Chapter 129: Chapter 131: Forced Cohabitation (Seventy-Four)

After switching off the TV, he put down the remote and stood up to go upstairs.

"Chicheng."

As Ji Chicheng walked past Lin Yanqin, she suddenly called out to him.

He stopped in his tracks and turned his head to look at her with a lethargic expression, "What do you need, sister-in-law?"

He appeared utterly disinterested in her.

Yet, Lin Yanqin still confronted him with a smile, "How is Xiangting doing at school?"

"I haven’t the time to keep track," Ji Chicheng replied indifferently, with a slight frown on his face.

His expression seemed to ask: Do you think I have that much free time?

Ignoring Lin Yanqin’s face turning green, he turned and left without looking back.

This kid had never given her any respect since he was little.

If she didn’t despise Yang Yufang and her son even more, she wouldn’t even bother looking at him in this house, yet he acted so high and mighty.

Lin Yanqin bit her lip in rage as she stared at Ji Chicheng’s cold and proud departing figure, thinking furiously that if the glass cup in her hand weren’t of good quality, it would have been crushed by now.

...

Because of last night’s incident with the television show, Ji Anning was still mortified and afraid to face Ji Chicheng. After getting up and washing up, she came downstairs and was relieved to see that Ji Chicheng was not there.

She grabbed her bag and quickly made her way to the door.

The elder was reading the newspaper on the sofa. Ji Anning stopped in front of him, "Morning, grandfather. I’m going to be late for class, so I’ll be heading out now."

After the greeting, she was ready to continue towards the door when the elder looked up at her, "Aren’t you going to eat breakfast?"

Ji Anning was taken aback for a moment as normally the old man would just grunt a response without looking up.

Without giving herself too much time to ponder this change, she smiled and shook her head, "No, I’ll just grab something to eat at school."

Upon hearing this, the elder did not speak but turned his gaze to the maid crouching on the side, preparing his tea, and instructed, "Sister Ling, go to the kitchen and get something for Anning to take with her."

"Alright," Sister Ling responded and stood up to head to the dining room.

Ji Anning, not wanting to make a fuss, smiled at the elder and expressed her gratitude, "Thank you, grandfather."

The elder then lowered his head again, engrossed in the newspaper, his presbyopia glasses on his nose, a few strands of his hair and eyebrows turning white.

Noticing some content, his brows suddenly furrowed.

Ji Anning’s eyes moved onto the newspaper in the elder’s hands. It was a piece of news about refugees from a certain country. She had just managed to read the headline when he sighed deeply and turned the page.

That sigh carried a mix of helplessness and pity.

Watching him, Ji Anning felt a moment of strangeness, then a sense of relief spread across her lips in a smile.

How could someone in his position always show his kind side? How would he maintain his dignity, or frighten his competitors?

She thought that was probably why she could never really bring herself to dislike the old man.

...

"Why is grandfather being so nice to Ji Anning now?"

Upstairs, Lin Yanqin and her daughters stood at the top of the stairs. They saw the elder calling Ji Anning back and even instructing a maid to prepare breakfast for her, filling them with envy.

Especially Ji Ruoqian, who had been punished by the elder several times because of Ji Anning.

"Huh, grandfather is hoping she’ll give him a great-grandson," said Ji Xiangting coldly, her gaze fierce and jealous as she stared at Ji Anning.

Ji Ruoqian frowned in frustration, "I can’t stand my grandfather sometimes. What kind of family are we? And he still believes in such superstitions, putting faith in a fortune-teller’s words."
