Chapter 168: Chapter 168: The Lucky Farmer is at Ease, While the Husband with No Heirs is Busy Pursuing His Wife 28

“The snow engulfs the heavens, I’ll accompany you for a while,” said the young nobleman in a brocade robe, holding an umbrella as he walked up to shield both his and Su Zhiruan’s heads.

The large flakes of snow fell suddenly; within moments, a fine layer of white granules had covered the ground. Su Zhiruan looked up at him and seeing the striking resemblance he bore to Fu Huaichu, she quickly accepted, “Thank you, young master, for your kindness. My carriage is by the entrance to West City.”

“Let’s go.” He watched silently as she wrapped her black cloak tightly around herself, the turquoise against the backdrop of falling snow like splashes of green plum blossoms, captivating to behold. The nobleman in the brocade robe withdrew his gaze and walked alongside her, seemingly casual as he sought conversation, “A moment ago, you mentioned that I resemble someone you know?”

Su Zhiruan nodded, “He might be a bit older than you, with a seven or eight parts resemblance.”

The young nobleman thought for a moment and then, leaning towards her as they walked, said, “My elder brother looks quite similar to me, perhaps seven or eight parts. Maybe you know him.”

This was a comment off the cuff, but a flicker crossed Su Zhiruan’s brow—

This gentleman has an elder brother and looks seven or eight parts like Fu Huaichu…

“May I ask for the young master’s full name?”

“Fu Huaizhong. I am the second brother in my family.” After Fu Huaizhong finished speaking, he glanced at Su Zhiruan, noticing her slight daze. He couldn’t help but smile, freely and comfortably, as he adjusted the umbrella to cover the other side of her shoulder, “Now that we know each other’s names, we can be friends.”

Su Zhiruan felt somewhat helpless inside. She hadn’t expected such an encounter, especially not with Fu Huaichu’s brother, Fu Huaizhong.

She stopped in her tracks, feeling the necessity of propriety, curtsied and said, “It’s a pleasure to meet the Third Prince.”

“Why the formalities all of a sudden?” Fu Huaizhong had one hand on the handle of the umbrella while the other hurriedly reached out to her shoulder, trying to help her up, “I said we’re friends—”

He cut off mid-sentence.

Fu Huaizhong’s gaze shifted towards the distance, and Su Zhiruan also looked in the direction he beheld.

In the midst of the wind and snow, Fu Huaichu was clad in a Black Cloak, half of his ink-black hair bound, his gaze dark and obscure. The pronounced veins of his hands were visible as he stood holding an umbrella, his remarkable appearance and sharp temperament were evident. The jade pendant at his waist was of considerable worth, and behind him stood a luxurious carriage.

Amidst the vast expanse of falling snow, he stood alone with his umbrella, his hair the color of night and dressed in black, his features as fine as jade, bearing at least an eight parts resemblance to the Third Prince, Fu Huaizhong. And yet, their temperaments were diametrically opposed, with Fu Huaichu being a natural-born ruler, exuding a tremendous imperial presence, whereas the younger Fu Huaizhong bore more the air of a scholar.

Uncertain how long Huaichu had been watching from the snow, his eyes were icy as if he was an Immortal banished from the heavens. He looked towards his brother, then towards Su Zhiruan, and finally, his gaze landed on Fu Huaizhong’s right hand—still resting on the delicate shoulder of Su Zhiruan.

“Elder brother?” Fu Huaizhong called out in confusion, and then, not knowing why, he felt a tinge of guilt and quickly removed his hand from Su Zhiruan’s shoulder, “How come you’re here? Did you come to pick me up?”

Through the thick snow that resembled goose feathers, Su Zhiruan looked up at Fu Huaichu, well aware that the gaze of the Crown Prince was fixed upon her, unwavering and too intense to ignore.

Fu Huaichu withdrew his gaze, his voice tinged with an icy chill like the cold wind, “Come here.”

Fu Huaizhong thought he was being called over, so he smiled apologetically at Su Zhiruan, “Miss Su, please excuse me, you keep the umbrella. The Crown Prince surely came to give me a ride home. You should head back early and be careful of the slippery road.”

“No trouble at all, my carriage is nearby. Since Crown Prince has invited you, I won’t impose any further.” Su Zhiruan curtsied, then turned to look at Fu Huaichu in the distance. She curtsied again, but she did not take the umbrella from Fu Huaizhong; instead, she trotted toward her carriage.

Although it was Fu Huaizhong’s first time meeting Su Zhiruan, it was the first time he felt such a strong fondness for a girl. He looked back repeatedly.

He did not know that behind him, the face of Fu Huaichu had darkened, as if it could drip ink, his gaze landing on his brother who seemed to have fallen into the throes of love. In a bland tone, he said, “Do I stand here waiting for you?”

Upon hearing his voice, Fu Huaizhong snapped out of his reverie. He quickly made his way to Fu Huaichu, “Elder brother, it’s a surprise you came to pick me up today.”

“Who said I was here to pick you up?” Fu Huaichu said as he followed his brother and started walking toward the carriage. An Ying trailed behind him, casting a nearly sympathetic glance at Fu Huaizhong, which left him somewhat puzzled.

An Ying watched the scene unfold, shaking his head helplessly in his mind. The Third Prince might have read too much recently, neglecting to keep up with the affairs of the Imperial Family, unaware that his brother had two children, and that Miss Su, whom he had been admiring, was in fact his future sister-in-law.

Just thinking about it made even An Ying feel sorry for the Third Prince. He wondered if upon learning the truth, he would break down in tears.

Sitting in the carriage, Fu Huaichu handed the umbrella to a servant and took a seat to drink tea.

“Besides me, whom else did you wish to pick up?” Fu Huaizhong returned to the previous topic and continued to ask, “On the road just now, it was only Miss Su and me. Could it be that you wanted to pick her up?”

“Do you know her?” asked Fu Huaichu, masking his irritation as he frowned. Seeing Fu Huaizhong now, he thought of how his hand had been on Su Zhiruan’s shoulder earlier. He felt an unpleasant sting in his heart, tinged with jealousy, but he did not let it show in front of his brother, instead subtly probing about the nature of Fu Huaizhong’s relationship with Su Zhiruan.

As soon as Su Zhiruan was mentioned, Fu Huaizhong brightened up with plenty to say, a slight flush appearing on his cheeks, “Elder brother, it was love at first sight for me.”

“Craaack—”

Fu Huaichu’s expression remained unchanged, but the teacup in his hand was crushed into two halves within a mere second. Even without a copper mirror, he knew his face and eyes must look terrible now.

“Elder brother, what’s wrong? Why did the cup suddenly break?” Fu Huaizhong startled, quickly inquired about his injury, “Elder brother, let the Imperial Physician take a look.”

“It’s nothing.” Fu Huaichu barely squeezed out the words. He placed the pieces of the cup aside, then simply wiped the blood from his hand, “Tell me how you fell in love at first sight.”

Fu Huaizhong, unable to wait to share his excitement, continued with high spirits, “I’ve never had a woman capture my heart like this before. She’s really wonderful, whether it’s her smile or her dress sense, it’s all to my liking. She’s beautiful, and even the Liuyun Gold and Jade shop is her business. I was truly thrilled after witnessing everything in the shop. Elder brother, I’m certain, I really like her.”
