "Just talking about a pretty boy." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
The blatant insinuation wasn’t lost on Nora, who cast a cold glance his way.
Benjamin made a zipping gesture over his mouth.
Nora snorted lightly, glanced at both of them, and asked, "What are you two doing here?"
She had only told them to prepare breakfast at Virtue Retreat, not for them to be here at the crack of dawn to serve her breakfast.
"Once you say the word, how can we not show up?" Benjamin shot a sneaky look at Pedro, grinning, "Humphrey insisted on making tofu pudding himself for you, said you once claimed someone’s breakfast was inedible."
"..."
Pedro gave Nora a faint glance.
Nora coughed lightly, brushing her nose with her finger, avoiding Pedro’s gaze, then smiled slyly at Benjamin, "Getting bolder, are we, trying to stir things up in front of me?"
She gave Humphrey a knowing look.
At that moment, as if on cue, Humphrey stubbed out his cigarette and snagged Benjamin by the neck, dragging him straight to the back kitchen on the first floor.
Not until they reached the kitchen did Humphrey release Benjamin.
Gasping for breath, Benjamin quickly inhaled fresh air, rubbing his neck, "What’s with you? Don’t waste a perfect opportunity. If those two had a fight, wouldn’t it make this morning a bit more interesting?"
Humphrey shot him a cold glare, "Seems like you need a beating."
As Nora’s junior apprentice, not only did he show no hope for her, but he also dared to blatantly disrupt her relationship with her boyfriend... If his master found out, he’d toss him into the Yellow River for sure.
"I’m doing it for your own good!"
Benjamin retorted, stretching his neck indignantly.
"None of your business."
Humphrey snapped back irritably.
Benjamin: "..."
*
After Benjamin and Humphrey left, Nora could feel a penetrating gaze on the back of her head. Resisting the urge to look back, she walked on alone.
Pedro was following closely behind.
Nora found a spot and had just pulled out a chair when a voice came from beside her ear, "Inedible?"
"..."
Nora’s mind went blank for a moment.
"Nora, let’s be honest, is this how you stab me in the back, cutting me metaphorically, plunging the blade straight to my heart..."
Pedro held onto her wrist.
Nora sighed, feeling a bit defeated, "He’s just a loose cannon; he always exaggerates."
"Oh?" Pedro narrowed his eyes, "So what do you say about me when I’m not around?"
Turning sideways to meet Pedro’s gaze, Nora answered seriously, "Just the truth."
"..."
"Really not tasty."
Pedro: "..."
That was a straightforward jab.
Scratching her nose, Nora regained her composure, laughing at him, "I specifically ordered Yangchun Noodles for you. Curious about Jennings’ culinary skills?"
"Spoiling you,"
Pedro twitched the corner of his mouth, poking her forehead lightly.
Nora didn’t fight back, casually shrugged, "You’re not a professional chef, why care so much?"
"..."
All the tension and discomfort were effortlessly eased by Nora’s nonchalant words.
Although slightly offbeat... but, Nora had a point.
